The Tor Project, protecting online anonimity: Jacob Appelbaum at TEDxFlanders
Jacob Appelbaum introduces the Tor Project and the Tor Network - an anonymity network used to protect people online. It is used by many people around the world to circumvent censorship and to stay safe online. In thespirit of ideas worth spreading, TED has created a program called TEDx. TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Our event is called TEDxFlanders, where x = independently organized TED event. At our TEDxFlanders event, TEDTalks video and live speakers will combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events, including ours, are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations.)From:TEDxTalksViews:125 10ratingsTime:18:35More inScience Technology

Stopping SOPA: Copyright, Free Speech, and Popular Constitutionalism – Video

Stopping SOPA: Copyright, Free Speech, and Popular Constitutionalism
Speaker: Professor Edward Lee During late 2011 and January 2012, millions of people protested the passage of the controversial copyright bill the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) in Congress. The protests culminated in the largest online protest in the history of the Internet, with web giant Wikipedia and thousands of other websites going black in a day of self-censorship. In a few short months, the protesters achieved something remarkable: they defeated money, politicians, Hollywood, and the copyright lobby, all in the name of a "free and open Internet." This talk with Professor Edward Lee, explains these grassroots movements as a form of popular constitutionalism. Courts didn #39;t define speech rights. People did. And, in the end, it was the people #39;s view of free speech that carried the day. Hong Kong Director Johnnie To Debuts "Surprise" Film in Rome – Video

Hong Kong Director Johnnie To Debuts "Surprise" Film in Rome
Hong Kong cult film director Johnnie To, known for hits such as "Election" and "Life Without Principle", is presenting his new movie "Drug War" at the International Rome Film Festival this year. The action thriller was originally announced as "Surprise Movie 2" at the Rome Film Festival. The artistic director of the festival, Marco Mueller, first started announcing "surprise" films in 2006. The official names of the films are released late in order to sidestep issues with censorship in the directors #39; home countries. "Drug War" is Johnnie To #39;s first film shot entirely in mainland China. The movie follows a group of detectives attempting to bring down a major cocaine ring. The police captain makes a deal with an arrested drug lord to waive the death penalty in exchange for his help. [Johnnie To, Director]: "The idea actually came from the fact that not many countries in the world give death sentence to drug traffickers and other criminals, whereas in China you can be sentenced to death even if you traffic a very small amount, it #39;s still a crime punishable by death which is something I found fascinating." The film was shot in Tianjin, a northern Chinese port city, which said he chose because of the cold, snowy, winter landscape, and also because of the harbor, which was useful for the movie #39;s drug trafficking theme. To said the experience of filming in China was rewarding, but he hoped the situation in the mainland would improve in the future.
