Erdogan Warns that Israel will come for Turkish Territory after Taking Gaza – Informed Comment

While Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoan asserts that Hamas is defending Turkey, opposition voices within the country challenge this narrative.

Istanbul (Special to Informed Comment) -On May 15, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoan claimed that Israel will set eyes on Turkish territory after Gaza.

Erdoan made these remarks during his ruling Justice and Development Partys (AKP) parliamentary group meeting, stating: Dont think that Israel will stop in Gaza. Dont think that Ramallah will be safe. If this aggressive state, this terror state, is not stopped, sooner or later they will set their eyes on Anatolia with the delusion of promised lands.

He added, Israel is not only attacking Palestinians in Gaza. They are attacking us. Hamas is defending the front lines of Anatolia in Gaza.

In his address, Erdoan referred to Anatolia, the vast peninsula in Western Asia that largely encompasses modern-day Turkey.

The Times of Israel commented, questioning Erdoans assertions: Israel has never claimed any part of Turkey belongs to it, and it is unclear what Erdogan is basing his claims on.

This isnt the first instance of Erdoan suggesting Israeli intentions to invade Turkey. In November 2023, he remarked, Israel is testing our patience with threats of nuclear weapon use, fueled by delusions of promised lands that include our countrys territories.

Concepts such as promised lands or Greater Israel have been used by various political parties in Turkey, including the AKP. These political notions suggest that Israel has secret plans to expand its territory far beyond its current borders. This theory often claims that Israel, driven by historical, religious, and strategic motivations, aims to annex large parts of the Middle East, including significant portions of Lebanon, Jordan, Syria, Iraq, Egypt, and Turkey.

According to a survey by MetroPOLL, 34.5% of Turkish citizens surveyed want Turkey to stay neutral in the Hamas-Israel conflict, 26.4% want Turkey to act as a mediator between the two sides, 18.1% want Turkey to support the Palestinians but to remain distant from Hamas, 11.3% want it to support Hamas, and 3% want it to support Israel.

Prominent journalist Fatih Altayl criticized Erdoans statements on his YouTube channel and pointed out inconsistencies. He questioned why, during Erdoans mentor Necmettin Erbakans tenure, projects involving tank and F-4 fighter jet modernizations were given to Israel if Turkey perceived a threat of Israeli aggression. Altayl also highlighted past military cooperation, such as Israeli Air Force pilots training at Turkeys Konya Air Base, suggesting Turkey wouldnt engage in such partnerships if it perceived a genuine risk from Israel.

Erdoan compares Hamas to Kuv-yi Milliye

In his speech, Erdoan also criticized those who were uncomfortable with his comparison of Hamas to Kuv-yi Milliye, stating: Those who label Hamas as a terrorist organization today would have called Kuv-yi Milliye the same a hundred years ago.

Kuv-yi Milliye was a Turkish nationalist militia during the Turkish War of Independence (1919-1923). Formed in response to the occupation and partitioning of the Ottoman Empire by Allied forces following World War I, Kuv-yi Milliye was composed of various local resistance groups and irregular fighters.

Kuv-yi Milliye was not a formal army but rather a loosely organized collection of local militias. Mustafa Kemal Atatrk, the leader of the Turkish National Movement, integrated the Kuvayi Milliye into the newly formed regular army in 1921.

Erdoan repeatedly likened Hamas to the Kuv-yi Milliye. Besides Hamas, Erdoan previously likened the Free Syrian Army (FSA) to the Kuv-yi Milliye in 2018.

This analogy was harshly criticized by the opposition, as the main opposition Republican Peoples Party (CHP) rejected such a similarity between the two organizations. CHP spokesperson Deniz Ycel said, Have you ever heard of Kuv-yi Milliye killing civilians? Defending Anatolia is not Hamas concern as long as we are here.

rsan ymen, a columnist for the secularist opposition Cumhuriyet, said such comparisons are completely contrary to historical facts and realities, and they constitute an insult to Kuv-yi Milliye and Atatrk because Kuv-yi Milliye adopted secularism as an ideology while Hamas is an Islamist organization.

How is Hamas perceived in Turkey?

The debate surrounding the comparison between the Kuv-yi Milliye and Hamas is mainly based on how Hamas is perceived by different political groups in Turkey. Turkey does not designate Hamas as a terrorist organization, in contrast to many Western countries.

Hamas is generally perceived positively by those with Islamist or conservative leanings. These groups often view Hamas as a resistance movement. President Erdoan labeled Hamas as a group of freedom fighters and mujahideen who are striving to protect their lands and their citizens.

Meanwhile, Turkeys secular opposition tends to criticize Hamas and instead praise leftist Palestinian organizations. Istanbuls opposition mayor Ekrem mamolu and CHP leader zgr zel labeled Hamas as a terrorist organization.

Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, numerous Turkish leftists, including notable figures like Deniz Gezmi, Yusuf Aslan, and Hseyin nan, joined armed Palestinian organizations. This is the reason why the main opposition party CHP tends to mention the legacy of Deniz Gezmi while expressing solidarity with Palestine.

Public opinion in Turkey is overwhelmingly supportive of the Palestinian cause. This support is influenced by a combination of political, religious, and humanitarian reasons. However, there are different views within the country, and some segments of the population and political opposition are more critical of Hamas, its armed wing Al-Qassam Brigades, and their methods.

Erdogan says rogue state of Israel will target Anatolia with its delusions of promised land – Middle East Monitor

Israeli Defence Minister Moshe Yaalon accused Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas of being responsible for the assassination attempt of American-Israeli Rabbi Yehuda Glick. A series of similar statements were issued by a number of Israeli officials in regards to the escalating conflict in the region.

In a statement directed towards at Abbas, Yaalon said: Mahmoud Abbas is known for spreading a series of false allegations and accusations regarding the Jewish peoples right to their land and their right to pray in Al-Aqsa courtyard, and this is the result of his statements.

The Israeli Minister of Tourism Uzi Landau was more severe in his comments when he said: Our main enemies are Mahmoud Abbas, Arab terrorism and Hamas. Abbas is trying to use the events in Jerusalem to his political benefit and he uses them to achieve his political terrorism.

On Facebook, the Israeli Ministry of Public Security wrote: The Israeli police will not allow terrorism to raise its head in Jerusalem and they will reach each and every terrorist.

Miri Regev, the head of the Interior Committee in the Knesset, called upon security forces to deploy a permanent group of guards that will prevent Palestinians from protesting Jewish entry into Al-Aqsa and its surrounding courtyard.

A report on the Israeli radio attributed the closure of the Aqsa mosque to the attacks directed at Jews and the Palestinian response of throwing stones and chanting slogans against Jewish entry into Al-Aqsa Mosque. As a result of this response, Israeli officials trapped Palestinian Muslims inside the mosques and responded by saying: We would not have had to treat Palestinians in this way if the situation did not escalate to this stage.

Deputy Minister in the Prime Ministers Office Ofir Akunis called for the demolition of Palestinian martyr Moataz Hijazis house and accused the minister of public security of being lax when dealing with the events in Jerusalem.

Erdogan claims Israel will seek to occupy parts of Turkey if it defeats Hamas – The Times of Israel

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan claims that Israel will set its sights on Turkey if it succeeds in defeating the Hamas terror group in the Gaza Strip.

Erdogan has cut trade ties with Israel, maintained close ties with Hamas, and repeatedly lambasted Israel and its Nazi leaders since the war was sparked by the terror groups massacre on October 7.

He has voiced support for Hamas, which is classed as a terrorist organization by Israel, the United States and the European Union, among others.

Do not think that Israel will stop in Gaza, Erdogan tells his party lawmakers in the parliament in the capital Ankara.

Unless its stopped this rogue and terrorist state will set its sights on Anatolia sooner or later, he claims, referring to the large Turkish peninsula also called Asia Minor that comprises more than half of Turkeys territory.

We will continue to stand by Hamas, which fights for the independence of its own land and which defends Anatolia, adds Erdogan.

Israel has never claimed any part of Turkey belongs to it, and it is unclear what Erdogan is basing his claims on.

Eurovision Is a Threat to the Traditional Family: Erdogan – Newser

Turkey's president took a swipe at the Eurovision Song Contest on Monday, accusing the annual event of allegedly encouraging "gender neutralization" and threatening the traditional family, the AP reports. It was an apparent reference to Swiss singer Nemo who won the 68th Eurovision Song Contest earlier this month with "The Code," an operatic pop-rap ode to the singer's journey toward embracing a nongender identity. The 24-year-old singer became the first nonbinary winner of the contest that has long been embraced as a safe haven by the LGBTQ community.

In a speech following a Cabinet meeting, Recep Tayyip Erdogan described participants at the contest as the "Trojan horses of social corruption" and said his government was right to keep Turkey out of the pan-European pop competition since 2012. "At such events, it has become impossible to meet a normal person," claimed Erdogan, whose ruling Justice and Development Party finds its roots in Turkey's Islamic movement and whose government has grown less tolerant of LGBTQ rights in recent years. "We understand better how we made the right decision by keeping Turkey out of this disgraceful competition for the past 12 years," he said. (A contestant was dramatically expelled from this year's competition hours before the finale.)
