Spring Break is right around the corner, and Ive got some great ideas to make it the best Spring Break yet without breaking the bank. How about some fun destinations practically in your own backyard?
First, some great getaways in the Texas Hill Country. Wineries are an obvious choice. There are some wonderful ones to choose from like the many vineyards scattered along US 290. Becker Vineyards (http://goodtaste.tv/2009/06/texas-wine-experience/) and Grape Creek (http://goodtaste.tv/2011/07/leave-your-worries-on-the-road-at-grape-creek-vineyards/) are just a couple of the highlights there as well as the new Mesina Hof tasting room, a second location for those folks whose flagship winery is in Bryan/College Station. These wineries offer beautiful tasting rooms, lots of wine choices and great scenery.
If you want to head further west to the beautiful rolling hills in Comfort, be sure to check out Camp Verde. Its a lovely historical area that just happens to have great food, shopping and scenery! Its the site where camels were once imported to Texas as part of an experiment with our federal government. Jefferson Davis, the US Secretary of War, spearheaded the project starting in 1856.
This spot has a fascinating history and still houses the original US Post Office and General Store that was built there 150 years ago. Now, its a great place to have lunch, shop and just enjoy the beautiful scenery along the river.
Camp Verde has a wonderful restaurant I suggest the turkey sandwich. Its served hot with the most delicious cranberry/jalapeno chutney. Ive got more information on Camp Verde on my website Goodtaste.tv. (http://goodtaste.tv/2012/02/cool-out-camp-at-camp-verde/)
While youre in the Comfort area, be sure to check out the Bending Branch Winery (http://goodtaste.tv/2011/05/new-texas-winery-produces-healthiest-red-wine/) known for its Tannat wines that are said to be the healthiest wines in the world. And if youre looking for a great place to stay, the Riven Rock Ranch (http://goodtaste.tv/2011/08/romance-abound-at-riven-rock-ranch/) is spectacular! Plus, their restaurant the Terrace Grill is not to be missed.
Another destination not to miss is the quaint town of Boerne. Fun shopping at Las Finezas (http://goodtaste.tv/2012/02/elevate-your-entertainment-with-las-finezas/ and Epicure http://goodtaste.tv/2012/02/chalk-full-of-chocolate-in-the-hill-country/.) I like The Alley too! Also, a cool wine bar is right on Main Street the Boerne Wine Company. For lunch or dinner, The Creek (http://goodtaste.tv/the-creek-restaurant/) is not to be missed. The food is top notch and the view along the river is beautiful!
If youre headed out towards the lake and historic Gruene Texas, be sure to check out the Texas Grapevine, a cute little wine bar where you can try a huge variety of Texas wines and find some great souvenirs (http://goodtaste.tv/2011/10/taste-it-through-the-grapevine/). And of course, youll want to eat in historic Gruene the Gristmill is beautiful this time of year and features premium wines at incredibly low prices.
Ive got many more ideas plus some great spring recipes for you to try AND fun spring time wines on my website at Goodtaste.tv. While youre there be sure to sign up for my newsletter http://goodtaste.tv/newsletter.
