Al Sharpton to blame for police shootings, actor James Woods tweets

NEW YORK, Dec. 23 (UPI) -- Actor James Woods offered strong words for civil rights activist and television pundit Al Sharpton on Twitter, accusing the Baptist minister of inspiring the murder of two New York police officers by leading protests against police violence.

After a three month absence from Twitter, Woods returned to the social media platform to blast Sharpton, New York Mayor Bill de Blasio and the Obama administration.

In a tweet, Woods asserted Sharpton was "directly responsible" for the deaths of officer Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu, who were fatally shot while sitting in their patrol car on Saturday.

Woods has since continued to criticizing Sharpton, whom Woods accuses of being a "race-hustler."

Despite Woods' strong words for Sharpton, the Once Upon a Time in America star also tweeted support for Emerald Garner, daughter of Eric, after she called for solidarity between those who demonstrate against police violence and the police whose culture demonstrators seek to change.

Woods' "long time" friend and political opposite Alec Baldwin took to Twitter to address Woods' rant, but Woods said he chose ignore Baldwin's comments for the sake of their friendship.

Correction: An earlier version of this story said Woods had deleted the tweet where he says Sharpton is "directly responsible" for the murder of the policemen. Woods did not delete the tweet.

Its always about Al

Anyone surprised Al Sharptons immediate reaction to the execution of two cops was how this will affect Al Sharpton?

As news broke of the shooting of Officers Wenjian Liu and Rafael Ramos, Sharpton issued a condemnation. But he also worried it might derail the pursuit of justice in the Eric Garner and Michael Brown cases. And he played a phone recording of death threats against him filled with racial slurs.

The Rev effectively draws a moral parallel between the deaths of Garner and Brown both of whom died, regretfully, while resisting arrest and Officers Liu and Ramos, who were shot point blank while defending New Yorkers from criminals.

Throughout Sharptons career, from the Freddys Fashion Mart killings to the ambush of these officers, his causes have been attended by violence. Often he condemns such acts. But Sharpton remains stuck in a narrative where New York is 1960s Alabama and our cops are all Bull Connors.

Yet Mayor de Blasio has treated him as though he were the second coming of Martin Luther King, Jr. President Obama has him down to the White House where he is treated as a civil-rights leader.

And when a Sony exec makes some racially insensitive remarks in an e-mail, its the Rev. Al she ends up apologizing to.

For all the talk about innocent men getting shot, the two men who never even had the chance to put their hands up were Officers Liu and Ramos.

From Mayor de Blasio on down, city leaders say the murders horrify them, and some, like the mayor, have even asked for a break in the protests.

Well learn whether they mean any of it by whether they call Al Sharpton out or continue to indulge his pretense that hes a healer rather than an inciter.

Rev. Al Sharpton Says He And Bill De Blasio Haven't Spoken Since Saturday's Shooting

Rev. Al Sharpton told the NY Daily News that he has not spoken to Mayor Bill de Blasio since the brutal murder of two NYPD officers on Saturday.

Sharpton said de Blasio texted me and said we would talk, but we have not talked. When Sharpton was also asked if he belived de Blasio was purposely keeping a distance from him because of criticism from the police union, he responded, You can draw whatever conclusions you want.

De Blasios lack of communication towards Sharpton, in the Reverends opinion, is not exclusive to him. Sharpton believes the mayor doesnt want to look like hes talking to any protesters.

I dont think its just me.

The distance de Blasio has created between himself and others who led or supported protests objecting to the grand jury decision in the Eric Garner case is becoming increasingly evident. On Monday, de Blasio held a press conference at the Police Athletic League and called on protesters to refrain from demonstrations until after the funerals of slain officers Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu.

It's important that regardless of people's viewpoints that everyone step back, de Blasio said. Its a time for everyone to put aside political debates, put aside protests, put aside all of the things that we will talk about in due time.

De Blasio also visited the families of Ramos and Liu, who were ambushed and murdered by 28-year-old Ismaaiyl Brinsley. Brinsley had revealed via Instagram his plan to kill NYPD officers as revenge for Garners death.

Sharpton said that instead of creating distance, de Blasio should be bringing both sides together and working towards reform. He should take the political risk of bringing everyone together.
