In the final speech, he stressed that Germans and Czechs were part of the community of free friends.

"As the Leipzig revolution was a revolution of candles, a revolution of light and a revolution of hope, the Prague revolution was a revolution of keys that opened the road to future," Zeman said.

"I can assure you that when there were 750,000 demonstrators in Prague and each of them rang the keys, this weak, unique voice of my keys was pitched to such a volume that the Communist regime fell," he added.

"My German friends, you are one people. And you are one nation. But above all, we are all, thanks to God, members of the European Union," Zeman said.

"Members of the community of free friends," Zeman said in German, turning to the thousands of people gathered at the Festival of Lights in Leipzig.

Slovak President Andrej Kiska also stressed European freedom in his speech.

"Today it is us, the inhabitants of Central Europe, us who survived the whole period of darkness, it is us who should put up an effort at ensuring the continuation of democracy and freedom in Europe and in the whole world," Kiska said.

The speeches by the presidents closed the official part of the celebrations today.

The political exiles featured in a documentary that cannot be shown in public or distributed here should not be allowed to air their "self-serving accounts" of the fight against communism, said Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

Local film-maker Tan Pin Pin's To Singapore, With Love had to be seen in the historical context of the communist insurgency, an armed struggle for power that raged for 40 years and killed thousands, he pointed out.

He was commenting for the first time on the film that has been in the news since the Media Development Authority recently classified it "Not Allowed for All Ratings" because it was deemed to undermine national security.

Ms Tan has submitted the film - unchanged - to the independent Films Appeal Committee and said on Thursday she hoped the classification could be reviewed.
