New NATO chief visits Afghanistan

KABUL, Afghanistan, Nov. 6 (UPI) -- Jens Stoltenberg, NATO's new Secretary-General, arrived in Kabul, Afghanistan, Thursday in his first visit to the country as NATO chief.

The former prime minister of Norway visited a training center for Afghan troops, and will meet with the Afghan National Army Special Operations Command in Kabul.

Speaking at the training center, Stoltenberg reinforced NATO's commitment to training and advising local troops after NATO combat troops withdraw from Afghanistan by the end of 2014.

About 12,500 NATO troops, mostly from the United States, will remain in Afghanistan beyond the withdrawal deadline for training purposes.

Stoltenberg became NATO secretary-general in October.
