Fact Checker: Giulianis claim the White House invited Al Sharpton up to 85 times

I think you missed one very important point. He has had Al Sharpton to the White House 80, 85 times. You make Al Sharpton a close adviser, you are going to turn the police in America against you.

Former New York City mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani, CBS News Face the Nation, Dec. 28, 2014

In his interview on Face the Nation, Giuliani addressed The Fact Checkers Four Pinocchio ratingabout his comment that President Obama launched a propaganda campaign that everybody should hate the police. That rhetoric, Giuliani had said, led to the assassination-style killings of two New York Police Department officers in December.

Giuliani had not responded to our requests for comment for the fact check, but was later asked about it by Major Garrett during the interview. He said the fact check missed the one big point: Al Sharpton. He offered a new explanation with a figure attached: Obamas anti-police rhetoric is through his association with the Rev. Al Sharpton, who has been invited to the White House 80 to 85 times.

You know, actions speak louder than words. You put Al Sharpton next to you, you just told everyone, Im against the police, Giuliani said in the segment.

Giulianis figure that Obama has had Sharpton to the White House 80, 85 times seemed high. That claim also has beenmade in right-leaning news outlets, including one that labeled Sharpton Obamas race czar. (While the Ebola czar is hardly seen, Obamas race czar is everywhere. He reportedly has visited the White House more than 80 times more than most of the presidents cabinet.)

Is it correctObama invited Sharpton to the White House upwards of 85 times? And does that make Sharpton a close advisor of the president?

The Giuliani-Sharpton relationship

Giuliani responded to our request for interview this time. He explained that it sends an anti-police message when Sharpton, an outspoken activist who has protested homicides of minorities by police since the 1990s, is in public with leaders such asObama or New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio. There are a handful of reasons hundreds of NYPD officers are literally turning their back against de Blasio,he said, and one of the reasons is that de Blasio met with Sharpton after Eric Garner died after he was put in a chokehold by an NYPD officer in Staten Island.

For readers who are not familiar, there is history between Sharpton and Giuliani that dates to Giulianis first term as mayor of New York City, which started 21 years ago.

Walmart Allegedly Ignores Requests To Stop Funding Al Sharpton's 'Anti-Police' Organization

Wal-Mart has donated money to Al Sharptons organization, the National Action Network, for years. But now a government watchdog group has made repeated requests to the retailer to stop funding NAN.

The National Legal and Policy Center (NLPC) has asked the nations largest retailer to stop giving corporate funds to Sharptons organization in light of the New York police officers murders.

In a letter to C. Douglas McMillon, Walmart President and CEO, NLPCs Peter Flaherty stated:

We ask that Walmart end its financial support of Al Sharpton and his organization, the National Action Network (NAN).

The cold-blooded murder of two New York City police officers, Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu, follows weeks of Sharptons vilification of law enforcement personnel.

As you know, Walmart has helped bankroll Sharpton for years. Most recently, the company was a sponsor of Sharptons 60th birthday party in New York City, which reportedly was a fundraiser for NAN that raised a million dollars.

We have repeatedly raised the issue of your support for Sharpton, including at the Walmart annual meeting. You cannot lay any claim to corporate social responsibility as long as you write checks to Sharpton.

This is not the first time that violence and loss of life have followed Sharptons agitation, such as in the 1991 Crown Heights riots and the 1995 Freddys Fashion Mart incident. Sharptons involvement in these and other abhorrent episodes, such as the Tawana Brawley hoax, are a matter of record. You cannot claim that you are unaware of Sharptons past record of anti-Semitism and incitement.

Other corporations support NAN, and we will be making the same request of them, but Walmart is the biggest and most prominent corporation funding Sharpton. It is essential that Walmart lead the way in disassociating corporate America from Sharptons demagoguery.

Police officers are working people whose dedication and professionalism help keep us all safe. They are also Walmart customers and shareholders. You can demonstrate your support for law enforcement by ending your support for Sharpton without delay.
