Attorney General Holder Jokes Republicans Have 'A New Fondness For Me'

Attorney General Eric Holder joked Wednesday that given nearly six months of Senate delays in confirming his successor at the Justice Department, "it's almost as if the Republicans in Congress have discovered a new fondness for me."

"I'm feeling love there that I haven't felt for some time. And where was all this affection the last six years?" the attorney general asked, to laughter, in brief remarks at the Center for American Progress in Washington.

Holder has endured a rocky relationship with lawmakers during his tenure. In 2012, he became first attorney general to be held in contempt by the GOP-controlled House of Representatives over his refusal to turn over documents in the 'Fast and Furious' gun-trafficking scandal.

But even though he announced his intention to resign in September 2014, Senate leaders have slow-walked the confirmation process for his would-be replacement, Brooklyn U.S. Attorney Loretta Lynch.

The White House this week said Lynch, who had twice been confirmed to other top law enforcement posts with no negative votes, had waited 130 days for the full Senate to take action on her nomination to be the country's chief law enforcement officer longer than the previous five attorney general nominees, combined.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., has said he will work to move ahead with a human trafficking bill before scheduling a floor vote for Lynch. Since the Senate next week may consider budget issues, and then take a two-week break, action on the attorney general nomination may wait until mid-April. If she's approved, Lynch would be the first African-American woman to run the Justice Department. Lynch herself is relatively non-controversial, but she's suffered in part because of conservative displeasure about President Obama's executive action on immigration.

Sen. Richard Durbin, a high ranking Illinois Democrat, took to the Senate floor Wednesday morning under a poster of Loretta Lynch to complain that "no one laid a glove on her" during her eight-hour-long hearing in the Senate Judiciary Committee. Durbin said "there's no good reason" for the lengthy delays and said she's been "asked to sit in the back of the bus when it comes to the Senate calendar."

Through spokesman Brian Fallon, Holder reiterated his commitment to stay in office until the Senate moves on his successor. "In case it's lost on GOP, Holder is staying til Lynch confirmed. The longer Senate delays, the longer he is AG," Fallon tweeted.

Dick Cheney: Obama, Eric Holder playing the 'race card'

Former Vice President Dick Cheney says President Obama and Eric Holder are playing the race card in suggesting that race is a factor in some of the criticism they receive.

I think theyre playing the race card, in my view, Mr. Cheney said in an interview published by Playboy when asked if theres any truth to the suggestion that racism is a factor in criticism of them. Certainly we havent given up nor should we give up the right to criticize an administration and public officials.

To say that we criticize, or that I criticize, Barack Obama or Eric Holder because of race, I just think its obviously not true, he said. My view of it is the criticism is merited because of performance or lack of performance, because of incompetence. It hasnt got anything to do with race.

In a recent interview with Politico, Mr. Holder said he felt some of his struggles with Republicans in Congress could have been driven at least in part by race.

There have been times when I thought thats at least a piece of it, Mr. Holder said, adding that I think that the primary motivator has probably been political in nature [but] you cant let it deflect you from your eyes on the prize.

Mr. Obama has likewise tried to downplay race as a factor in criticism of him, though he has acknowledged it could be a factor for some people.

Are there people out there who dont like me because of race? Im sure there are, Mr. Obama told CNN in 2009, adding: Thats not the overriding issue here.

Mr. Cheney also said in the interview that he looks at Mr. Obama and sees the worst president in my lifetime, without question and thats saying something.

I used to have significant criticism of Jimmy Carter, but compared to Barack Obama and the damage he is doing to the nation its a tragedy, a real tragedy, and we are going to pay a hell of a price just trying to dig out from under his presidency, he said.

Thousands pay tribute to Deputy U.S. Marshal Josie Wells in emotional homegoing service

JACKSON COUNTY, MS (WLOX) -

He had a passion to protect and serve people in life and he died doing what he loved. Tuesday, a funeral service was held in Jackson County for 27-year-old Deputy U.S. Marshal Josie Wells. He was killed in the line of duty in Louisiana last week.

People from across the United States came to Wade Baptist Church to say their final goodbyes to a hometown hero. Wells grew up in a small community and went on to do big things, but never forgot where he came from.

"He was a man of dedication, of faith, a great love, and compassion," Director of the U.S. Marshals Stacia Hylton said.

"The love Josie Wells had for helping those in need was his calling," one family friend said.

"Josie will forever be in our hearts and we will forever be reminded of him. He has paid the ultimate price," said Wells' colleague.

The young deputy marshal had always dreamed of being in law enforcement, just like his father. He was living his dream until last week when he was shot and killed while serving a warrant to a double murder suspect.

"He knew well the risk involved in his work, but he did not hesitate to put his own life on the line in order to protect the country he loved," said U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder.

The nation's top law enforcement official was among the dignitaries who traveled to South Mississippi to attend Wells' funeral. As Holder stood over the flagged draped casket, he shared condolences from President and First Lady Obama. He also took time to praise the four year veteran for wearing the badge proudly.

"Remember this true American hero not for how he lost his life, but for how he lived it-with faith, with compassion, and with the joy that only those who truly give, truly give, can ever really experience. This was a good and decent man-an example to us all," said Holder.
