Afghanistan showed they won't be pushovers at next year's World Cup after ending their domestic visit to New Zealand with a two wins from four 50-over matches.

The tourists beat Northern Districts by 16 runs at Mt Maunganui on Thursday to square their mini-series 1-1. Two one-day games against Auckland last week produced the same outcome.

The team, mentored by former Black Caps coach Andy Moles, departed on a high note after reaching 264-7 and restricting Northern to 248-9.

Asghar Stanikzai raced to 63 from 47 balls to provide their highlight with the bat while seamer Dawlat Zadran returned the best bowling figures of 2-46 from 10 overs.

Offspinner Jono Boult's 3-24 was the standout bowling effort for an understrength Northern while opener Bharat Popli (58) and wicketkeeper Tim Seifert (51 not out) were the pick of the batsmen.

Afghanistan qualified for the World Cup starting in February through the World Cricket League Championship last year.
