Rev. Al Sharpton and Eric Garner's family begin countdown to special grand jury decision

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y.-- Rev Al. Sharpton and members of Eric Garner's family announced Saturday that they're starting a countdown to the special grand jury decision during a morning rally at National Action Network headquarters in Harlem.

"Countdown! Countdown!" Sharpton and the crowd cried during his speech.

The panel's ruling could come as early as next week, according to a law enforcement source.

"We're setting the clock today," the civil rights leader said. "There's going to be a countdown every day this week. What will the grand jury say about justice for Eric Garner?"

Garner's mother, Gwen Carr, and his widow, Esaw Garner, spoke briefly and shared the difficulty of spending their first Thanksgiving without their loved one.

Both women said they are anxiously awaiting the special grand jury decision, hoping and praying for a different outcome than in the Michael Brown case. A Ferguson, Mo. grand jury declined to indict officer Darren Wilson in connection with Brown's death back in August.

"We're looking for justice for my husband," Ms. Garner said. "We want them to see what's right and wrong. It's not a black and white issue. It's a right and wrong issue, and they were 100 percent wrong."

Ms. Carr added: "This is a difficult thing we're dealing with -- me and my family. I would like to hope in the coming weeks and days that the grand jury gives us a fair decision. We don't know what the outcome is, but we're praying. We know God has the last word."

Sharpton said that he's again asked for the federal government to get involved when the decision is announced. Sharpton and the Garner family have previously met twice with the federal government in the aftermath ofGarner's chokehold death in police custody on July 17 in Tompkinsville.

The reverend questioned why it is taking so long for the special grand jury to come to a decision when there's a video showing the incident, and where Garner can be heard saying, "I can't breathe. I can't breathe," several times.
