Abhisit offers to take political break

He will reveal the details of his proposal, which he believes will bring the country out of political impasse, within the next few days, he wrote.

Democrat Party deputy leader Nipit Intharasombat said Thursday that his party leader, Abhisit Vejjajiva, has already made a sacrifice to try to get the country out of the political deadlock by offering to take a political break.

Nipit said if the Democrat wins the next election, Abhisit will not get the post of prime minister or if the Democrat loses, Abhisit will not become the opposition leader because he will not contest the next election.

"This is not a last card but it's a sacrifice and a retreat for the country to move on," Nipit said.

He added that Abhisit is still the Democrat leader because he has not resigned from the party's position.

But Pheu Thai deputy spokesman Anusorn Eamsa-ard regarded the offer to skip the election as the Democrat's plan to pressure the Pheu Thai to skip the election as well.

Anusorn alleged that Abhisit was trying to find an excuse not to contest the next poll and when he made the offer, the Pheu Thai would come under pressure to sacrifice as well.

Illinois Democrat, a former state representative, charged with child porn possession

An Illinois Democrat who resigned a month ago as a state representative and who once co-sponsored two bills to crack down on child pornography offenders has now himself been charged with possession of child porn.

Keith Farnham, a Democrat from Elgin, is accused of using his government and personal computers to trade hundreds of photographs of minors engaged in sexual acts, or posed in sexually explicit positions, Raw Story reported.

One of the photographs reportedly showed a 6-month-old baby girl in a sexual situation, federal authorities said, the media site reported. Another reportedly showed a girl, about age 7, in a compromising, sexual situation.

Mr. Farnham has been accused also of bragging at an online site about sexually molesting a girl, age 6, Raw Story reported.

He allegedly wrote in an online chat in November: 12 is about as old as i can handle. I love them at 6 7 8. He allegedly wrote in another online chat, Raw Story reported: [I wish I] had access to all the vids and pics ever made.

Federal agents issued a warrant in mid-March for Mr. Farhhams office and home. Shortly after, the lawmaker resigned from office, saying he was going to start medical treatments for bladder cancer and pulmonary fibrosis, Raw Story reported.

Mr. Farnham, if convicted, could face 10 years behind bars. Hes set to make his first appearance in court on Wednesday.

Democrat vs. Democrat in the charter school debate in California

A one-party state like California may be tailor made to highlight sharp policy differences within the party. In the race of superintendent of education, an advocate of school reform including charters, local control and tempering union influence is squaring off against a more traditional Democrat supported by teachers' unions.

The race pits two well-funded Democrats against each other, with former charter school executive Michael Tuck challenging incumbent Tom Torlakson, a former teacher.

Tuck said in an interview with Reuters that he supports teacher unions but thinks they have "too big a seat at the table."

"He opposes rules that require teachers with the least seniority to be the first fired during layoffs, and is against granting teachers tenure after just two years on the job," Reuters reported.

"Policy experts in California say that increasingly, Democrats are supporting elements of the reform agenda," Reuters noted. "At the national level, the call to tie teacher evaluations to students' performance on standardized tests has been championed by the Democratic Obama administration, as well as leading Republicans."

The battle in California thus reflects a larger national battle pitting the Obama administration as a strong supporter of both charter schools and rigorous testing, both positions that pit him against teachers' unions.

In "Dreams of My Father," Obama offered an early signal that he would be an iconoclast on education, when he wrote of "annual budget shortfalls in the hundreds of millions; shortages of textbooks and toilet paper; a teachers union that went on strike at least once every two years; a bloated bureaucracy and an indifferent state Legislature."
