THAT’S A WRAP: Final thoughts on the local boys and girls basketball seasons – The Daily News of Newburyport

What a winter it was for our local basketball players.

The playoff atmosphere is something every high school athlete should experience, and there was plenty of postseason basketball for our hoopsters considering 80-percent of our boys and girls teams all went dancing. Only Georgetown did not qualify for the tournament for both boys and girls, but Triton, Newburyport, Pentucket and Amesbury all had at least one bout in the bracket.

Unfortunately, most of our local teams had to square off with one another early, but it made for some white-knuckle action on the court especially for the Triton boys, who won close over Pentucket before losing a heart-breaker on the road against Newburyport.

We even had a team play on the parquet at the TD Garden for the first time since the Pentucket boys two years ago thanks to an incredible run by the Amesbury girls.

Before we turn the page on the season, here are some final thoughts on our local squads, beginning with those mighty Indians.

Its safe to say the Amesbury girls were the second best team in Division 3 basketball considering the Archbishop Williams team the Indians nearly beat in the semis went on to destroy Hoosac, 62-37 in the final. A 22-2 overall record is quite the accomplishment.

So what made the red-and-white such a machine?

Balance and big time playmakers.

Head coach Matt Willis had the luxury of going to the hot-hand on a game-to-game basis. Sophomore Flannery OConnor and senior captain Maddie Napoli were consistent offensive performers from wire-to-wire, as indicated by their selection as the Cape Ann League Baker co-Players of the year, but the Indians relied heavily senior captains Julia LaMontagne and Abbie Sartori, fellow senior Mikayla Porcaro, freshman Alli Napoli and sophomore defensive specialist Chelsea Lynch.

It was fitting to see the elder Napoli close out her high school basketball career with an incredible playoff run. When I first started here, she was a sophomore and important piece on the softball team that won a Division 3 North title, so it was nice to see her play so well in another tournament run.

Seeing the team take down Bishop Fenwick was special for many reasons.Fenwick got the better of Amesbury last year, and while she wouldnt admit it, you could tell the victory meant a lot to former Crusader Mikayla Porcaro and her current teammates.

The loss to Archbishop Williams was a tough one. Amesbury held the lead for the majority of the game, and would have likely defeated Hoosac in the final, but closing out their careers at the TD Garden will be something the girls can remember for the rest of their lives.

With the loss of such crucial seniors, how will Amesbury be going forward?

Hard to replace the captains, but its also near impossible to stop OConnor. As she continues to develop an already impressive touch around the rim and repertoire of post moves, OConnor will be one of the top players in the CAL next winter. Alli Napoli, the other half of the Indians splash sisters, gives Willis a powerful, one-two punch with OConnor going forward.

The best news for Tribe fans is the way the two underclassmen delivered in the playoffs.

Next up is coach Tom LItaliens Clipper boys, who made it all the way to the Division 3 North semifinals to finish at 19-4.

After the first two games of the regular season, its hard to imagine Newburyport would go on to win 13 straight and earn a No. 2 seed in the D3 North tournament.

But thanks to a commitment to LItaliens system by every man on the squad, the Clippers experienced tremendous success on the court including a satisfying victory over Lynnfield late in the regular season and then the thrilling triumph over Triton in front of a massive crowd at the NHS gym.

Like the Indian girls, Newburyport relied on many important players, led by the seniors and a stellar sophomore. Senior captain Nick Rogers was the most dangerous man from downtown in the area as he developed into more than just a spot-up shooter. He hit many a contested, pull-up trifecta and was a nightmare for opposing defenses, while senior captain Brendan Powers and seniors Cam MacRae and Rob Shay were instrumental in the teams success.

Then there was Casey McLaren. After struggling some with his shot early in the season, the sophomore shook off the slump and became one of the best two-way players I saw this winter, and he rose to the big moments in the playoff wins over Lynn Tech and the Vikings.

With McLaren for two more years, Newburyport has something to build around despite the loss of the seniors. George Coryell is another guy to keep an eye on as he is an outstanding defender who has shown flashes of offensive ability. Hes energy guy, and with a few developmental tweaks to his offensive game, a definite candidate for CAL all-star next year.

If I were picking a front-runner for the most successful squad in 2017/2018, for both boys and girls, it would be the Pentucket ladies.

Head coach John McNamara continues to churn out successful season after successful season, and this was another strong winter for the CAL Kinney champion Sachems despite how it ended when the team lost at home to eventual D2 North champ and state runner-up Arlington Catholic.

Well start with the seniors.

McNamara said his four eldest players and team captains Colleen Jameson, Alyssa Demeule, Natalie Davis and Katie Giusti were four of the best captains hes had in a while, and while only Jameson and Demeule were heavy presences on the court this year, the entire group will be missed going forward.

The biggest reason for optimism is the young talent.

Liv Cross, a sophomore, emerged as a talented, two-way player and very good rebounder as she will be the focal point in the paint going forward. But its the young guards coupled with junior Isabella Doyle, that must have McNamara grinning wide at the prospect of next year.

Freshman Casey Hunt, sophomore Maddie Doyle, sophomore Jess Galvin, freshman Angelica Hurley and freshman Angelina Yacubacci all got valuable experience for the Sachems this year and each brings a interesting offensive skill set and serious defensive intensity to the table.

The Triton boys (15-8) nearly pulled off the improbable upset of Newburyport in the playoffs in a year in which coach Dave Clays guys were able to rally from a disappointing end to 2015/16 to qualify for the postseason this winter.

Senior captain Jack McCarthy was one of the most improved guys on the court from a year ago among local players as he developed into a really tough slasher while playing excellent defense, which is required of any guy who wants to play for Clay. Senior captain Liam Spillane wasnt the most skilled guy on the court in any game, but his set of intangibles and overall physicality was a big reason why the Vikings were such a formidable foe.

Then there was junior captain Will Parsons, who might have the best offensive game of any local player, and his willingness to sacrifice his body at the other end resulted in a dozen charges taken for the forward. Parsons, like Ports McLaren, is one of the guys to watch in the league next year.

Rounding out the girls playoff teams are Triton (13-9) and Newburyport (11-10)

The Vikings dispatched Melrose at home in the postseason thanks to an incredible performance by Tessa Lafrance in what was a historic season for the senior captain as she etched her name in the program record books by eclipsing the 1000-point bench mark.

Head coach Dan Boyle will certainly miss Lafrance and fellow senior captains Erin Savage and Melanie Primpas, but he will return some tough players in Alex and Meredith Kennedy, Bridget Sheehan, Colleen McCarthy and Caitlin White and Izzy Cambese who are all familiar with Boyles system.

The Clipper girls were one-and-done after falling to Pentucket in the opening round, but its hard to get down on Port considering the team lost sophomore star Anna Hickman to a knee injury midway through the season.

Hickman will be back next year along with gifted point guard Krysta Padellaro, while the evolution of forwards Katie Hadden (sophomore) and Paige Gouldthorpe (junior) make the Clippers a very dangerous team headed into next year.

Senior captains Olivia Olson and Kaitlin Ahern are the two seniors graduating.

The last two boys teams are Pentucket and Amesbury, who both qualified for the tournament before falling in their respective first games.

The Indians will have to replace Kyle Martin, Will Parady and Eric Dawes, the three senior captains, but the Indians have some promising guys returning in Billy Sydlowski, John Sydlowski and Zach Labrecque.

Pentucket should be in good shape moving forward with Nathan McGrail, Spencer Pacy and Gus Flaherty all coming back, but replacing Jimmy Cleary and Conor ONeil will be no easy task.

The two teams who didnt qualify were the Georgetown squads.

Hunter Lane and Colin Dow give the Royals (6-14) a lot to feel good about inside moving on to next year and the team should only improve under head coach Brian Shields, who was in his first season with the squad as head coach.

The girls meanwhile went 3-19, but have some players with high character and solid skill returning, led by the Donoghue sisters Brenna and Caitlin, who both earned second team CAL all-star honors.

Acton-Boxborough sprint medley quartet places 3rd at nationals – Wicked Local Boxborough

On Saturday the Acton-Boxborough boys indoor track team took on the nations best high school athletes at New Yorks Armory track for the New Balance National indoor track and field championships.

The Colonial boys ran the championship section of the 1,600-meter sprint medley relay (200, 200, 400, 800).

Leading things off, Matt Antes ate the first turn up and rounded the one lap in 23.4, then handing the baton off to Brendan Flaherty for another swift 23.4.

From there, Will Collins cruised a 50.99 400m split, handing off to Colin Grip for the final 800 leg. Grip stalked the four runners in front of him and picked them off one by one. Grips split was 1 minute, 53.54 seconds, giving A-B third place in the nation and securing All-American status.

Their time of 3:31.31 eclipsed the previous school record of 3:31.50 set in 2013 (at the same meet and track) by another All-American team of Will Tejeda, Andrew Doelp, Brian Sommers and Tim Cox.

BC High 3, Walpole 2 (SO): Super season stopped in Game 3 shootout – Wicked Local Walpole

By Dan Zimmermanwalpole@wickedlocal.com

The remarkable season for the Walpole High boys hockey team, which featured more success than any in its storied history, came to an abrupt halt Saturday night after a shootout in the deciding Game 3 of the Super 8 tournament quarterfinals.

After skating to a 2-2 tie through regulation and both overtime periods, No. 2 BC High scored twice to No. 7 Walpoles one during the shootout segment to claim the best-of-three series and advance.

Walpoles season, which wrapped up at 23-2-1, will unquestionably stand the test of time and be talked about for years to come, especially by the scores of supporters on hand to witness the monumental finale at the Chelmsford Forum.

After taking the series opener, 1-0, Walpole was outskated in the first two periods of Game 2 and fell, 2-0. Despite the defeat, the first of the season, there was a positive attitude in the Rebels camp because of a third period in which they controlled the tempo and outshot BC High by a wide margin. Walpole sought to duplicate that effort at the outset of Game 3.

We talked about that over the last few days, said Walpole coach Ron Dowd. They did everything we asked of them and took it to them right from the start tonight. Thats a really good team over there.

BC High claimed a 1-0 lead at 8:09 of the first period on a goal by Michael Ball, who shoveled the puck behind James Corcoran on a second effort. But before long, a determined Rebels squad tied it and soon climbed into a 2-1 lead.

Standing on the doorstep, Ryan Boyajian collected a feed from Ted McElaney and deftly lifted the puck over the catching glove of Eagles netminder Luke Garrity to tie it at 1-1.

With less than a minute remaining in the first, Pat Donovan was chasing down a wayward puck in the offensive zone and with his back to the net and took a half-hearted backhanded swipe. The go-ahead goal, assisted by Ryan Birch and Cam Martin, took a funny hop, handcuffing Garrity as it tumbled in the net.

That was part of our game plan, explained Dowd. Just throw it at the net as much as possible and see what happens. You need a few good bounces when you play a team like this.

Trailing 2-1, BC High cranked up the offense in the second. Corcoran came up big a number of times but with seconds left, yielded a power play goal to Thomas Kramer, who unleashed a rising wristshot from the right circle to tie it.

The first overtime period, six minutes of 4-on-4, was rather uneventful, save for a 6-0 shot disparity by the Eagles. But in the next overtime span, featuring 3-on-3 skaters and a ton of open ice, Walpoles Owen Hunter was taken down from behind on a partial breakaway. Awarded a penalty shot by the officials and a chance to send the Eagles packing, Hunter skated in, swept wide but was stopped when Garrity kicked out the right pad.

With Corcoran in net and stingy as ever, Dowd felt the Rebels held an advantage going into a shootout. And after the first round, with Boyajian beating Garrity while Evan DeLano missed, it looked like the coach might be on to something. But back-to-back Eagles goals in the third and fourth rounds put the Rebels down 4-3. Neither Hunter nor Donovan, the final shooters for Walpole, could beat Garrity to alter the shortfall.

Credit to Walpole, said BC High Coach John Flaherty whose team advances to face Central Catholic in the semifinals. Theyre a well-coached team and they have amazing fan support. We knew we were in for a long series. A pair of overtimes and a shootout is longer than I wouldve liked but I think it was a fitting end to a great series between two very good teams.

Walpoles departing seniors include Corcoran, Martin, Hunter, Pat Donovan. Michael Roche, Andrew Moore, Michael Timson, McCauley Stewart, Colin Buckley, Luke Donovan, Liam Fisher, David White, Paul Heffernan, Jon Stasiukevicius,

I couldnt be any more proud of these kids and they way they competed from Game 1 to Game 25, said Dowd. Im just proud of them.

Raiders on track for team title; Beau Bayless, Matthews advance to … – Sharonherald

HERSHEY The number 13 may be considered unlucky in some circles, but not when it comes to the PIAA State Class AA Wrestling Championships.

Thats the number of medals that Mercer County wrestlers will be bring home after the championship and consolation finals that kick off at 2 p.m. today at Hershey Giant Center.

It was one of the strongest performances in county annals, and once again it is the Reynolds High Raiders leading the way as they are on the verge of securing their second state title this season, having won the dual-meet title earlier.

It has been a record-setting season for Coach Casey Taylors charges and that continued this weekend, as 8 of their 10 state qualifiers earned places, a school record.

Seven local matmen reached the semifinals Friday night, but only a pair Reynolds Beau Bayless (106) and Cole Matthews (138) earned spots in todays title matches.

We didnt do as well in the semis as I thought we would, said Taylor after only two of the five Raider entries came through. But overall Im so proud of this team and the way they competed and made this a historic weekend.

Competing in the 3rd-place consolations today are: Reynolds Gage Bayless (126), Gavin Wilkerson (160), Joel Leise (170), Cole Rickert (285).

Vying for 5th: Slippery Rocks Michael Doerflinger (138); Greenvilles Blake Reynolds (220).

Shooting for 7th: Reynolds Andrew Ischo (120), Chaise Hauck (145); Commodore Perrys John Mott (145); Sharons Nick McClimans (170); Greenvilles Jacob McMaster(182).

Following isa look at how locals fared Friday:

Finalists

Beau Bayless came in as the top-rated wrestler at 106 and he has done nothing to make anyone think differently. In the quarterfinals, the Raider sophomore won a major decision, 13-0, over Sheldon Seymour of Troy. In the semifinals against Kaden Cassidy of Bishop McCort, he scored a key 3-point near-fall in the 3rd period en route to a 4-1 victory.

Bayless (33-4), 4th at the weight last season, will take on MountUnions Josh Boozel (33-6) in the finals. Boozel was a state qualifier in 2016.

Cole Matthews (138) is a man on a mission, but so is his finals opponent Max Murin of Central Columbia. Both were state champs in 2015, both lost to Brian Courtney of Athens last season at 126, where Matthews (43-1) was 3rd and Murin (39-0) 2nd. This will be the most anticipated finals bout.

In the semis, Matthews pinned Sammy Hepler of Tri-Valley in 37 seconds, while Murin pinned his man in 21 seconds. Earlier in the quarters, Matthews beat Noah Stamm of Milton, 9-3.

Vying for 3rd

Reynolds senior Gage Bayless had a great run through the consolations to get a medal. He beat Austin Mihalchik of Mount Pleasant, by fall in 3:38, then faced an old nemesis, Tye Vandall of Cambridge Springs whom he had never beat. Until now. Bayless win a 7-1 decision after a takedown and back-points led to the victory. Next up, he topped Tanner Ball ofPequea Valley, 3-1. This brought a rematch with John Rocco Kazalas of Quaker Valley, who defeated the Raider, 8-7, in the tourney first round. Bayless gained his revenge with a 7-3 victory.

Today, Bayless (33-9) will take on Brian Earlston (35-8) of Line Mountain.

Raider senior Gavin Wilkerson lost a heartbreaker in the semifinals that he thought he had won. Wilkerson was awarded a takedown at the buzzer on Northern Lehighs Ryan Farber for a 7-6 win. But the referees conferred and took away the takedown, giving Farber a 6-5 victory.

In my opinion, Gavin won that match, said Taylor. The head referee said he had the takedown, but somehow he let the mat judge convince him that he didnt.

In the quarterfinals, Wilkerson had advanced with a 12-1 victory over Seth Baney of Huntingdon. In the consolations, he faced Kyle Bennett of Montoursville and bounced back with a convincing 6-2 decision. Today hell take on Baney again.

Senior Joel Leise of Reynolds lost in the semis,10-3, to Dalton Group of Susquenita in a match much closer than the final score. Leise was trailing 5-3 late in the match and give up 5 points on a desperation move. In the quarters earlier, Leise beat Jared McGill of Chestnut Run, 8-5. Dropping to the consys, the Raider took on Matt Lewandowski of Mahanoy. Leise pinned his foe in 1:21. Today he faces a rematch with McGill.

Reynolds big man Cole Rickert suffered his first defeat of the season, falling in the semis to Dan Scheib, 7-3. Earlier in the quarters, Rickert topped Evan Sweesy of Freedom, 3-1. In the consys, Rickert tangled with Ian Minnich of Williams Valley and won 3-2

Vying for 5th

Slippery Rock junior Michael Doerflinger (138) won his quarterfinal bout, 4-3, over Alex Caldwell of Ligonier Valley, but bowed in the semis to Max Murin of Central Columbia by fall in 21 seconds. In the consys he faced Fraziers Thayne Lawrence, but lost a 5-2 decision. Today hell meet Alex Caldwell of Ligonier Valley, whom Doerflinger beat earlier, 4-3.

Greenville senior Blake Reynolds suffered his first loss of the season in the semis, bowing to Josiah Jones of Bishop McCort, 7-4. Jones was 2nd at this weight last season. Earlier in the quarters, Reynolds pinned Jakob Paul of Halifax in 45 seconds. In the consys, Reynolds, who placed 4th at 195 last year, forfeited to Max Mason of Jersey Shore. The Lock Haven-bound Trojans had battled injuries all year.

Vying for 7th

Reynolds sophomore Andrew Ischo (120) bowed in the quarterfinals, 11-3, to Josh Jones of Saucon Valley, then bounced back in the consys to edge Baily Wehr of Northwest Lehigh, 6-4. He then lost to Upper Dauphins Bronson Garber, 5th at 113 last year, by a 9-4 count. In the final today, Ischo (35-8) will meet Notre Dames Ryan McGuire (39-10).

Senior Chaise Hauck (145) finished 8th for the Raiders last season, so hell be shooting to finish one step higher on the medals stand today. Hauck lost in the quarterfinals, 4-2, to Todd Lane of Southern Columbia. In his first consy match, he defeated Jason Jones of Saucon Valley, 2-0. He then lost to Nathan Haubert of Palisades, 3-1.

Today Hauck(31-10) will meet a familiar foe, John Mott of Commodore Perry, who beat Hauck in district and region finals.

CPs Mott followed the same path as Hauck. In the quarters, he lost to South Parks Dallas Bulsack by fall in 4:32. He bounced back to beat Cameron Palmer of Boiling Springs, 6-2, then lost to Kody Komora of Freedom, 8-4.

Sharons Nick McClimans will finish out his senior year with a medal. McClimans (36-8) takes on Carl Harris whom he beat earlier, 4-3 today. He lost in the quarters Friday to Gaige Garcia of Southern Columbia, 5-2, but came back in the consys to beat Zach Cassidy of Harbor Creek, 5-3. The Tiger fell in his next bout to Matt Lewandowski of Mahanoy, 9-5.

Greenville sophomore Jacob McMaster dropped a 7-3 decision to Exree Loe of Greater Johnstown to fall to the 7th-round consy bout. Earlier, McMaster defeated Brady Herr of Newport, 12-5, then pinned Mike Wilcox of Wyalusing in 2:31. Today McMaster (24-5) will face Ivan Balavage (33-5) of Scranton Prep.

Eliminated

Round 3 consys

Greenvilles Brendan Calvin (182) opened the consolation rounds with a 4-3 win over Colton Drawbaugh of Trinity. But in the next round, the Trojan junior lost to Zach Zimmerman of Troy, 5-0.

Mercers Bobby Gregory (285) lost in the quarterfinals to Berlin-Brothersvalleys Toby Cahill, 13-1, to fall into the consolations. In his next match, he gave up a 3rd-period takedown in a 3-1defeat to Ian Minnich of Williams Valley. Gregory finished runner-up to Cole Rickert at section, district and region tournaments.

Eliminated

Round 2 consys

Reynolds Hunter Michaels (132) was tied at 2 in the 3rd period when he was pinned by Bentons Colton Babock. Michaels finished the season at 33-7, winning section, district and region titles.

Michael Biddle had the other goal late in the second period for Andover.
