As part of Black History Month, activist Al Sharpton spoke in Memphis Sunday, delivering a talk that was equal parts sermon, civil-rights history and screed against Donald Trump.

Sharpton spoke for about 45 minutes late Sunday morning to a packed sanctuary atMississippi Boulevard Christian Church, following a sermon at the church's Southeast Memphis campus earlier that morning. The church's senior pastor, Lawrence Turner, is on the board of directors of Sharpton's National Action Network.

It didn't take Sharpton long to attack"Hurricane Trump," as he labeled him early on.

"A lot of you who thought everything was cool, Hurricane Trump has come," Sharpton said. "The fact of the matter is, we've seen people like Trump before. We've seen this before."

Sharpton told the crowd that Trump reached out to him after the election, but Sharptonsaid he refused a meeting: "I'm not interested in a red carpet photo op for him."

A lot of you who thought everything was cool, Hurricane Trump has come. The fact of the matter is, we've seen people like Trump before. We've seen this before.

Sharptoncompared Trump to former President Richard Nixon, who was elected in 1968 but resigned in 1974 after the Watergate scandal erupted.

"It was a dark day, but we got through Richard Nixon," he said beforecomparingTrump toNixon's successors as Republican presidents: Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush. "We got through all of that."

Sharpton also spent part of his talk discussing Memphis's legacy in the civil-rights movement, particularly the 1968 assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at the former Lorraine Motel Downtown.

"When I think of Memphis, I don't think of Graceland.I think of the (National) Civil Rights Museum and the Lorraine Motel," Sharpton said, recounting a conversation he said he had with a man on the plane to Memphis Saturday.

Sharpton said that he was a teenagerwhen King was killed, and he didn't quite understand why his mother was so upset.

"You're weeping like it was a member of our family," Sharpton said he told his mother. "She said, You'd have to have been born and raised in the South. Made to sit in the back of the bus but paid the same fare to understand who Dr. King was. You'd have had to have been thirsty and told you couldn't drink from the water fountain. Hungry and told you couldn't eat at the restaurant.' She said, 'You don't know what we've been through. We fought so your generation wouldn't have to go through this.'"

Sharpton then indicated his beliefthat the struggles of the past will make those of the future easier to handle.

"Y'all seem to be easily rattled," he said, "'cause some of you forget where we come from and how we got here."

Several members of MSG security removed Oakley from the arena last Wednesday night. Though he claims he did nothing to warrant removal, the Knicks maintain that Oakley portrayed belligerent and abusive behavior from the moment he came into the Garden.

Though, Sharptons mobilization of picketers in solidarity, may no longer prove necessary, since an intervention spearheaded by NBA legend Michael Jordan and NBA Commissioner Adam Silver appears to have made real progress in brokering a truce between Dolan and Oakley.

However, in a day and age when newspapers publish Monday morning updates featuring the number of people shot in Chicago over the weekend, with the vast majority of those victims being black, the Rev might want to redirect his focus elsewhere.

Partial transcript as follows:

SHARPTON: Looks like there is real trouble in the White House. This whole question around the forced resignation and I emphasize the forced resignation, of the National Security Adviser Flynn, General Flynn, seems to really be something that could be a serious threat to the presidency of Donald Trump. From the beginning, there have been those that have observed his softness at best with Vladimir Putin, his connection to Russia. But lets not forget Central to this is the intelligence report that they tried to interfere and have direct influence on an America election. Our concern should be that any time a foreign government particularly a combative one can influence our election and have direct contact and some talks of negotiation with one in that administration, we need to be clear that is a real threat and that we ought to dig deep until we hit dirt here and find out what is going on. So that the American people wont be trumped.

JOYNER: Wont be trumped. Good one rev. So you think well have enough to impeach? Should I get excited yet?

SHARPTON: You should begin. Dont get excited yet just begin. Because the beginning of this is that if there was dialogue and negotiations with the Russians which is clearly against the law and clearly an act that can not be pardoned. If the president knew while it was going on and did not stop it or in some way authorized it that can be impeachable. So its going to come down to what he knew and when did he know it. Cause it is clear that it was done by Flynn and possibly others. What many of us are wondering is how could they do this without the knowledge of the president if not the tacit support. That is where you can get into where you can start getting excited and start doing high fives with Bill Bellamy.

Mediaite reported that Sharpton's group announced plans on Monday.

Civil rights leader Rev. Al Sharpton is calling on New York Knicks Owner James Dolan to immediately lift the ban against Charles Oakley, after conversing with Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams and agreeing that the policy has not been reinforced with other players. Rev. Sharpton is calling upon Mr. Dolan to lift the ban and reinstate Mr. Oakleys privileges. In the event that the ban is not lifted, NANs Northeast Regional Director Kirsten John Foy is mobilizing people to picket Madison Square Garden in solidarity.

The New York Knicks legend was banned from the arena after an altercation. The Knicks owner claims that Oakley was engaging in abusive behavior from the moment he entered MSGon Wednesday.

Oakley was sitting a few rows behind Dolan when he got into an altercation with security and was ejected from the Garden.

NBC analyst Charles Barkley said that he wishes the drama would go away after dominating the basketball world for six days.

"This is probably the silliest, most b.s. thing Ive ever seen in my 30 years in the NBA," Barkley said. "This was a waste of time, waste of energy. Its a bad look for the Knicks. Its a bad look for Charles Oakley. Its a bad look for the NBA. And I cannot believe were wasting all our time on this crap."

The New York Post reports that Oakley's ban has been lifted and only lasted four days. Both Dolan and Oakley met with NBA commissioner Adam Silver on Monday.

The apparent feud between New York Knicks owner James Dolan and former Knicks player Charles Oakley continues to draw in new personalities.

Per Stefan Bondy of the New York Daily News, Reverend Al Sharpton plans to protest outside Madison Square Garden unless the ban is lifted.

Later on Monday,NBA commissioner Adam Silver and Hall of Famer Michael Jordanhelped negotiate a reconciliation between Oakley and Dolan, announced the league. The statement read:

Both Mr. Oakley and Mr. Dolan were apologetic about the incident and subsequent comments, and their negative impact on the Knicks organization and the NBA. Mr. Dolan expressed his hope that MR. Oakley would return to MSG as his guest in the near future. I appreciate the efforts of Mr. Dolan, Mr. Oakley and Mr. Jordan to work towards a resolution of this matter.

Dolan had announced Friday that Oakley would not be allowed to enter Madison Square Garden, even with a ticket, following the former player's forcible removal from the arena earlier in the week.

Speaking on The Michael Kay Show (via ESPN.com), Dolan speculated on possible issues with Oakley, saying: "He may have a problem with alcohol. We don't know."

Many have since come to the player's defense, including Dwyane Wade on his personal Instagram account. Noted Knicks fan Spike Lee also supported Oakley by wearing his jersey for the next game.

Oakley was charged with three counts of assault at Madison Square Garden after the Knicks say he "behaved in a highly inappropriate and completely abusive manner," per Steve Popper of USA Today.
