Al Sharpton: Trump needs to have a talk with Abe Lincoln – Washington Examiner (blog)

Hours after President-elect Trump offered a salute to the statue of Abe Lincoln at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., to start his inauguration welcome ceremony, civil rights leader Rev. Al Sharpton urged the president-elect to have a conversation with the 16th president to get a better grip on what is wrong and right.

Speaking to thousands of anti-Trump protesters gathered in New York City on Thursday, Sharpton assailed Trump for getting upset at Rep. John Lewis, a civil rights icon, for questioning the legitimacy of Trump's Election Day victory after U.S. intelligence concluded Russian hackers meddled in the election process.

He said that after Trump spent years attempting to smear President Obama as "not a legitimate president," now Trump is having a "temper tantrum" about an election allegedly tainted by foreign influence.

"Your politics started by trying to 'delegitimize' the sitting president's nationality," Sharpton said.

Calling attention to Trump's appearance before the Lincoln Memorial, Sharpton said to Trump: "You need to talk to President Lincoln."

He said Lincoln would explain to Trump that slavery and oppression is wrong and that "states' rights whether it's on healthcare, on teachers on education is wrong."

"We're not going backwards," Sharpton declared, before raising up a smartphone and daring Russian hackers to target it.

Other speakers at the rally Thursday evening included liberal filmmaker Michael Moore, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio and actors Robert de Niro and Alec Baldwin, who has made several unflattering turns impersonating the president-elect on "Saturday Night Live."

Many of the speakers encouraged attendees and Americans across the nation to take part in "100 days of resistance," a movement started by Moore to push back against Trump's policies.

Although it wasn't an eloquent speech, it was simple and focused on the message that won him the White House.

"As bad as we think it's going to be, it's going to be worse," Moore said, before reassuring the crowd that the Trump opposition is the majority that can keep him in check.

"He will not last the four years," Moore also said.

Al Sharpton: The process that elected Trump was ‘not legitimate’ – Yahoo News

The Rev. Al Sharpton says he agrees with Rep. John Lewis view that the election of Donald Trump was not legitimate.

Theres no question that the process that elected him was not legitimate, Sharpton said in an appearance on MSNBC Monday night.

The activist and talk-show host said evidence collected by U.S. intelligence agencies showing the Russian governments interference during the campaign clearly raises serious questions about Trumps victory.

Late last week, Lewis told NBCs Chuck Todd that he is planning to boycott Trumps inauguration because the Kremlins apparent intrusion in the U.S. election delegitimizes Trumps victory.

I dont see this president-elect as a legitimate president, Lewis said.

In response, Trump fired off a series of tweets saying Lewis a civil rights icon who was beaten while marching in Selma, Ala., in 1965 was all talk and should spend more time on fixing and helping his district, which is in horrible shape and falling apart (not to mention crime infested).

Sharpton said Trumps tweets showed disrespect by attacking a living icon.

To come from John Lewis, a man who was beaten on the bridge in Selma, Ala., to get the Voting Rights Act, that opened up the voting rights process to everyone he has some blood in this, Sharpton said. You should not take lightly his view at all.

He claimed he was going to give a new deal to black Americans, Sharpton said of Trump. Is this the new deal? When you disparage one of our living icons? Is this the new deal, when you disparage a congressional district? I think that the president-elect needs to take a long, hard look at the fact that hes a few days of being inaugurated and hes got to fulfill the commitment that he will be a bigger person.

Rev. Al Sharpton gotan earful from activistswhen he arrived in Baltimoreto preach on Sunday.

A group of men peppered the preacher with questions about his activism in the black community ina Facebook Live video posted by Duane G. Davis.

They come to exploit tragedies and collect money, Davis saidabout Sharpton and other high-profile liberal activists. How much money is he going to get to speak here?

One activist repeatedly asked Sharpton what he wasdoingto help young black men, telling Sharptonthat his past activism wasntgood enough.

You are talking about 19I am talking about today, the man said.

Whenasked about Freddie Gray, the 25-year-old black man killed by the police in 2015, Sharpton said, What did I do with Freddie Gray? What are you talking about? I didnt deal with that, yall did.

Exactly, thats the problem, Al, the man retorted.

That is your problem, Sharpton said, angeringthe activists.

Davis pressedSharpton to disclose how much he wasbeing paid to preach in Baltimore. Sharpton denied receiving any money for the sermon.

Davis is no stranger to controversy. He was jailed in 2011 for a protest stunt involving a toilet, which police thought was a possible bomb. In the 2012 Republican primary, he ran as a protest candidate for lieutenant governor of Maryland, according to RedState.

Al Sharpton: ‘No Question’ That the Process That Elected Trump … – Mediaite

Reverend Al Sharpton said on MSNBC tonight, Theres no question that the process that elected [Donald Trump] was not legitimate.

He told MTP Daily guest anchor Peter Alexander that clearly the process has serious questions about it, and given who John Lewis is and what role he holds in American history, people should not take lightly his view at all.

Alexander pointed out that Democrats were up in arms when it was believed Trump wouldnt accept the election as legitimate. Sharpton argued that plenty of evidence has come out now to raise legitimate questions.

He also scolded Trump for his disrespect towards Lewis and said that as president he must be the bigger person and prove hes interested in uniting the country.
