Tuskegee Airmen doc coming to The History Channel – AL.com

A documentary about the Tuskegee Airmen is coming to The History Channel. Tuskegee Airmen: Legacy of Courage will air on Wednesday, Feb. 10 at 7 p.m. central.

Executive produced and narrated by Good Morning America anchor and Alabama native Robin Roberts, the hour-long documentary will explore history the legacy and impact of Americas first Black military pilots and how their significant contributions to this country inspired the next generation of activists and leaders pushing for racial equality and civic change, according to a press release.

In addition to both archival and exclusive footage, the film will also feature personal anecdotes from Roberts, whose father was a Tuskegee Airman, as well as interviews with Airmen including fighter pilot Gen. Charles McGee, Lt. Colonel James Harvey and the late Franklin J. Macon, who died in November.

A slate of activists and politicians will also give commentary, including Tamika Mallory, Reverend Al Sharpton, and Andrew Young. Actors Elijah Kelley and Tristan Wilds of Red Tails, the 2012 feature film about the band of military pilots and airmen, will also be featured in the documentary.

The legacy of the Tuskegee Airmen is one that I hold extremely close to my heart, and I am thrilled to partner with The History Channel to tell their stories, said Roberts in the same press release. My father, Colonel Lawrence E. Roberts, was a Tuskegee Airman, and their service helped pave the way for the Civil Rights Movement and contributed to the end of segregation in the military.

On Feb. 1, in celebration of Black History Month, The History Channel will launch a special iteration of its Save Our History campaign by spotlighting everyday heroes whose contributions have shaped Black history. Save Our History is an ongoing public outreach project dedicated to preserving history and historic sites nationwide. Roberts will kick off the February campaign by sharing her personal stories about her father.
