Citizen involvement helps police: Get involved in the CPD citizen academy
One of the most important factors in crime prevention is citizen involvement. In the last several years, we have stressed community involvement, crime prevention and what to do if you become a victim of crime. We have met with many citizens who dont understand how our Police Department operates. Many are confused about different laws, our policies and our procedures. An informed and educated citizen often can prevent crime or lessen damage or loss as a victim of crime.
We take you behind the scenes in the Police Department and show you how your Police Department works on a daily basis. Our instructors and guest speakers show students topics such as crime scene investigation, narcotics, gangs, SWAT team, patrol procedures, and an overview of the criminal justice system. Throughout the 12-week program, students will have opportunities to participate in several hands-on training exercises. Classes meet on Tuesday evenings for approximately three hours.
Included in this program is a four-hour ride-along program with an on-duty police officer. You will be able to see the streets and some of the problems officers encounter on a daily basis.
The Conroe Police Department is taking applications for the upcoming class that will begin Feb. 17. Class size is limited to 30, so early registration is important. There is no cost for this program. Applicants must be at least 21 years old, residents of Montgomery County and have no felony records. This class is informative and interesting, but it is not an academy for employment purposes.
We hope this class will not only show you some of the latest technology and techniques used in law enforcement, but that it will help citizens understand that without their help, crime prevention and law enforcement always will remain an uphill battle.
In addition, a lot of your questions about law enforcement in general will be answered. Ive been associated with the Citizens Police Academy as a coordinator, instructor or volunteer since 1992. It is one of my favorite programs. You will see that the instructors have as much fun as the students.
We invite, encourage, even challenge, you to attend. It is unlike any other class you may have taken. Applications can be picked up in the front lobby of the Police Station, faxed to you or sent by email. If you have questions, call the Conroe Police Department Crime Prevention Unit at 936-522-3226 for more information.
