EU Most Likely to Turn to WTO Over Russia's Food Import Ban – Lithuanian Foreign Minister

BRUSSELS, August 7 (RIA Novosti) The European Union will most likely examine the possibility of turning to the World Trade Organization in regard to Russias banning the import of food products from the EU, Lithuanian Foreign Minister Linas Linkeviius told RIA Novosti on Thursday.

"We will hold consultations with our partners. The interests of EU member states in the WTO are protected by the European Commission and this is done in coordination. So I think that these issues will also be discussed, but its too early to speak of consequences. There will be [consequences], but what kind will have to be thoroughly examined and then make conclusions," Linkeviius said.

On Wednesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin singed an order on economic measures to protect the country's security. The decree banned for a year imports of agricultural and food products from countries that have imposed sanctions on Russia.

The list of the banned agricultural products includes meat, poultry and milk products as well as fruits and vegetables from the United States, the European Union, Canada, Australia and Norway.

The embargo does not include infant foods and goods.

Lithuania provided Russia with cheese, cottage cheese, meat, animal feed, drinks, potatoes, canned beans, fish and live pigs.

The Russian restrictions came as a response to the latest Western sanctions on the country's economic, defense and energy sectors, as well as dozens of individuals.

At the height of the Ukrainian crisis, the United States imposed several rounds of sanctions against Russian officials, business people and companies and pressed for the allies in the West to follow its lead. The European Union, Switzerland, Canada, Australia and Japan soon caved in to the US sanctions push and drew up their own blacklists.

Since March, the European Union has imposed a total of nine rounds of sanctions, with two of them against the former Ukrainian leadership and seven against Russia. Washington has adopted a total of six rounds of anti-Russian sanctions.

Moscow has repeatedly called the measures counterproductive and stressed that Russia is not involved in the Ukrainian conflict.

EU May Lose Up to $16 Bln Due to Russian Embargo

MOSCOW, August 7 (RIA Novosti) The European Union may lose up to 12 billion euro ($16 billion) because of Russias ban on food imports, the EU ambassador to Russia said Thursday.

"We are yet to analyze in detail what goods fall under sanctions, but it may reach up to 12 billion euro. Food and goods amount to 10 percent of what we export to Russia," Vygaudas Usackas told the Govorit Moskva radio station.

On Thursday, Russia unveiled its list of banned agriculture products from the United States and countries that imposed US-backed sanctions against Russia earlier. The one-year ban will target imports of beef, pork, fish, poultry, fruits, vegetables, nuts, as well as cheese and other dairy from the European Union, Canada, Australia and Norway. The embargo does not include alcoholic beverages, infant foods and products.

Lithuanian Foreign Minister Linas Linkeviius told RIA Novosti earlier that the 28-member union could discuss turning to the World Trade Organization (WTO), an international trade regulator, to put pressure on Russia to lift its newest food embargo.

At the height of the Ukrainian crisis, the United States imposed several rounds of sanctions against Russian officials, business people and companies and pressed for the allies in the West to follow its lead. The European Union, Canada, and Australia soon caved in to the US sanctions push and drew up their own blacklists.

Moscow said it is ready to review the terms of its import restrictions if Western partners show commitment to dialogue. The Kremlin has repeatedly called Western sanctions counterproductive and stressed that Russia was never involved in the Ukrainian conflict.

Nigeria: Court Martial – EU Rejects Death Sentences

The European Union (EU) has rejected the death sentence handed to 12 Nigerian soldiers by the General Court Martial in Nigeria for alleged mutiny.

The EU in a statement issued yesterday on the occasion of the World Day against Death Penalty condemned all death sentences especially after mass trials as was the case with the Nigerian soldiers.

The union, headed by Secretary-General, Mr. Thorbjrn Jagland, argued that execution had stopped in that region of the world for close to two decades

According to the statement: "On the European and World Day against the Death Penalty, the European Union and the Council of Europe reaffirm their strong and absolute opposition to capital punishment in all cases and under all circumstances, and their commitment to its worldwide abolition.

"We are deeply concerned about setbacks in some countries, such as recent mass trials leading to a vast number of death sentences. No execution has taken place in our member states in the last 17 years.

The European Union and the Council of Europe welcome the fact that all Member States of the European Union have now ratified both Protocols 6 and 13 to the European Convention on Human Rights, and urge all other European States that have not yet done so to sign and ratify these instruments which aim at the abolition of the death penalty."
