Right-wing star Ann Coulter to speak at UC Berkeley – East Bay Times

BERKELEY Conservative commentator Ann Coulter, author of In Trump We Trust and other political-themed books, has accepted an invitation to speak at UC Berkeley on April 27, according to the sponsor of the event.

The time and location have not been finalized, said Troy Worden, spokesman for the Berkeley College Republicans. Once those details are finalized, the event will be posted on Eventbrite, he said. Coulter will speak on the topic of illegal immigration, he added.

University spokesman Dan Mogulof said student groups have the right to invite speakers of their choosing to campus.

In that context, the administration wishes to make clear that an invitation of this sort in no way suggests our endorsement of a particular point of view, and we will continue to affirm our commitment to the values of diversity, equality, and tolerance that underlie the greatness of Berkeley and, indeed, of our nation, Mogulof said in an email. The university is committed to freedom of expression: we cannot and will not engage in prior restraint of speech based on generalized concern that a speakers message may trigger disruptions.

The BCR, as a matter of standard practice, will need to ask for a security assessment from the campus police department, Mogulof added. If security is required, the group would have to pay only for very basicsecurity arrangements based on neutral criteria such as time, place, location, size of venue, and number of attendees.

The campus, as per the law, cannot and does not, require student groups to pay for any security arrangements UCPD believes to be necessary as a result of the speakers perspectives or the possibility of protest or disruption, Mogulof said. Those security costs are borne solely and exclusively by the campus.

Coulter is the author of about a dozen books including Slander: Liberal Lies About the American Right, If Democrats Had Any Brains, Theyd Be Republicans, Godless: The Church of Liberalism, Adios, America: The Lefts Plan to Turn Our Country into a Third World Hellhole, and most recently, In Trump We Trust: E Pluribus Awesome!

Ann Coulter to Speak at Berkeley Less Than 3 Months After Fiery … – Fox News Insider

Controversial conservative commentator Ann Coulter is scheduled to speak at the University of California, Berkeley in April, less than three months after an appearance by Milo Yiannopoulos sparked violent protests.

Young America's Foundation announced this weekthat the 11-time New York Times bestselling author is slated to give a talk on campus on April 27.

Coulter has often made headlines - and enemies - with her outspoken views on illegal immigration, memorably saying "Americans want less immigration,"we must stop illegal aliens who "rip off government programs," and "how many immigrants are enough?"

Some school organizers say they are concerned that Coulter's visit could result in protests and violence.

On February 1, Yiannopolous, then a Breitbart News editor, was forced to cancel an appearance at the school after violent protesters broke windows, damaged property and started fires.

We are pretty apprehensive right now about everything, said Pranav Jandahyala, president of the nonpartisan student political organization BridgeCal. But at the same time, whats pushing us forward is our optimism. We truly believe we can put on a great event.

This time, the College Republicans are working with BridgeCal, which says its hoping the university has a stronger security plan.

This time we are definitely going to push them to provide more security than they did last time, said Jandahlyala. More officers on the ground instead of in the balcony.

In a statement provided to the Washington Examiner, Coulter outlined her expectations for the event, quipping, "I hear they're nice people at Berkeley and expect a pleasant event and stimulating exchange of ideas."

The beloved singer-songwriter took part in Comedy Centrals Rob Lowe Roast and showcased her sense of humor, as she not only scalded the actor but fellow participant and conservative commentator Ann Coulter.

While smiling and strumming her guitar, she made a few cracks at Coulter, but one in particular stood out.

Jeff Ross is going to party like its 1999, Ann Coulter is going to vote like its 1899, she said, looking at Coulter and adding, Ann, you do look great though. Youre almost as thin as Donald Trumps chance of winning the election, so thats cool.

Little did she know her joke wouldnt have a shelf life.

When The Huffington Post asked about the burn during a Build Series interview with Jewel on Thursday, the Hands singer said, laughing,She won, they won. yup. Go them.

Jewel said shes always had a dark sense of humor, its just that not everyone knows about it.

"But people have seen me live and know I do a lot of stand-up in my shows. I have a very dark sense of humor. I think to survive the type of life Ive had, you just have to have a sense of humor, Jewel, who left home as a teen and lived out of a car for a year before making it into the music industry, said. So the people who are closest to me know my darkest, darkest skits I have a lot of characters and a lot of skits I do that are completely politically un-correct. But maybe theyll be another future for me and Ill be able to share some of that.

Still, dont think Jewel will save your soul with her one-liners.

Its not like my music at all, she quipped.

Controversial Speaker Ann Coulter to Appear at UC Berkeley Months After Fiery Protest – NBC Bay Area

Conservative commentator Ann Coulter is set to appear at UC Berkeley on April 27, just months after a talk by disgraced Breitbart editor Milo Yiannopoulos was cancelled amid fiery, violent protests.

Berkeley College Republicans, the campus group behind both speaking engagements, confirmed the visit to NBC Bay Area on Tuesday.

The Berkeley College Republicans have invited Ms. Coulter to speak at UC Berkeley because she has been one of the most vocal critics of illegal immigration in all its manifestations and was one of the earliest supporters of President Trump, from when he initially announced his candidacy down to the present day, said Naweed Tahmas, a spokesperson for the campus group.

Berkeley College Republicans is working with Young Americas Foundation, a conservative organization that regularly sponsors university appearances, to iron out the details, including a contract and scheduled appearance time. The group also plans to work with campus police to arrange security measures, Tahmas said.

University officials did not immediately return a request for comment.

Young Americas Foundation tweeted out its own unique confirmation of the Coulter event earlier on Tuesday, warning snowflakes a term used by the so-called alt-right, a populist fringe group made up of white nationalists, to describe liberals of the impending lecture.

Coulters visit will likely be seen as a test for UC Berkeley, historically known as the home of the free speech movement, which came under intense scrutiny in February after anti-Yiannopolous protesters smashed windows, started fistfights and set a lamppost ablaze with little interference from law enforcement.

The downtown riot made national news and prompted a response from President Donald Trump, who floated the idea of cutting federal funds from the university.

Coulter, who rose to fame in the 1990s as a political pundit on "Real Time With Bill Maher," is known for roiling those on the left with her inflammatory comments, particularly those about immigrants, people of color, the LGBTQ community and feminists.

Her most recent book, "In Trump We Trust: E Pluribus Awesome!" is a New York Times-bestseller that effectively serves as an ode to Trump and a screed against the mainstream political establishment and minority groups.

In the same way any immigrant to Finland makes it less white, any immigrant to America makes it less honest, she opines in the book. In the past, she has also advocated for bringing back literacy tests for voting, called public schools "babysitting" programs for "hoodlums, and said that scaling back womens rights is a "personal fantasy."

UC Berkeley spokesman Dan Mogulof said that the Berkeley College Republicans retain the right to invite to campus whomever they deem fit.

However, he said, the university's "administration wishes to make clear that an invitation of this sort in no way suggests our endorsement of a particular point of view, and we will continue to affirm our commitment to the values of diversity, equality, and tolerance that underlie the greatness of Berkeley and, indeed, of our nation."

Coulter is scheduled to speak in Modesto the day after the Berkeley engagement, courtesy of the Stanislaus GOP. Protest plans for that event have already spread on social media.
