How Ann Coulter cashed in on ‘dark day for free speech’ – East Bay Times

In a perfect world, Ann Coulter would have given a speech Thursday, at UC Berkeley, as originally scheduled. She would have spoken on immigration and no doubt aroused passionate reaction ranging from rabid applause to sputtering apoplexy.

Its her schtick, peddling provocation from about as far right as you get. And she is very good at what she does.

She was invited to appear at UC Berkeley on Thursday, and in a perfect world the speech would have gone off without a hitch. But before Thursday could get here, the city of Berkeley was rocked by three politically themed violent demonstrations in three months. UC Berkeley Chancellor Nicholas Dirks, prudently fearing the worst, asked Coulter to reschedule for May 2.

It is a dark day for free speech in America, she said in a tweet.

By the letter of the Bill of Rights, she is correct. The First Amendment is a bedrock principle of our country. And Coulter was denied her right to speak at the time and venue of her choosing.

Heres the irony:

Denied her right to free speech, she has spent the better part of a week on a filibustering First Amendment-fest. Seriously, she hasnt shut up. She has been omnipresent, making dozens of posts on her Twitter and Facebook accounts and making the media rounds. For all we know, she churned out another of her New York Times best-sellers between tweets. No one could possibly wonder what she is thinking.

And she is thinking.

She not only kept the narrative of this nonevent alive, she drove it with skill and dexterity, keeping her fans, detractors and the press sprinting from one shiny object to the next.

She bashed UC Berkeley:

She exhibiteddefiance:

She even found time for a little self-promotion:

She hinted that she would show up for the originally scheduled event, insisting it was up to police to keep me safe. Then backed off and confirmed it was canceled. Then said she might show up Thursday to stroll around the graveyard of the First Amendment.

In short, she occasioned a brilliant bit of branding, delivering her message in spades and reaping a priceless windfall of free publicity along the way certainly more attention than she would have generated from a speech.

She is such an astute messenger that it was hardly a surprise early Thursday afternoon when, despite the cancellation, groups of all stripes and agendas began trickling into Berkeley. As of 3 p.m., the most prominent feature of the gathering was a bubble-blowing machine. Perhaps fittingly, the nonevent generated a nonviolent assembly.

As if to underscore that point, a Twitter post included a photo of a plane towing a banner above the gathering. The banner read,Dont take the bait, rise above the hate!!

A nice thought. But theres no money in that.

Sean Hannity: Ann Coulter just the latest target of fascist media – Fox News

We are at a huge turning point when it comes to freedom of speech in the United States of America, and it is time to take a stand against liberal fascists out to silence conservative voices.

Violent, radical snowflake liberals at University of California Berkeley have succeeded, at least for now, in shutting down another conservative speaker. Ann Coulter was supposed to give a speech on that campus tonight, but the threat of violence has scuttled those plans. Berkeley, which in the 1960s, fashioned itself as the home of free speech, is now the home of fascistic intellectual intolerance.

The idea that the alt-left is tolerant and inclusive is a big myth and lie. In fact, the First Amendment means nothing to these people. It's just a yellowed parchment they care nothing about. Their goal is simple: Shut down every conservative voice in America, by any means necessary.

Ann Coulter is only the latest target this week. Liberal fascists are carrying out a well-funded and carefully orchestrated smear campaign to try and take down President Trump and anybody and everybody that supports him and his policies. I've also become a target, as the alt-left media repeats lies about me even though the original liar has since recanted. Why fact check when it might get in the way of ruining my career? They want to destroy me and get me off the air, once and for all.

Its not just about me, but by fighting back, I am hoping to use my case to expose what's really happening. In case you dont know, heres what happened. Six days ago, just two days after Bill O'Reilly parted ways with the Fox News Channel, an individual with serious and glaring credibility issues fabricated completely untrue, ridiculous claims about me that go back more than a decade.

The alt-left press could easily have checked this person out and learned it wasnt the first groundless attack against me. But that could have gotten in the way of their agenda. They ran with it.

"Sean Hannity denies right-wing blogger's sex harassment claim," was NBC News headline. "Is Hannity next to fall? Fox guest says the anchor tried to pressure her into hotel room sex," was the headline on a website called Raw Story, and by the way, the individual didnt even say that in the first place.

So far, none of these outlets have updated their headlines to correct the story and tell their viewers or their readers that this highly questionable individual has since recanted these completely false claims.

I have hired a killer team of lawyers and investigators, and we are laying out a war strategy that's going to hold accountable every media outlet that smears me with lies. Im told that these media outlets have a basic, fundamental obligation to do rudimentary fact-checking instead of just taking the word of one individual. In my case, they went for the cheap headline without even doing a simple Google search which would have undermined the entire story.

I may end up suing some of these outlets because I have had enough. These attempts to destroy and silence conservative voices need to stop or Fox News Channel, as the only news network that gives President Trump a fair shake, goes away. Your favorite talk show hosts go away. Talk radio goes away.

Im fighting back. And I hope by doing so, I show others that we dont have to rollover for the liberal fascists and dishonest media that are out to silence free speech in America.

UC Berkeley Republicans sue school over Ann Coulter talk – CNN

The lawsuit filed by Berkeley College Republicans and Young America's Foundation accuses the school of discriminating against conservative guest speakers by placing onerous time and location restrictions on their appearances.

The lawsuit seeks to end what it calls an "unconstitutionally vague policy" that the school "selectively" applies to stifle conservative viewpoints.

In response to the lawsuit the school said it welcomes speakers of all political viewpoints, including Coulter.

"UC Berkeley has been working to accommodate a mutually agreeable time for Ms. Coulter's visit -- which has not yet been scheduled -- and remains committed to doing so. The campus seeks to ensure that all members of the Berkeley and larger community -- including Ms. Coulter herself -- remain safe during such an event."

The lawsuit accuses the school of adopting an unwritten "high-profile speaker policy" with the help of the mayor's office and Berkeley Police after the ill-fated Yiannopoulos event. The policy restricts speaking events to before 3 p.m. and says they must be held in a "securable" location, though it's not clear what that means, the lawsuit alleges.

The lawsuit says the stipulations led BCR to cancel an event featuring conservative writer David Horowitz after the school said it would have to pay $5,788 for a security fee.

Coulter said she faced similar time and location conditions for her appearance. Organizers said Coulter's speech was intended as a "counterpoint" to a talk by Maria Echaveste, an adviser to US President Bill Clinton.

Coulter said she accepted the terms, only to have the school "cancel" the event.

The school said its track record shows a commitment to hosting conservative speakers sponsored by BCR, including Ben Shapiro

"... The organization's efforts have led many notable conservatives to share their viewpoints with students and the public on campus," a statement said.

The lawsuit demands make no specific reference to Coulter's event. In addition to unspecified punitive and compensatory damages, it asks for an injunction preventing the school from applying "any unwritten or unpublished policy restricting the exercise of political expression on the UC Berkeley campus."

The lawsuit also asks the court to prevent the school from "selectively enforcing the High-Profile Speaker Policy" against BCR or "unilaterally canceling" speaking events hosted by the group in compliance with written, published university policies."

In a letter to the school threatening legal action last week, organizers said they followed protocol, acceding to the school's "discriminatory" conditions, only to have the event rescheduled to a time when most students would be studying for exams.

In response, Berkeley's counsel faulted organizers for failing to notify the school or seek a security review before signing its contract with Coulter.

CNN's Stephanie Becker and Sonya Hamasaki contributed to this report.
