More than 100 Republican women are gathered today to discuss how to draw in women voters and encourage them to take on leadership roles in the party and within their communities.

The Bridging the Gap Summit kicked off last night with a welcoming reception at the S.C. Aquarium and continued today with a series of meetings at the Memminger Auditorium.

Some of the Republican partys most influential women were expected to attend.

Controversial conservative columnist Ann Coulter delivered a keynote speech during this mornings session on getting more women into leadership roles. As she began, she spent a lot of time talking about immigration. She also said people like President Barack Obama as a person but that wont transfer to Hillary Clinton or Joe Biden if either of them get the nomination in 2016. No one likes Hillary personally, Coulter said.

She also said the GOP has a good chance in 2016, but the party needs to make sure not to screw the American populace by serving business only.

Conservatives and liberals, Coulter said, all have something in common. We all hate Obamacare.

Other sessions were to include how the party can appeal to minority and young women, and how it can draw in women at the state and local levels.

Other women expected to attend the event include columnist Star Parker, talk show host Dana Loesch and Republican National Committee co-chairwoman Sharon Day.

Karen Floyd, a conservative activist of Spartanburg, organized the event. Floyd is renowned as the first woman to chair South Carolinas Republican party.

GOP women gather to discuss connecting with women

CHARLESTON Some of the nations most influential conservative Republican women gather in Charleston this weekend for a meeting on how the party can better reach women voters.

The Bridging the Gap Summit will be attended by conservative columnists Ann Coulter and Star Parker, as well as conservative radio talk show host Dana Loesch and Sharon Day, the co-chairwoman of the Republican National Committee.

Republican activist Karen Floyd of Spartanburg, the first woman chair of the South Carolina GOP who is organizing the event, said the summit is about refining messages, recruiting the next generation of political leadership and networking to provide support for women who may offer to run for office.

The event, opening with a Friday reception followed by a day of meetings on Saturday, will be attended by 150 women, including Republican U.S. Reps. Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee, Renee Ellmers of North Carolina and Kay Granger of Texas.

Sessions include getting women into leadership roles, how the GOP can appeal to minority and young women, and how it can reach women at the state and local levels.

Those invited were selected by a committee. Floyd said research shows younger women tend to vote more heavily Democratic. The question is what compels that, and how do you translate that into a shift in voting? she said.

What we heard over and over again out of the last election is that the Republicans had the ideas and the Democrats had the heart, Floyd said. What they are really talking about is how authentic the message was. If these women can become comfortable with a message that resonates with them, they will be better deliverers of the message.
