Nine Durango High School students have qualified for SkillsUSA state competition in April.
The national program, supported by business and industry, offers training in areas as diverse as welding, photography, crime scene investigation, computer programming and cabinetry.
The regional competition was Friday at Durango High School, which hosted students from Bayfield, Pagosa Springs and Dolores. Local sponsors are Alpine Lumber, ProBuild and Kroegers True Value Hardware.
Three DHS students were double winners.
The DHS state qualifiers were Madison Hoven, first in advertising design and job interviewing; Justin Marcum, second in job interviewing; Vayle Townsend, first in welding; Zack Clements, second in welding; Mitch Guffey, first in architectural design; Jussin Johnson, first in motorcycle service; Patrick Cunnion, second in crime-scene investigation; Justin Marcum, second in crime-scene investigation; Clements, second in crime-scene investigation; Matt Shortle, second in computer programming; and Tony Vasquez, second in carpentry.
