In August 2010 under then-Mayor Sharon Robinson-Briggs, Sharpton had attended a Town Meeting that was broadcast on WBLS and WLIB radio stations. His visit had, according to Plaintalker II, become "the focus of a City Council investigation over a $20,000 fee." Robinson-Briggs was reprimanded in a ruling in June 2012.

In 2013, Robinson-Briggs again invited Sharpton to an event held at a local nightclub as she was running for re-election in her bid for a third term. She lost to Mapp.
