Weatherford Democrat Editor David May has been named general manager-editor for the Mineral Wells Index.

May, a veteran newspaper executive, worked 10- years as editor of the Index before becoming the Democrat's editor in December 2012.

He replaces publisher Mel Rhodes, whose retirement begins today.

I am excited about my return to Mineral Wells and my new, expanded role, said May. There are new challenges ahead of me but I am confident we can move the Index forward.

Jeff Smith, publisher of the Lone Star News Group that includes the Index and the Democrat, said he was pleased to see May return to the community and the paper he served at for more than a decade. He cited Mays 25 years in the newspaper business as evidence of his knowledge of the industry.

We believe David May will have a very positive impact on the Index and Mineral Wells, said Smith. He knows the community and the people and where we need to go.

May spent his early journalism career as a reporter for the New Braunfels Herald-Zeitung, The Paris, Texas, News and the Gastonia, N.C., Gazette. He later worked as an editorial executive at the Plano Star-Courier and The Marshall News Messenger as well as the Index and Democrat.

"I appreciate the support I received and many new friendships made in my time at the Democrat," said May. "We made some positive strides during my time here and the paper has a strong and bright future."

Democrat top fundraiser in attorney general race

Editors Note Corrects Duran's fundraising to reflect amended report filed by candidate.

By BARRY MASSEY Associated Press

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) _ Democrat Hector Balderas has opened up a large fundraising advantage in the race for attorney general, according to the latest campaign-finance disclosures.

Balderas collected about $241,099 in cash contributions and in-kind donations of goods and services during the past six months. Republican Susan Riedel raised $34,263.

Balderas, a two-term state auditor, reported cash-on-hand of $632,031 as of last week. Riedel had a balance of $21,649 in her campaign account.

Riedel is a former prosecutor and judge from Las Cruces, and she was chief deputy district attorney in the 3rd Judicial District when Gov. Susana Martinez served as district attorney.

Monday was the deadline for political committees and candidates to file reports showing fundraising from October through early April.

There's no incumbent in the attorney general's race because Democrat Gary King is term-limited and running for governor.

Car dealers and others in the automotive industry contributed $46,200 to Balderas. Title loan and payday lending companies and a lending trade group contributed $11,200.

The Republican State Leadership Committee, a national GOP group, provided in-kind contributions of $8,000 to Riedel and Las Cruces retiree Robert Reich gave $10,400, which is the maximum amount allowed under state law for a primary and general election.
