KABUL, Afghanistan -- Two senior leaders of the al Qaeda-linked Haqqani network have been arrested in eastern Khost province, the Afghan intelligence service said Thursday, claiming a major blow to the Pakistan-based militant group.

Anis Haqqani, a brother of the network's leader, and Hafiz Rashid, who allegedly helped equip suicide bombers and select targets for attacks, were detained Tuesday in a special operation, the National Directorate of Security said in a statement.

"It is one of the biggest and most important arrests by NDS, and has strategic impact on this network and can cause disorder in its operations and weaken its fighting capabilities," the statement said, without providing details. The Associated Press could not immediately reach a Taliban spokesman for comment.

The statement said Anis Haqqani was an expert in computers and use of propaganda through social networks, and played a key role in the group's strategic decisions as a deputy to his brother, network leader Sirajuddin Haqqani.

"He (Anis) was responsible for collecting and preparing funds from Arabic countries to carry out operations of this network," the NDS statement said. Rashid was responsible for choosing targets and providing equipment to suicide bombers in Afghanistan, it said.

The Haqqanis are allied with al Qaeda and the Afghan Taliban and are accused of staging many cross-border attacks from their base in North Waziristan, Pakistan, including a 19-hour siege at the U.S. Embassy in Kabul in 2011.

Last November, Afghan intelligence and militant sources told CBS News that a suspected U.S. drone strike in northwest Pakistan killed senior Haqqani leader Maulawi Ahmad Jan. Also last November, Nasiruddin Haqaani, the deputy leader of the terror network, was gunned down in what appeared to be an attack by rival Muslim militants.

Afghanistan Nabs Key Haqqani Network Commanders

KABUL - Afghan forces arrested the son of the feared Haqqani network's founder along with a militant commander in charge of suicide attacks, Afghanistan's intelligence service said Thursday. The Haqqani network, the Taliban-linked Islamist group which mainly operates out of Pakistan's border areas, has been blamed for some of the deadliest and most sophisticated attacks on NATO and Afghan troops in Afghanistan, including assaults on hotels popular with foreigners in Kabul and a 2011 attack on the U.S. embassy.

The National Directorate for Security did not go into details of the arrests, which it said occurred on Tuesday. It said Anas Haqqani was in charge of raising funds and recruitment through social media. Anas Haqqani is the son of Jalaluddin Haqqani, the former anti-Soviet guerrilla commander who founded the network, which also has ties to al Qaeda. Anas Haqqani was also a special adviser to his brother, Sarajuddin Haqqani, the network's leader, the NDS said. The NDS said that the Haqqani network commander for southeastern Afghanistan, Hafiz Rashid, also was arrested Tuesday. It said Rashid was in charge of selecting targets and providing equipment for suicide bombers in Kabul and the eastern province of Khost.

Afghan security forces said Thursday they have captured two senior leaders of the feared Haqqani network, a hardline group behind sophisticated attacks on Afghan and NATO forces.

Anas Haqqani, the son of the network's founder Jalaluddin Haqqani, was arrested late Tuesday along with Hafiz Rashid, another commander, by the National Directorate of Security (NDS), the Afghan intelligence agency, officials said.

"We hope that these two arrests will have direct consequences on the network and their centre of command," NDS spokesman Haseeb Sediqi told AFP.

Anas played an important role in the network's "strategic decision-making" and frequently travelled to Gulf states to get funding, Sediqi said.

A statement from the NDS described Anas as having special computing skills and said he was "one of the masterminds of this network in making propaganda through social networks."

The Haqqanis have been blamed for attacks on Afghan government and NATO targets across Afghanistan as well as for kidnappings and murders.

The Haqqani network was founded by Jalaluddin Haqqani an Afghan guerrilla leader bankrolled by the United States to fight Soviet troops in Afghanistan in the 1980s. Now in his 70s and frail, he is believed to live with his family in Pakistan.

In the 1980s Jalaluddin was close to the CIA and Pakistani intelligence. He allied himself to the Taliban after they took power in Kabul in 1996, serving as a cabinet minister under the militia's supreme leader, Mullah Mohammad Omar.

When American troops arrived after the 9/11 attacks, Haqqani sought refuge in Pakistan's tribal district of North Waziristan and became one of the first anti-US commanders based in the border areas.
