Homeland Security bigs a leading contender to replace Eric Holder
WASHINGTON The deputy secretary for the Department of Homeland Security has emerged as a leading contender to be the next US attorney general, well-placed sources told The Post.
Cuban-American lawyer Alejandro Mayorkas is on the short list of candidates to replace outgoing Attorney General Eric Holder, the sources said. Hes one of the top candidates. He has all the qualifications needed to succeed in the job, one insider said.
Moyorkas has been bolstered by the support of the countrys largest law enforcement officers organization, the National Fraternal Order of Police (FOP).
National president Chuck Canterbury penned an Oct. 31 letter on behalf of Moyorkas and sent it to President Obama at the White House.
The letter, a copy of which was exclusively obtained by The Post, glowingly lays out Mayorkas public service experience in Washington, DC.
The FOP enthusiastically supported his nomination to his current post as Deputy Secretary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and it has been a true pleasure working with him in that capacity over the last year, Canterbury wrote. We have no doubt that Mr. Mayorkas has the requisite ability and experience to lead the U.S. Justice Department and meet the challenges in the years ahead.
Before DHS, Mayorkas was director of US citizenship and Immigration Services the biggest immigration system in the world with a $3 billion budget and 18,000 workers.
The insider said Mayorkas is the only candidate for attorney general with extensive managerial experience in DC.
Its essential to have managerial experience in a vast and complex agency like DOJ. Its not good enough to just be a lawyer, the insider said.
The insider pointed out that another top contender, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District Loretta Lynch, falls down in that area.
