BC High hockey explains his case in the Catholic conference – gotech daily

BC High stepped up its game when it needed it the most.

In a crucial Catholic conference, the Eagles earned their 10th league point with an exciting 4-2 win over Xaverian Wednesday night at UMass-Boston.

We are proud to be the best competition in the state. I think it is proof year after year, but especially this year there is a lot of parity. We say a Catholic Conference team can beat a different one every night, but this really proves it, said Eagles coach John Flaherty.

Junior attacker Colin Norton led the Eagles with two goals and an assist while Xaverian senior Stefano Lanci scored a goal and an assist in the loss.

The match started quickly and both teams wanted to surpass the others. Matt Keohane opened the score for BC High at 2.30 am by hitting a loose puck past Xaverian goalkeeper Kyle Harvey from a wrap-around. Xaverian reacted four minutes later after dueling cross controls brought the penalties to 4. Ty Marchi recovered the puck from behind the Eagles net and found a Lanci streak in front of the goal, which took the chance beyond freshman goalkeeper Tom Kiesewetter.

BC High wasted no time to regain the lead in the second. Norton broke away from everyone in the confrontation and sailed a shot over goal. The Eagles retained possession and Norton found a second chance, this time a shot goes past Harvey to make it 2-1 Eagles, 21 seconds in the second period.

Norty is an experienced player. He really grew up as a junior this year, Flaherty said about Nortons great achievements, in these types of games against very good teams you need your best guys to be their best and I think you saw with Keohane, [Colman] Benson, [Aidan] Carey and Norton.

The Eagles doubled their lead 5:53 to third when Norton intercepted a Xaverian transition and tipped the puck to Aidan Carey. The senior advance went 1 on 1 with Harvey and calmly hit his shot under the Xaverian goalkeeper to make it 3-1 Eagles.

Despite the deficit with two goals, Xaverian did not stand still. With 4:28 to go and a power-play opportunity for them, Xaverian captain Matt Ryan cut the lead of the Eagles in half, received a Lanci pass on the left wing and hit a shot from Kiesewetter. After he had earned another power play with 1:45 left, Xaverian Harvey pulled over and sent the sink to the Eagles. Still, it was Norton who came to the rescue again, stealing possession on a back check and firing a shot at Xaverians empty net to achieve the 4-2 victory.

BC High boys’ hockey controls pace in home win over Xaverian – The Boston Globe

The Catholic Conference, as is the case seemingly every season, has been defined by parity.

But with the regular season winding down, the fifth-ranked BC High boys hockey team may have just positioned itself in the drivers seat with a 4-2 win over No. 6 Xaverian on Wednesday night in Dorchester.

The Eagles (9-3-2) controlled the pace throughout as they moved to 4-2-2 atop the league standings, dominating 5-on-5 play against the Hawks (8-3-4), who fell to 2-3-2 in conference action.

Colin Norton had two goals and an assist for the Eagles, including an empty-netter from mid-ice after stripping Matt Ryan on the backcheck during a 6-on-4 penalty kill to ice the game.

BC High took a 1-0 lead after Matt Keohane banked in a shot from behind the net that bounced off goalie Kyle Harvey and into the net at 2:44. Xaverian answered at 6:30 with a fluky goal of its own while playing 4-on-4. Ty Marchi chased a rebound behind goal and fed a pass in front that hit off the back of BC goalie Tom Kiesewetters leg and onto the blade of Stefano Lanci for the goal.

Norton pushed the Eagles back in front just 21 seconds into the second after digging a puck out of a crowd of skates in the slot to beat Harvey blocker side. But the Eagles couldnt put things away with Xaverian on their heels, taking a pair of penalties in the second that kept the pressure on.

Kiesewetter made six stops on the penalty kill in the second. The freshman finished with 15 saves. Harvey pushed away 21 for the Hawks.

Honestly, in a Catholic Conference game, I dont know if anyone is ever on the ropes, said BC High coach John Flaherty. They have weapons; theyve got kids that can move and kids that can shoot. For us, it was all about sticking with it and not getting too far ahead of ourselves and making sure we were taking care of pucks and moving things north.

BC High made it 3-1 at 5:53 in the third when a turnover at their defensive blue line allowed Aidan Carey to walk in for a breakaway goal. Xaverian clawed back with a power play goal from Ryan at 10:32.

BC High was then whistled for too many men with 1:45 remaining. Norton finished things before the Hawks could get a shot on net with the two-man advantage.

Sam Mendes Tops DGA Awards with ‘1917’; Bill Hader, Alma Har’el Score Wins – Collider.com

The Directors Guild of America Awards were held last night, and one of the most reliable predictors of Oscar success has crowned Sam Mendes with its highest achievement in feature film directing. Mendes, who won this award in 1999 for American Beauty, bested Bong Joon-ho (Parasite), Quentin Tarantino (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood), Martin Scorsese (The Irishman), and Taika Waititi (Jojo Rabbit) to take home the top prize for his work in bringing the World War I film 1917 to the screen. The one-take movie was a late-comer to the Oscar race but has been steamrolling the major precursor awards, also winning the top prize from the Producers Guild of America.

The last six DGA winners in a row have gone on to also win the Oscar for Best Director so this is good news for Mendes and 1917 as a whole, although I wouldnt give up hope on a Bong Joon-ho win just yet. The Parasite love is strong.

Elsewhere at the DGA awards, Alma Harel won the First-Time Feature Film award for her striking, intimate work in bringing Honey Boy to the screen, and American Factory filmmakers Steven Bognar and Julia Reichert won the Documentary prize.

On the TV side of things, Bill Hader won his second DGA for Best Comedy Series, scoring a trophy for the truly brilliant Barry Season 2 episode ronny/lily. Nicole Kassell took the Dramatic Series prize for her also brilliant work in bringing the pilot of Watchmen to the screen, while Johan Renck won the Movies for Television and Limited Series award for Chernobyl.

BC High evens the score against Catholic Memorial – Boston Herald

When BC High lost a heartbreaker to Catholic Memorial back on January 8, Matt Keohane and his teammates circled their next tilt with the Knights on their respective calendars, revenge on their minds.

On Sunday morning, they accomplished their mission. Keohane potted a pair of goals and had an assist, as the Eagles earned a convincing 4-1 victory over their archrivals from the west side of town at Edward T. Barry rink.

It was huge, Keohane said of the win. And it was even bigger because they beat us earlier in the season. So we had something to prove tonight, and we came out and did it.

Against a fellow Catholic Conference juggernaut, BC High looked formidable, and thats putting it simply. The Eagles (8-3-1) only needed 3:14 of game action to put one on the board in the opening period, as Keohane corralled a rebound in front of the Catholic Memorial net. As Dom Walecka dove to try and reel it back in, the senior center tapped a shot over the sprawling goaltender, finding twine to provide BC High a 1-0 advantage.

With 1:48 remaining in the opening stanza, the Knights were whistled for cross-checking, and BC High was quick to cash in. 21 seconds later, junior left winger Colin Norton buried a shot for the Eagles to make it a 2-0 contest entering intermission. Keohane and Michael Dragon were credited with the assists during the frantic sequence.

Then, at the 2:59 mark of the second period, Keohane struck again, as Norton fed him the puck. The senior reared back, and uncorked a rocket from the slot, finding twine as BC High watched its lead balloon to 3-0.

However, after being held to just one shot in the opening period, Catholic Memorial (6-3-5) began to find a rhythm late in the second. After Gavin Havens won a faceoff, sophomore Tommy Goonan hauled the puck in, then forced a wrister on net. The defenseman didnt miss his target, as the shot went top-shelf, and the Knights cut it back to 3-1.

We just talked about getting back to what we were doing, BC High coach John Flaherty said. Getting back to the basics. C.M. outworked us for there for stretches of the second period, and there was a time where it looked like we couldnt get it out of our zone. So credit to them for winning faceoffs, sprinting to get to pucks. We had to get back to what we were doing in the first period, and I think you saw that in the third period, we got back to playing the way we were.

With 6:09 left in regulation, Brian Bulger sealed things for BC High, as he launched a shot from the blue line, which whistled into the bottom corner of the Catholic Memorial cage to make it 4-1, putting any creeping thoughts of doubt fans in attendance may have had to bed.

Dragon notched two assists to aid the Eagles.

The critical win only bolsters BC Highs case for a Super Eight berth. However, Flaherty is only focused on the next few games. The Eagles can clinch a Div. 1 tournament spot with another victory.

Its big for consideration, Flaherty said. Its big for all those things that they talk about in those meetings. But were still two points away from qualifying. So we have to qualify before we can even be considered for any tournament. But any time you play C.M., and you get in the win column, its big for the school, and big for the community.

BC High doesnt have the luxury of taking nights off. The Eagles will welcome another Catholic Conference foe, and arguably the top team in the state when Xaverian pays a visit to UMass-Boston this upcoming Wednesday.

I told everyone that were not a joke this year, Keohane said. I think a lot of people didnt believe in us this year, and I think that coming out right now and proving that we can beat a top-three team is huge for us.
