Sharpton: There is concern about Crawford case
UPDATE @ 9:10 p.m.: In remarks that lasted about 30 minutes, the Rev. Al Sharpton received a standing ovation. In his remarks, he also focused comments about the black community and the importance of voting rights.
An aunt of John Crawford, who has been the family spokeswoman since the fatal shooting in the Beavercreek Walmart, said the family, which was in attendance, had no comment.
UPDATE @ 8:45 p.m.: The Rev. Al Sharpton told the crowd that people across the country are very concerned about the [John] Crawford case, and he called on the Ohio Attorney General to release the video tape of the Walmart shooting.
"I come to Central State tonight to say to the attorney general let's go to the tape! ....If you won't go to the tape, and you have the tape, we can only assume what we want."
Sharpton said in recent weeks there have been multiple cases of police killing and beating people, and he finds it hard to believe that police were guilty of wrongdoing in every case.
Sharpton took the stage at 8:30 p.m.
UPDATE @ 7 p.m.: A crowd estimated at 150 to 200 people are awaiting the arrival of the Rev. Al Sharpton, who is said to be running late.
He is expected to arrive on campus at about 8 p.m.
FIRST REPORT: The Rev. Al Sharpton is scheduled to speak tonight at Central State University.
The open community forum starts at 7 p.m. in the auditorium of the Paul Robeson Cultural & Performing Arts Center, the historically black university announced.
