Elon Musk dominated the spotlight yesterday: Tesla shares sank, SpaceX exploded and Musk threatened a lawsuit over Microsoft's use of Twitter.

For all of Elon Musk's idiosyncrasies that frequently put him in the spotlight (and lawsuits with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, for that matter), it's hard to deny his business acumen.

Yes, Tesla shares plummeted Thursday. The figure was so bad that it's the stock's steepest fall since July 24, 2019, according to data from Bespoke Investment Group.

But recall how Tesla, not so long ago in December last year, had its "worst month, quarter and year on record," to quote the article's headline. It sank to a 52-week low of $101.81 on Jan. 6 this year. Yet the share managed to double its price to close above $200 in less than a month after that.

Of course, Tesla isn't doing so hot now, but my point is it's important to take a long-term view of the company. Indeed, Cathie Wood has given it a staggering 1,127% upside from its price on Thursday, agreeing with Musk's emphasis on sales volume over profit margins. Telsa will play a huge role and benefit from a future self-driving revolution, Wood believes, calling it "one of the most important investment opportunities of our lifetimes."

Musk is, again, at the frontier of the future with SpaceX, his private spacecraft company. Admittedly, Starship exploded after taking off. But such occurrences are part and parcel of spaceflight testing. NASA Chief Bill Nelson even congratulated SpaceX for its flight attempt despite the explosion or what SpaceX is calling a "rapid unscheduled disassembly."

Which might be a good summary of Twitter, Musk's most contentious company but investors needn't worry about it since Musk has taken it private, anyway.

Elsewhere in markets, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.33%, the S&P 500 lost 0.6% and the Nasdaq Composite sank 0.8%, dragged down by losses in technology stocks, such as Nvidia's 2.96% fall and Meta's 1.22% slide. Investors grew increasingly concerned about shrinking margins despite companies beating revenue expectations. But the real test will come next week when big tech firms report, said Art Hogan, chief market strategist at B. Riley Financial.

"If we see a lot of degradation over the course of next week because of guidance," he said, "that might cause a multiple contraction and we might see some of the S&P 500 sell off."

CNBC Daily Open: Its all about Elon Musk - CNBC

It seems Elon Musk wants to join the artificial intelligence arms race.

"I'm going to start something which I call TruthGPT," Musk told Fox News' "Tucker Carlson Tonight" on Monday, adding that he'd want his AI chatbot to be a "maximum truth-seeking AI that tries to understand the nature of the universe."

The timing of Musk's announcement which, to be clear, was not an actual product unveiling is notable, given that just three weeks ago, the Tesla and Twitter CEO signed an open letter calling for a six-month pause on all work on AI systems more powerful than OpenAI's ChatGPT-4.

Musk spoke about the dangers of rapid AI development before pitching his own version, alleging that chatbots like ChatGPT and Google's Bard are being trained to be "politically correct." He didn't provide evidence for those claims, or detail exactly what a "truth-seeking AI" might entail.

"A path to AI dystopia is to train AI to be deceptive," Musk said. "AI is more dangerous than, say, mismanaged aircraft design or production maintenance or bad car production ... [It] has the potential of civilization destruction."

Broadly speaking, that sentiment echoes a recent chorus of worries from tech luminaries and CEOs, including from billionaire investor Mark Cuban and Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak. Even Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai has weighed in, noting that Bard can "hallucinate" answers to human prompts writing responses that sound plausible, but are factually inaccurate.

"It could cause harm," Pichai told CBS News' "60 Minutes" on Sunday.

One of Musk's specific criticisms of OpenAI which he co-founded in 2015, and helped fund before leaving its board three years later centers around the organization's restructure from nonprofit to "capped-profit" in 2019, meant to help the company accept external funding.

That opened the door to a partnership with Microsoft, which helped train ChatGPT-4, OpenAI announced earlier this year. For-profit status could influence the ethics behind an AI program's development, Musk said on Monday.

Twitter which intends to pursue generative AI, Musk told the BBC last week is a for-profit company. So is X.AI, a new startup Musk quietly incorporated in Nevada last month.

Musk didn't immediately respond to CNBC Make It's request for comment. He admitted on Monday that he's "very late" to the chatbot race, but said he's still motivated to try due to concerns over the OpenAI-Microsoft partnership and Google dominating the market.

His timeline remains unclear, particularly considering his history of starting and then abandoning or indefinitely pausing ambitious projects, like The Boring Company's high-speed tunnels between major U.S. cities or Neuralink's computerized brain implants.

"I'm definitely starting late, but I will try to create a third option," Musk said. "This might be the best path to safety, in that an AI that cares about understanding the universe is unlikely to annihilate humans, because we are an interesting part of the universe."

Elon Musk will appear on Real Time with Bill Maher next Friday, April 28, at 10 p.m. ET. Maher broke the news recently and mentioned bringing up Mars to Elon Musk.

And I want to talk to him. Ive never been on that page of why we should go to Mars, said Maher. I mean, however bad we ruin the Earth, it can not be worse than a place that has no air, is 200 degrees below zero, and [is] a long way away, and has 6-month dust storms.

Mahers questions about Mars will be timely, given that Elon Musks SpaceX recently completedStarships first successful flight test. Starship is an integral part of Musks goals.

However, traveling to and populating Mars might not equate to doom and gloom for Earth. Mars doesnt seem to be an escape plan for humans.

For Musk, Mars is the first step to an exciting future for humans. The billionaire wants a multiplanetary existence for humans, andthe Red Planet is only the first step.

You want to wake up in the morning and think the future is going to be great and thats what being a spacefaring civilization is all about. Its about believing in the future and thinking that the future will be better than the past. And I cant think of anything more exciting than going out there and being among the stars, said Elon Musk.

SpaceX estimates that it would take Starship 6 months to get to Mars. The space company lists several reasons Mars is the first planet on its travel plans. First, the Red Planet has decent sunlight since it is relatively as close to the Sun as Earth. SpaceX states that it could warm up Mars. And since the planet contains CO2, nitrogen, and other elements for plant life. Another plus for the Red Planet is that the span of its day is similar to Earths, meaning adjusting might be easier for humans in terms of time.

Hearing Musks reply to Mahers questions about Mars on Friday would be interesting. With Starships first test complete, its only a matter of time before the first human lands on Mars.

The Oakland As will soon become the Las Vegas As.

However, a stadium will need to first be built.

Justin Walker and Chris Maathuis of ktla.com report that the As could soon have a temporary home in Southern Nevada ahead of their billion-dollar stadium west of the Las Vegas Strip.

We have an agreement with the Aviators to play at their stadium temporarily,As president Dave Kaval told KTLA.

The Aviators are the Tripe-A affiliates of the As that play in Summerlin, Were really deferring to Major League Baseball to kind of help us make that decision.

The As yet-to-come stadium will also feature one, perhaps two Hyperloop stops courtesy of Elon Musks company.

We spoke to Steve Davis at The Boring Company, Kaval said. And yes, a stop is in our future. Maybe two.

The Hyperloop is a proposed high-speed transportation system for both public and goods transport, according to Wikipedia.

Elon Musk picked up the idea to describe a modern project based on the vactrain concept.

It features long, pressurized tubes in which single cars travel on magnetic rails at high speeds. Though it works in theory, it has yet to be made into a reality on the scale that Musk and The Boring Company have promised.

Only time will tell how this deal works out for the As.

You know, because hes totally edgy and funny.

Well, that decision alone has caused numerous celebrities and public figures to say fuck this and leave the platform all together, since no more verification means people can easily create impostor accounts since it now only costs $8 a month to do that. And while a lot of it is from actors and other celebrities, ex-Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy said hes done for good since hes not going to subscribe to Twitter Blue just for a check mark.

With Twitter now stripping everybody of them and enabling anybody to simply buy one and pretend to be anybody with no verification, I think its time to bounce from here to avoid any possible confusion or mistaken identity. I will still be using my Instagram and Facebook with daily posts and content so please follow me over there where you can be certain it is actually me posting.

Naturally, this resulted in people coming out of the woodwork to defend boy genius Musk or cry about some political attack that Portnoy was leveling (even though he wasnt). As the vitriol came pouring in, Portnoy pointed to those comments as another reason why he was leaving the platform.

Wow some of these comments (even attacks) are pretty incredible!! Almost comical. I assumed it was obvious I could care less about paying $8 (or however much) for a Blue Check its not even about me having one or not its more about the fact that any 13 yr [old] kid with 18 followers can simply buy one!! It defeats the entire purpose of what verified accounts once meant.

And honestly, reading some of these tweets is another reason Im just not that into this place anymore. Im not making any sort of political statement its just personal taste. Just too toxic for me.

I figured I at least owed my followers a heads up that I was bailing from here but will still be on FB & IG rather than just ghosting everyone! Anyways, if the policies here ever change a bit who knows, maybe Ill come back someday. Just letting you know I wont be posting any updates here for now.

Support of Twitter Blue has been lackluster to say the least. Not only has Musk been offering money of the celebrity icons, even though they may not want them at all, but its also rumored that theyve sold maybe a few dozen subscriptions since its launch, which is abysmal for a massive multinational corporation.
