Embattled Sony chief Amy Pascal is due to meet with the Rev. Al Sharpton in person in New York just days before Sonys remake of Annie, starring Jamie Foxx and Quvenzhan Wallis, is to be released in theaters.
Pascal made a call to Sharpton late last week after racist e-mails between herself and producer Scott Rudin about President Obama and what movies he might like were revealed as part of sensitive information released by hackers.
Sharpton said to Page Six exclusively:
I told her how offended I was, I felt it was outrageous. She said it didnt reflect her [true feelings]. I told her when you look at the lack of diversity in Hollywood, and her own company and the context and language [of the e-mails], how could I not feel offended?
Sharpton said Pascal was due to be in New York next week and asked me to meet. I agreed. Sharpton also said he would ask prominent African-American academic Dr. Cornel West and Marc Morial, president of the National Urban League, to join the meeting. He added no mention was made of Rudin in the call.
Sharpton continued that he didnt agree to anything more than a meeting with Pascal during their conversation.
I dont agree her apology is sufficient, nor did I agree that we wont join those [calling] for her removal. Everything is on the table. Im not going to promise anything either way.
Pascal on Thursday told the Hollywood Reporter the call to Sharpton was about starting the healing process, and said, I want to accept responsibility for these stupid, callous remarks.
Others believe Pascal is trying to save her job and stem further fallout, whether it be black talent refusing to work with Sony or boycotts of Sony movies, including Annie.
A Hollywood source said, The bottom line is that Sony is a publicly traded company, and if their shareholders and box office is hurt from the fallout of this hacking scandal, that will seal her fate. It is interesting that Sony ordered its name be removed from The Interview, and you may well see they will do the same with Annie.
