OAKLAND (CBS/AP) Attorney General Eric Holder will be in Oakland to talk about law enforcement and community relations.

Holder will meet with area police officers and community activists Thursday in a city that experienced a series of demonstrations against police abuse.

The U.S. Department of Justice declined to release the name of the attendees.

Oakland is the sixth and last city Holder will visit since President Obama asked him to organize roundtable discussions about police and community relations. The meetings were set up in response to violent protests that sprang up across the country after police shot to death unarmed black men in Ferguson, Missouri and New York.

Holder has held meetings in Atlanta, Philadelphia, Chicago, Cleveland, Ohio and Memphis Tennessee.

Holder announced in September his plan to resign.

Rand Paul Says He Will Vote Against Loretta Lynch Being Confirmed As Attorney General

Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul will oppose the confirmation of Loretta Lynch, President Obama's nominee to replace Eric Holder as attorney general, the Republican said Wednesday, citing her support for Obama's executive action on immigration and civil liberties issues as reasons for his stance.

In a statement issued to Politico, Paul wrote: Mrs. Lynch has a track-record of violating the individual freedoms granted to us by our Constitution. She considers civil asset forfeiture to be a useful tool, while I consider it to be an infringement on the Fifth Amendment.

Mrs. Lynch also supports President Obamas calls for executive amnesty, which I vehemently oppose. The attorney general must operate independent of politics, independent of the president and under the direction of the Constitution. I cannot support a nominee, like Mrs. Lynch, who rides roughshod on our Constitutional rights.

Though Paul does not sit on the highly influential Senate Judiciary Committee, some Republican senators who do have already indicated that they will not support Lynch.

Sen. John Cornyn of Texas told supporters on a call Wednesday that he would vote against Lynch's confirmation, saying that while Lynch had an impressive record, he felt "she will become the chief advocate for the president's policies as attorney general, and her testimony expressing support for the president's unconstitutional executive action ... make it impossible for me to vote for her nomination," CBS News reported.

In addition to Cornyn, Republican committee members Sen. Jeff Sessions of Alabama and Sen. David Vitter of Louisiana have also voiced their intentions to vote against Lynch.

Lynch, who serves as the U.S. attorney in Brooklyn, New York, would be the first black woman to hold the post of attorney general if her nomination is confirmed. But despite the opposition of many republicans, Lynch is expected to be confirmed to the post.

Republicans who support Lynch do so for a variety of reasons. Sen. Orrin Hatch, who sits on the Judiciary Committee, couched his support for Lynch in terms of his dislike of the incumbent: Republicans have been complaining about Eric Holder for a long time; this is an opportunity to make that change, he said, according to a separate Politico report.

Republican Judiciary Committee member Sen. Jeff Flake of Arizona added: The president ought to get his people as long as theres no disqualifying substance there, and I dont think there is with her.

Democrats see some Republicans, such as Senators Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, Orrin G. Hatch of Utah and Flake as possible confirmation votes, the New York Times reported.

In the Loop: Departing Eric Holder blasts Senate Judiciary Republicans

Attorney General Eric Holder. (AP Photo/Susan Walsh)

Outgoing Attorney GeneralEric Holderhit back this weekat Senate Judiciary Committee Republicans who had hammered him (in absentia) throughout last weeks confirmation hearings on his likely successor, Loretta Lynch.

Holder, speaking at a news conference Tuesday to announce a$1.4 billion settlement of a lawsuit alleging Standard and Poors Financial Services tried to defraud investors, went way, way, off message at the end of the event.

This notion, he said, that under his watch this Justice Department has been politicized is totally inconsistent with the facts. You want to look at a politicized Justice Department, you look at the one I inherited, all right? You look at the way in which hiring was done here for political reasons.

Holder said his team had to rebuild this department and that it was a little irresponsible for Hill folks to characterize honest policy differences as political.

This will, of course, be one of Holders last news conferences at the department. Barring some major surprise, Lynch is expected to be approved by the committee the last week in February, with Senate confirmation likely the first or second week in March.

But Holders not going to be lounging around in his fifthfloor office, taking in the view. Oh no, hes off Thursday to sunny Oakland, Calif. for a Building Community Trust roundtable with local and federal officials in the morning. He then meets with students and police officers and tours the Willie Mays Boys and Girls Club in San Francisco.

Then, on Friday, he will be in Pasadena, Calif. to receivea major award at the 46th NAACP Image Awards that evening. Its a true Hollywood star-studded event, with folks like Angela Bassett, Laurence Fishburne, David Oyelowo, Kerry Washington and, yes, Oprah, expected to be there.

(Talk about heavy lifting.)
