Rev. Al Sharpton in Eatonville preaching virtues of voting

EATONVILLE, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) - Reverend Al Sharpton told a group of civic and religious leaders in Eatonville that turning out the vote will be critical. Sharpton lashed out at young voters for not showing up, less than a half-century after civil rights leaders in the sixties fought so hard, and sometimes died for their beliefs.

"In Florida, working a job that your grandma couldn't work at, living in neighborhoods they couldn't live, check into any hotel you want, eat at any restaurant you want, got a little job with a title, and too lazy and ungrateful to get up and use what somebody died to give you."

In his 30 minute speech to the group, Sharpton did not make an endorsement in the governor's race. When asked about it afterwards, he again did not mention Charlie Crist by name.

"We've got to come out in numbers and support and vote for who is most in our interest."

He did say that Central Florida is still full of racial problems, especially when it comes to efforts to suppress black voters.

"In the sixties, we fought Jim Crow. You'd have to say now we are fighting his son, James Crow Jr. ESQ."

Sharpton says the wounds from the death of Trayvon Martin also have not healed yet, and he believes the trouble still exits in the African-American community.

"I think the turmoil is still there. I think it is under the surface -- there's a difference between quiet and peace. You may have more quiet now, but you don't have peace. Peace is based on having equality and fairness, and we still. Any incident can bring back the same kind of turmoil unless we solve the problem."

Sharpton urged the people in the room to not only vote, but make sure they are leading by example and organizing voters to get to the polls.

Rev. Al Sharpton urges Eatonville congregation to vote in upcoming election

By Bakari Savage, Reporter Last Updated: Tuesday, October 07, 2014, 11:39 PM EATONVILLE --

Rev. Al Sharpton spoke to the congregation at the Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church in Eatonville, invoking Trayvon Martin and Jordan Davis as he urged members to vote in the upcoming election.

How do we answer Stand Your Ground in Florida? How do we answer our outrage over Trayvon Martin? How do we answer the things that we consider abusive and disrespectful and offensive? We go to the polls!" Sharpton said Tuesday. "They should not say, in the light of all that weve seen in Florida, that we were missing in action when we had an opportunity to do something about it.

Hedder Pierre sat in the audience as the Reverend Al Sharpton used this opportunity to ignite African Americans.

The most electrifying part was when he mentioned that you can go to the ballot box and exercise your power, said Pierre.

The question is, whether we are going to be so lethargic that we wont step up and use the 10 days [early voting], when our grandparents were just praying to get one day? Sharpton said.

Sharpton said his National Action Network is starting a statewide drive to give whatever energy they can to getting the vote out in Florida during early voting.

Weve had numbers of voters now registered that weve never had before," Sharpton said. "So, I think one of the things that Im learning that people understandyoure not back in the day no more."

Why Rachel must go: The bleeding wont stop soon

There were three triple shootings in New York City last week, the last at 4 a.m. Sunday in The Bronx, and not one made the top of the news anywhere.

As opposed to the splash Al Sharptons lawyer, Sanford Rubenstein, made when he was accused of raping a ranking executive in Al Sharptons civil rights organization.

This, right after a former top Sharpton aide, Rachel Noerdlinger, severely embarrassed the de Blasio administration by getting caught lying on a key city employment form.

See the common thread here? Al Sharpton, Mayor de Blasios police-commissioner-without-portfolio, had a bad week. Thus, by extension, so did Hizzoner.

So, how long before de Blasio comes to understand that hanging with Rev. Al generates unhappy outcomes?

Like the still reverberating laffaire Noerdlinger?

Itll likely be a while yet. Ten months into his incumbency, the mayor still seems impervious to embarrassment. He doesnt get that when mayors speak, people listen. That words matter. That a statement made today might have to be defended tomorrow.

Take Noerdlinger, now chief of staff to First Spouse Chirlane McCray. Having been Sharptons principal aide and chief trouble-shooter, she seemed purpose-built for de Blasio and McCray.

Theyve established a two-track mayoralty: He as ex-officio, she as co-regent vested with power, perks and a staff that requires a $170,000-a-year chief.

By conventional standards, Noerdlinger seems an odd choice for a sensitive job. She comes with a huge downside among other things, a cohabitating boyfriend with a criminal record that includes manslaughter, drug-trafficking and (just last year) attempted vehicular assault on a New Jersey cop.
