In response to Mr. Miles opinion letter which appeared on September 12. I am familiar with Turkeys ethnic cleansingin 1922 (my mothers familyis from Aivali, Asia Minor) and my fathers town in Cyprus 1974 (Tumbou).However, America first.I love Greece. My children and grandchildren speak, read and write Greek. I think in Greek, but our country, America, comes first.That is what President Trump has been trying to do. The Democratsfrom day one (Schumer, Pelosi) said they would veto everything the president would propose. Maxine Waters saidto disrupt the lives of all Republicans go in their face, etc.The Democratsare ruining everything we stand for. My parents were Democrats.I, too, until I witnessed the disgracefulKavanaughhearings which was Feinsteins farce.Democrats are jealous because Hillary lost and Trump gets to do the things he promised. The Democrats espouse Communism. I saw firsthand Communism in Venezuela.Barefoot children begging for money to buy food.The mud houses on the side of the mountain. Alsoa close relatives grandfather was shot and killed by a Communist neighbor in the southern Peloponnese.Communism is reprehensible.

I feel religiousleaders should not influence voters one way or another. They should focus on the killing of full term babies. That should be on their conscience. Also we should put all the haters of American laws and traditions on a slow boat to China.

Covid-19 is not a disease of the skin. Despite this sick Presidents scurrilous attempts to trivialize and politicize itto blame the China virus on the radical leftthe novel coronavirus is both terrifying and terrorizing. Its not a conspiracy or theory or conspiracy theory. It is real.

It does not care if you are conservative or liberal. Or, for that matter, if your are a white supremacist.

It does not recognize national borders. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), far more of us (see below) have died of Covid-19 than Chinese (4,746 deaths) or Indians (72,049 deaths). Even allowing for possible under-reporting, its worth noting that China and India are the two most populous nations on the planet with a combined population of 2.7 billion. The U.S. has a fraction of the total population (330.4 million) and nearly three times more reported deaths.

It does not spare the rich and powerful. Not even the highest ranking officials in Washington. Most notably, the one who returned to the White House from Walter Reed Military Medical Center and immediately removed his mask. The one who tweeted:

Dont be afraid of Covid. Dont let it dominate your life. We have developed, under the Trump Administration, some really great drugs & knowledge. I feel better than I did 20 years ago!

Never mind that the very same Covid has infected nearly 36 million people globally, caused the deaths of 211,000 Americans, and has wrecked the lives of millions more in countless ways. Donald Trump who gets the best care taxpayers money can buy clearly doesnt give a damn about the health of the country or the American people.

When the leader of Chinas KMT Nationalist party, Chiang Kai-shek, sought to unify a deeply divided and debilitated China between the two world wars, his main adversaries were the Communists under Mao Zedong and Japan under an ultra-nationalist regime similar to dirigisme and fascism in Europe.

It was in this historical context that Chiang drew the now-famous distinction between a disease of the heart and one of the skin. What Chiang meant was that unlike the threat from Japan, Communism was internal. Like cancer, not like acne or eczema. The latter is a serious problem; the former is life-threatening.

Chiang wanted to establish a republic. He believed that Communism was antithetical to that aim. He was right, of course, as soon became clear when Mao emerged victorious after WWII and established a brutal and bizarre totalitarian state. Mass persecution and blood purges followed in short order. Then came calamitous state-directed campaignsthe Great Leap Forward (1958-1962) and the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976).

Every honest, functioning adult knows this pandemic is a deadly disease that can attack almost anything in the body with devastating consequences, says cardiologist Harlan Krumholz of Yale University. Its ferocity is breathtaking and humbling.

In severe cases, Covid-19 leaves its victims gasping for breath. Not infrequently, afflicted patients often quite suddenly develop a condition called acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Commonly, these patients end up on ventilators. Many die.

Chiang Kai-shek during the interwar years was the leader of a nation in turmoil and a society at war with itself. He lost the struggle for control of mainland China in 1949. The rest is historya tragic history of mindless mass executions, brutal repression, crushing press censorship, and self-destructive economic policies that left the nation in dire poverty. At the center of it all was a cult of personalitya ruthless ruler with a hideously outsized ego who would not listen to reason.

If that description sounds familiar, if it reminds the reader of an irrational captain at the helm of another ship of state sailing in troubled waters and in grave danger of capsizing, its not because history repeats itself. But at this perilous time in American history, it rhymes. And in so doing it rings out a clarion calla dire warningto all who are not deaf.

Its a supreme irony that President Trump has chosen to call Covid-19 the China virus. Hes right to view the PRC under Xi Jingping as a rival, to be critical of Beijings unfair tradepolicies and practices.

But China is a disease of the skin. Donald Trump is a disease of the heart.

The Athens Court of Appeals on Wednesday delivered a historic guilty verdict for the leaders and members of the neo-Nazi Golden Dawn, finding that they had run Golden Dawn as a criminal organization.

In a unanimous ruling, Greek justice ruled that Golden Dawn was a criminal organization "wearing the cloak of a political party," in accordance with the indictment in the case.

The court also found the defendant Golden Dawn member, Giorgos Roupakias, guilty of all charges for the murder of anti-fascist musician Pavlos Fyssas and another 15 defendants in the case guilty of acting as accomplices, while acquitting two due to reasonable doubt.

"The court, guided by the truth, as this was shown by a host of evidence, today penally condemned the murderers of Golden Dawn.

This guilty verdict should be accompanied by the exemplary punishment of the guilty with the highest possible sentences and of course, they must go to jail.

Of course, the connections and tentacles of the Nazis that were revealed during the trial make them even more dangerous.

No complacency is permitted. The most important thing is for the people to uproot the evil with the overthrow of the system that incubates the egg of the snake, Nazism and Fascism.

That is why the words of the poet are very timely: "You have to deeply understand fascism; it will not die alone, you must crush it".

KKE MEPs: Expel Golden Dawn from EU Parliament

The KKE Europarliament group has asked EU Parliament's President David Sassoli to initiate the necessary proceedings for the expulsion of the indicted Nazi MEP Yannis Lagos, as well as of the - ex Golden Dawn - MEP Athanasios Konstantinou.

The KKE MEPs ask that no possible substitute Golden Dawn members shall be permitted to join the EU Parliament. "Golden Dawn criminals belong in prison", said the KKE MEPs.

Lagos and Konstantinou, both elected as Golden Dawn MEPs in 2019 elections, are listed as "Independent".

Time is running out

I just read the article titled "Still no relief deal." I am very distressed that the last benefits expired on July 31 and there is still no relief in sight.

When I was much younger, there was a saying that half a loaf is better than none. Even though, as a newly converted Democrat, I'm disgusted by the mingy and mean-spirited Republicans led by Mitch McConnell, who are afraid to give "too much" to those who have nothing, I would encourage the Democrats to get anything they can out to those who are in desperate need, even if it means going back to the well later.

I understand that this is not the show of strength that Ms. Pelosi and the Democrats would prefer, but people need to be housed and fed, and time is running out.

On liberty and justice

The selection of judges should not be political and should be a nonpartisan process. Judges should not be influenced by political biases and appointed by elected politicians. To perform their constitutional duty, judges have to answer to the law and the Constitution--not to political pressure.

Depoliticizing the bench is as old as this nation. Alexander Hamilton said, "there is no liberty, if the power of judging be not separate from the legislative and executive powers." If judges had to depend on the executive or legislature to keep their jobs, Hamilton wrote, judges would have "too great a disposition to consult popularity" instead of consulting "the Constitution and the laws," and we could not expect the "inflexible and uniform adherence to the rights of the Constitution, and of individuals, which we perceive to be indispensable in the courts of justice."

Governing our nation and administering laws and justice is not a game to be influenced by bias, prejudice, and outside political forces. It should be based on fairness and legal justice. The Constitution and laws of this nation were set up to reduce bribery and corruption out of its political offices and judges. Our democracy and justice cannot survive should such standards be ignored. We need people and judges with a moral compass that desires justice. Until this is done we will never have liberty and justice for all.

We must have hope

The headline of an article in the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette last Wednesday morning read: "States face pressure to ban hairstyle prejudice." I woke up that morning after watching what I was hopeful would be a presidential debate the night before. I'm still waiting for a debate. Over 200,000 of my neighbors have died during the last six months from something called covid-19. People are marching in the streets, hopeful that their efforts will affect legislation for the good of the order.

With things in the condition they are these days, I often surprise myself that I'm yet hopeful. After living for 70 years, I've come to realize that faith breeds hope. Do you have hope? If so, I pray that neither of us ever loses it. If we ever do, heaven help us.

Socialism is not communism. People in my generation spent a large part of our lives fighting communism. We know what communism is, and it is not socialism. If you like your Social Security, Medicare, military, public schools and roads, fire and police departments, you are a socialist, not a communist. Communists want to destroy capitalism. Socialists do not want to destroy the goose that lays the golden egg.

Napoleon invaded Russia in 1812. Russian leaders have feared European aggression. They defeated both Napoleon and Hitler. Stalin created vassal states around Russia to protect himself against aggression. Putin is trying to do the same today, only now he has a like-minded, would-be dictator in the White House to help him. Fortunately, our fathers created a world order in 1945 to preserve freedom for everyone. Now that world order is under attack by the American president.

The United Nations charter was drafted in the United States and signed by the five permanent members on Oct. 24, 1945, to preserve peace and freedom in the world. The charter is a a treaty requiring all member states to respect and observe "human rights." Human rights were defined in the Declaration of Human Rights on Dec. 10, 1948. The nations of the world recognized in 1945 that when nations do not respect human rights, human beings will go to war to take what is rightfully theirs: freedom!

But what is freedom without food, water, and clean air? What is freedom if we have to live underground due to global warming? People will go to war to protect human rights. Look what is happening in Hong Kong and Belarus. If you want people to live peacefully, protect their human rights. Take them away, and there will be war.

Critical census work

Kudos to Kara Wilkins and all of the volunteers who participated in Arkansas Counts. They combed our "natural state" to make sure that all of our inhabitants were counted and included in the very important 2020 United States Census. This census will impact the federal dollars our state receives during the next decade.

Many thanks to all the volunteers who supported this critical task.
