Sharpton skips Bridgeport visit, citing local politics

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (AP) The Rev. Al Sharpton has skipped a visit to Bridgeport to boost voter registration, citing local bickering.

The Rev. Kenneth Moales, a candidate for a vacant state Senate seat, said he asked Sharpton to cancel the visit scheduled for Wednesday night. He said he didnt want his campaign to be questioned.

In a video shown at a Bridgeport church, Sharpton cited the local election, set for Feb. 24. He said he hopes that after we get past the special election and local bickering that we can concentrate on a real effort to get people out in November.

Richard DeJesus, the endorsed Democrat, Charles Hare and Republican Quentin Dreher also are candidates for the Senate seat vacated by Andres Ayala, who resigned for the post of state motor vehicles commissioner.
