Democrat Jim Webb hires adviser to coordinate Iowa operations

Former Democratic Sen. Jim Webb, a potential rival of Hillary Clinton for the Democratic nomination in 2016, has hired a senior political adviser to coordinate his would-be campaign's operations in Iowa.

A Webb adviser confirmed to Fox News early Tuesday that Webb had tapped Rania Batrice for the role.

Batrice previously managed the congressional campaign for George Sinner in North Dakota and served as communications director for the North Dakota Democratic Party.

Webb, a former Secretary of the Navy under Ronald Reagan who represented Virginia in the Senate between 2007 and 2013, announced in November that he was forming an exploratory committee to evaluate a possible presidential run.

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is considered to be the clear front-runner for the Democratic nomination, though she has not formally declared her candidacy. Other possible candidates include Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, Vice President Joe Biden, and former Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley.

Fox News' Serafin Gomez contributed to this report.

Updated 11:00 a.m. |Highland Park Mayor Nancy Rotering announced a bid in Illinois 10th District Tuesday, putting Democrats on a likely primary collision course in a must-win seat for the party.

Rotering hopes to face GOP Rep. Robert Dold, a moderate Republican who won his second, non-consecutive term in this suburban Chicago-based district in 2014. Butsheislikely to face a primary against former Rep. Brad Schneider, the Democrat who lost to Dold in November.

Schneider moved closer to entering the contestthis month, after national Democrats brought him to Washington, D.C., to convince him to run.

In her announcement, Rotering seemed unmoved by the prospect of a primary.

Exploring this Congressional run proved that my background, experience and energy are what the residents of the 10th District want and need, Rotering said in a release. I am running because of the strong support I have received within and outside of the District.

Schneiders campaign was quick to release polling showing him with a decisive lead over Rotering in a primary.

The survey showed Schneider leading Rotering 56 percent to 12 percent among likely Democratic primary voters. Whats more, 64 percent of likely Democratic primary voters had a favorable view of Schneider. The poll, conducted by Democratic pollster Jill Normington, surveyed 430 likely Democratic primary votersovertwo days last week, and had a margin of error of 4.7 points.

Still, a primary could be problematic for Democrats.

Liberal Democrat election candidate resigns over 'lack of help' from party

First published in News Last updated Exclusive by Joe Willis, Regional Chief Reporter

THE Liberal Democrat candidate to replace William Hague as MP for Richmond has withdrawn from the contest accusing local party members of failing to back him.

Chris Foote-Wood said the Richmond Liberal Democrat Association had not provided "any practical help or support whatsoever", adding that he had been left to fight the election campaign on his own.

The 74-year-old said the only assistance he was given was the publication of an election address to be delivered to every house in the constituency.

However, he said the final straw came when senior party members decided to appoint someone from Leeds to write the message on his behalf.

Mr Foote-Wood, who has stood as a candidate for Westminster on eight previous occasions, has criticised three senior association officials who he accused of being behind the party's lack of support.

The candidate said association chair Caroline Seymour, as well as senior association members John Harris and Richard Good had made "distasteful and derogatory" remarks to him.

The candidate added: "I realised that the association was not capable of mounting a sustained election campaign and I was quite prepared to do most of the work myself, but I was not prepared to be treated the way I have - the association has done absolutely nothing.

"To find three senior members criticising me has been totally demoralising and I'm not going to put up with it - it's an impossible situation."

Mr Foote-Wood added: "They are arrogant people. They think I will do nothing for eight months, they can criticise me and I will dance to their tune - well I won't.
