Florida Republicans terrorized a teacher for her Black Lives Matter flag but now she’s prevailed – Salon

"Jesus himself never condemned slavery,"one Florida mansaid to defend the honor of Confederate leader Robert E. Lee during a March 2021 school board meeting in Jacksonville. "In fact, he said, slaves have an obligation to obey their master," the outraged white maninsisted.

A crowd had pounced to keep the students of Robert E. Lee High School, 70% of whom are Black, from changing the name to something less Confederacy-honoring.

"I was taught that the chiefs of the tribes in Africa sold their people into slavery," an angry white woman said as the white people behind her nodded vigorously. "So don't blame Robert E. Lee. Maybe you should be after your ancestors."

Alarmed by what she was hearing,Amy Donofrio decided to do something. She was a teacher at the school, located in Duval County, which has since been renamed Riverside High School. She knew how sentiments like the ones shared at the school board meeting made her students feel. "Students made it clear that they were dealing with a lot," Donofrio told Salon. "They were walking into our schools facing racism, frankly, from every corner."

Years before, Donofrio had helped her students start a group called EVACMovement. Once invited to speak at the White House with then-President Barack Obama, by 2021, students in the group were eager to strip their school of a name honoring a Confederate general who personally held over 200 people in slavery.

Lee High School (Photo courtesy of Amy Donofrio)So Donofrio took photos and videos from the school board meeting, including another one of a man asking, "If this high school is having problems, how long has it been predominantly African-American?" And she expressed concerns to the administration that such comments hurt her students. She would soon be removed from her classroom, publicly targeted by the Republican state government under Gov. Ron DeSantis, eventually fired, and threatened with having her teaching license stripped entirely.

But while Donofrio's life has been chaos in the years since the DeSantis administration made her a target in their "war on woke," she eventually prevailed. A Florida administrative judge just ruled in Donofrio's favor regarding the dispute that created the pretext to harass her: a Black Lives Matter flag she hung in her classroom.

Donofrio had been hanging the flag for some time before the school board meeting. "Especially as a white woman," she told Salon, it was important to let students "know that they're cared about." The flag, she said, was a simple way to make them "feel safe" so they could "get an education." Administrators had been complaining to her about it but had no policy to point to in order to justify taking it down. However, after the school board meeting, the pressure on Donofrio intensified. Pointing to a new policy barring teachers from trying "to influence students to support or oppose any candidate, party or issue," the administration ordered the flag removed. When she refused, they took it down for her and pulled her out of the classroom, while they investigated whether she had violated school rules.

The situation quickly escalated. A petition in support of Donofrio circulated by students quickly amassed thousands of signatures and the Southern Poverty Law Center sued the district on her behalf. But the DeSantis administration was determined to make Donofrio the face of "woke" teachers their administration was stirring up fear and hatred towards. In May of 2021,Florida Department of Education Commissioner Richard Corcoran singled out Donofrio during a speech at Hillsdale College, which, as Kathryn Joyce has reported for Salon, is the epicenter of the Christian right's assault on public education.Complaining about "an entire classroom memorialized to Black Lives Matter," Corcoran falsely declared, "We made sure she was terminated." In truth, Donofrio still had her job but was "assigned to paid, non-teaching duties," according to the school district's official statement. Before the summer was over, however, the school board filled Corcoran's wish, firing Donofrio and settling her lawsuit out of court. Still that was not the end of her woes. Within days of her firing, the state opened another investigation, this time into whether Donofrio's teacher's license should be revoked entirely.

Donofrio feels she was targeted in order to create "an environment of fear" for teachers across Florida. DeSantis was soon promoting a series of policies, such as the "don't say gay" lawand the "stop woke" act aimedat prohibiting discussions of racism and sexual diversity that Republicans claimed was inappropriate for public school students. Critics of these bills pointed out that the language about what is and isn't allowed was vague, which Donofrio argues was on purpose. "If somebody high up doesn't like you or disagrees with, you watch out," she said. "The repercussions can stretch into a lot of different parts of your life."

DeSantis, for his part, denied that the bills were meant to lead to widespread book banning, harassment of LGBTQ teachers or students, or the end of teaching about segregation or slavery in history classes. But that is exactly what happened in much of the state. Educational programs about the civil rights movement were canceled. Teachers were forced to lock up their entire classroom library. Books about slavery, the Holocaust, and even 9/11 were banned. Even the dictionary was banned in one school district. The bans and harassment spread to other states. A 2022 analysis from the Washington Post found that Donofrio was not alone: Over 160 teachers were driven out of their jobs by Republican-led attacks on public education.

All of these machinations helped DeSantis raise his national profile as a right-wing culture warrior but did not help him win the Republican presidential nomination. Despite spending $160 million to defeat Donald Trump, the Florida governor only got 21% of the Iowa caucus votes, and quit the race shortly thereafter. His "war on woke" turned out to be so impractical that he ended up signing another bill in Aprillimiting non-parents to one challenge per month.

Donofrio, meanwhile, was still fighting to keep her teaching license. Finally, she got a hearing before an administration judge in February and a decision in April. The judge ruled for Donofrio on the issue of the Black Lives Matter flag. Donofrio's "intent to affirm and support her students was clear, and she had a successful history of promoting the physical and emotional well-being of her minority students," the judge wrote. Instead, the judge noted "the School environment became hostile after administration removed the flag," because the principal "had to work hard, meeting with students and making extra efforts to assure students that he supported them and that their lives did indeed matter to him." In June, the final hearing was held, and the DeSantis government lost again: Donofrio's teaching license remains intact.

"I feel vindicated, but I also feel sad," Donofrio told Salon. Sad, she explained, because "a lot of teachers have been leaving Florida and quitting schools in Florida because of all of this."

"I think our kids here are worth fighting for," she added, noting that ultimately, teachers alone cannot solve this problem. "We can't just encourage teachers to stand up and stand with our kids without giving them the resources to do it and survive."

Donofrio isn't sure what's next for her. She hasn't gotten her job back at the now-Riverside High School. Still, she said, she's feeling "hopeful" after this legal victory. "I also want teachers to look at the case," she said, "and realize if you stand up for what's right, you can win too. It is possible."

Black Lives Matter sign to return. Sacramento’s Oak Park monument will receive updates – ABC10.com KXTV

Zach Trowbridge created the sign as part of Project Say Their Names, an effort he started to share names and stories of unarmed Black people killed by police.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. A Black Lives Matter sign in the Oak Park neighborhood will return after some repairs and updates, according to its creator.

Zach Trowbridge created and raised the sign as part of Project Say Their Names, an effort he started to compile and share names and stories of unarmed Black people killed by police. He created the sign shortly after George Floyds murder in May 2020; a history of Trowbridges sign can be read here.

The sign was located at McClatchy Park at the corner of 34th Street and 5th Avenue. It was removed for repairs and updates in 2023, Trowbridge said.

I took the BLM sign back in a few weeks ago for repairs and updates, and its been an incredibly slow, challenging process with all the fine detail work, Trowbridge wrote in a March 2023 Instagram post.

Some community members concerned about gentrification expressed to ABC10 they are worried the sign won't return.

I understand the urgency of returning the sign quickly and appreciate patience, Trowbridge wrote in a notice placed at the signs vacancy. Since its creation, we have lost many more Black lives to police violence. It is with a heavy heart that I am updating the sign to include the names of additional lives lost.

There is no set date for the projects completion.

Cincinnati Artist Collective Creates Sculptural Series that Spells Out Black Lives Matter – Cincinnati CityBeat

A giant sculpture will soon rise in Roselawn at the corner of Reading and Section roads as part of a citywide art installment. The 10-foot R sculpture, created by Annie Ruth, is the first installation of 16 giant-letter sculptures and an exclamation point that will appear in various places around Cincinnati, eventually spelling Black Lives Matter!

In a celebration of community, strength and diversity in Cincinnati, the work is part of local artist collective Black Art Speaks sculptural series. A dedication ceremony will take place in Roselawn on Thursday, May 2 at 11 a.m. when the R will be unveiled.

The works are inspired by two of Black Art Speaks own creations, Cincinnatis Black Lives Matter muraland Alandes Powell's poem "We Want What You Want.

Each of the giant letter installations will resemble about 70%

Painting of the "R" sculpture in progress.

Ruth is a founding member of Black Art Speaks, as well as an internationally known artist. She is the project manager for many of the collectives installations and projects. Powell tells CityBeat that she plays a huge role in the organization.

Because of all [Ruth] does for Roselawn, for this community, how talented she is and the fact that she created the first letter that stands up is amazing to me, Powell says. So she continues to not just explode in her craft, but just for her community, and how much she loves Roselawn, how much

The "R" sculpture before it was painted.

The next two sculptures slated for installation are A and !. The A will appear in Avondale near the end of May or the beginning of June; it represents the issue of gun violence, Powell says. The exclamation point will be installed in June in the West End of Cincinnati.

How can we have deeper dialogue using art and actually continue this conversation removing the noise of Black Lives Matter, but still making sure the movement is important? How do we take some of that political piece out of it and make people really understand our hearts?" Powell says. "So in Roselawn, just taking the R, knowing that it's about the bias of Black men and how important it is for them to see the beauty in themselves and for other people to be so inclined to see it as well, is just one piece of Black Lives Matter. So the vision and the hope is that we can have these courageous conversations and dialogue using the beauty of art to change us and change how people see us. It's an internal peace and external.

She was quickly dubbed the San Francisco Karen, a term used to describe privileged and racist White women.

Juanillo has responded to her latest comments saying She sat for Dr Phil Primetime because she Wants her life back. My response? So does George Floyd.

Alexander says she still received almost daily sometimes threatening messages about that encounter in June of 2020.

I didnt see what he was writing. I came up from behind him. He could have been writing I love Santa Clause. It didnt matter what he was writing. It was the fact that he was doing something on the historical monument house of my neighbor.

She continues to say that Jaunillo did not live in the building, which has long been confirmed that he did live there, although he has since reportedly moved.

Black History Matters; MET Gala Attendee Lewis Hamilton Is Taking On The World With One Outfit at a Time – EssentiallySports

Im not going to stay quiet, said Lewis Hamilton when asked about his support for the Black Lives Matter movement post George Floyds unfortunate death. And he hasnt! The 7x Formula 1 world champion never leaves a stone unturned to raise his voice in support of equal rights and substantive representation. It all began in 2021 when Lewis Hamilton took budding black designers to the Met Gala, having booked an entire table for them. But this years iconic ode to Black history is unparalleled. It wont be wrong to say that Lewis Hamilton is taking on the world, one outfit at a time, and we are floored.

Sir Lewis Hamilton arrived at the MET Gala 2024 right after an exhausting race weekend in Miami. This is not the first time he has pulled something like this as in 2018, Hamilton partied in New York to celebrate his first collection, then flew to Singapore and delivered the best lap of his glorious career. He faced everyone, including the late Niki Laudas (triple F1 world champion and senior advisor at Mercedes) displeasure at his other ventures. But Lewis never backed down. He only grew stronger in his expression of his love for fashion. And 6 years later, The Garden of Time came alive.

I hope the sun pours light upon our skin. And we melt into each other, into everything. Maybe the trees will speak, as they sometimes do. Whispers from the shade. , , Thisis a poem called The Gardener byAlex Wharton. If you think why am I in a full-blown recitation amid a fashion article, it is because Lewis Hamilton chose to express this poem by a black poet on his outfit dedicated to Britains first black gardener. Lewis was wearing a custom Burberry look which was created after researching this years theme, The Garden of Time. And what is more timeless than the history of those who couldnt write it for themselves?

Lewis Hamilton spoke to Vogue Magazine and said that while deep diving into and researching for the theme, he came across an 18th-century gardener who, through slavery times, came over from Africa to Wales and became the first Black gardener in Wales [John Ystumllyn]. Thats where the inspiration for his look [and jewelry] came from. The slave trade was abolished in the British Empire in 1807 and the Slavery Abolition Act went into effect in 1834. But Hamilton remembered to pay homage to people who suffered through this. He talked about John, saying, Through adversity, he really triumphed.

Explaining his outfit, he said, Its Burberry. I did a lot of research, [and] came across this 18th-century gardener that through slavery times came over from Africa to Wales & became the first black gardener in Wales, so through adversity really triumphed. So thats really where the inspiration has come from. I like that the thorns here are ready to show the pain through that slavery trade time. Explaining his process, Hamilton added,I like to get deep with it you have to [take the theme seriously], you have to get in character.

But this wasnt the only time he made a statement via his fashion statement. His last Met Gala appearance had him making a generous gesture for budding black designers.
