China's Censorship Machine Tried To Hide One Bizarre Rumor About Why Xi Jinping Was Late

AP

The delay prompted a Twitter meme, with people all around the world tweeting theories as to why #WhyXiJinpingIsLate.

While almost all of these tweets were ridiculous, it appears that China's censorship machine may have been taking some online rumors seriously.

China Digital Times, a website currently blocked in China that aggregates information about censorship in the country, published a recent list of words that appeared to be blocked on Chinese social media. The first entry is especially interesting:

Party Congress Brawl?:Online sources claim that a fight held up the announcement of the newPolitburo Standing Committeemembers at the18th Party Congresson Wednesday. It is claimed that former Iron LadyWu YiandChen Zhilicame to blows when ballots were being cast. This story has not been verified.

- assembly hall + fight (+) - hold a meeting + fight (+) - after the meeting + fight (+)

Of course, there is no real reason to believe the theory online theories are everywhere in China, and just because China's censorship says you can't spread a rumor doesn't mean its true. However, it is strangely reminiscent of another recent rumor which said Xi Jinping's mysterious absence earlier this year was caused by a flying chair thrown during an earlier political fistfight.

Shadows of Liberty | Opening
Documentary, UK 2012 A Film by Jean-Philippe Tremblay A Docfactory production International Sales: First Hand Films 90% of the media in the USA are controlled by five big for-profit-conglomerats, creating a media monopoly that manipulates our political, economical, and social world. Shadows of Liberty reveals the extraordinary truth behind the news media: censorship, cover-ups and corporate control. Filmmaker Jean-Philippe Tremblay takes an intrepid journey through the darker corridors of the American media landscape, where global conglomerates call the shots. For decades, their overwhelming influence has distorted news journalism and compromised its values. In highly revealing stories, renowned journalists, activists and academics give insider accounts of a broken media system. Controversial news reports are suppressed, people are censored for speaking out, and lives are shattered as the arena for public expression is turned into a private profit zone. Tracing the story of media manipulation through the years, Shadows of Liberty poses a crucial question: why have we let a handful of powerful corporations write the news? We #39;re left in no doubt - media reform is urgent and freedom of the press is fundamental. With Danny Glover, Julian Assange, Dan Rather, Roberta Baskin, and many others.From:FirstHandFilms1Views:10 0ratingsTime:03:05More inFilm Animation
