Holder cancels graduation speech amid protests

Attorney General Eric Holder canceled a speech to a graduating class of police cadets in Oklahoma City on Thursday, after crowds of Oklahomans flocked to the ceremony to protest his appearance.

Protest organizers said Holder's planned speech to the law enforcement graduates was "inappropriate," and argued that the attorney general has failed to uphold the law himself.

"A lot of people just felt that it was very inappropriate for this man, with his track record, to speak to law enforcement officers that demand and expect to be backed up by the government working on behalf of the citizens, not against the citizens," State Rep. Mike Turner (R.), who is running for U.S. congress, told theWashington Free Beacon.

Turner said Holder has flouted the law when it comes to illegal immigration, the "Fast and Furious" gunrunning scandal, and the Second Amendment.

The U.S. House of Representatives held Holder in contempt of Congress in 2012, on the grounds that he was impeding investigations into Fast and Furious.

The Oklahoma City protest made national news Thursday afternoon, after Holder backed out of the speech shortly before the graduation ceremony began. Holder's office told the Washington Times that the last-minute cancelation was due to a scheduling issue.

"The attorney general had been looking to addressing the cadets, and regrets he cannot attend in person," spokesman Brian Fallon told the Washington Times. "He extends his heartfelt congratulations to the cadets and their families."

Eric Holder Does a Mean Lewis Black

Attorney General Eric Holder, left, took in a Lewis Black show over the weekend.

It sounds like Attorney General Eric Holder is practicing a new act for the next time he testifies before Congress.

Over the weekend, Holder went to see comedian and The Daily Show regular Lewis Black perform at Washingtons Warner Theatre. He came backstage, which was nice, cause he said he enjoyed the show, Black told Whispers. And then he said that maybe when he was in front of Congress he could do his Lewis Black imitation and then did a good imitation of me.

Blacks style of comedy involves a lot of name-calling, shouting and finger-pointing, something Holder had gotten down. He didnt really so much say, but shake his finger and just yell a little, Black said, noting that it was the best impression of himself that he has seen done by a Washingtonian.

Im actually thinking of having him do my next two performances, just to see if my audience even notices, Black said.

Holder is a regular at Capitol Hill hearings and has made news for his testy exchanges with lawmakers. Just last week, he let Rep. Louie Gohmert, R-Texas, have it after Gohmert hinted that Holder didnt care that the GOP-led House had held the attorney general in contempt two years ago. You dont want to go there, buddy, you dont want to go there, OK? Holder said.

You should not assume that that is not a big deal to me I think that it was inappropriate, I think it was unjust but never think that that was not a big deal to me, dont ever think that, Holder said,as a bemused Gohmert responded, I dont want to go there?

Blacks bedside manner is worse, but that's all part of his shtick. As he stepped up to the dais Monday at the National Press Club, he warned those in the audience and watching C-SPAN of what was to come. I may use profanity,so tough, Black said, before dropping a handful of f-bombs through the hourlong program.

Facing protests, Eric Holder cancels Oklahoma City speech

Facing a tight schedule and complaints from conservatives, Attorney General Eric Holder cancelled a planned speech to a group of graduating police cadets in Oklahoma City on Thursday.

Holder was scheduled to address 42 cadets with the Oklahoma City Police Department during their swearing-in ceremony on Thursday afternoon in downtown Oklahoma City.

The scheduled address drew threats of protests and the ire of local Republicans and conservative activists, including Rep. James Lankford, R-Okla., who said Holder was an "ironic" choice of speaker, given his "tactics of obfuscation and redirection of blame" as attorney general.

"I do not think our state has ever asked a federal official who is currently in Contempt of Congress to speak to our graduates," Lankford, who is also running for the GOP nomination for the U.S. Senate in 2014, said in a statement. "Given his numerous questionable decisions, his unwillingness to cooperate with congressional investigations and his Justice Department's opacity under this President, he would not be my first choice to stand as this Administration's example of justice, leadership and integrity."

The Justice Department, though, downplayed the role of politics in Holder's decision to cancel, blaming an unexpected delay. A Justice Department spokesman told CBS News' Paula Reid that Holder was forced to scuttle his plans because he was held up by a morning meeting in Washington, D.C. and he could not make it to Oklahoma City in time to speak.

Holder still plans to meet with the U.S. attorneys in Oklahoma City, according to the Justice Department, and he will also consult with U.S. attorneys during an earlier stop in Plano, Texas on Thursday. On Friday, the attorney general is scheduled to visit Omaha, Neb., to speak with the U.S. attorneys there.

Holder cancels speech to Oklahoma police recruits amid threatened protests

OKLAHOMA CITY, April 25 (UPI) -- A conservative state lawmaker claimed victory when U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder canceled a speech to graduating Oklahoma City police recruits.

About 75 protesters showed up outside the First Church in Oklahoma City, where the ceremony was held. Police Capt. Dexter Nelson said as many as 300 had been expected but many apparently decided to stay home when they learned Holder would not be there.

I think it was very understood that people could come together using their First Amendment right to assemble and speak, and thats what we did, Republican state Rep. Paul Wesselhoft said. We had a direct impact on the highest law official in America. Thats not small stuff.

U.S. District Judge Vicki Miles-LaGrange replaced Holder, addressing the class of 42 graduating recruits.

Holder, the first black head of the U.S. Justice Department, is a former U.S. attorney and federal judge. He has become a lightning rod for conservatives because of his support for gay rights and the Obama administration's efforts to reduce prison sentences for some drug offenders.

The Washington Post reported Thursday that Holder's associates in the Justice Department say he plans to remain in the administration until after the midterm elections but does not want to stay on the job through President Obama's second term. There had been speculation he would leave before the midterms because confirming a successor would be more difficult if the Republicans win a Senate majority.
