European Union approves merger of Chiquita and Fyffes, Wall Street Journal reports

The European Union on Friday (Oct. 3) approved the merger of Chiquita Brands Internationalwith Irish fruit giant Fyffes, effectively creating the largest banana company in the world, according to the Wall Street Journal.

As a condition of its approval, the EU required that Fyffes end its exclusivity deal with the shipping company Maersk and asked thatboth companies not enter negotiations with any shipping companies for a period of 10 years, the Journal said.

The merger had been delayed after two Brazilian companies, Cutrale Group and Safra Group, offered to buy Chiquita for over $600 million in August, the Journal wrote. Chiquita and Fyffes later agreed to a new merger deal that would give Chiqutua a larger share of company.

Chiquita is expected to begin its shipping operations out the Port of New Orleans this month. The firm announced in May that it would be relocating its operations from Gulfport, Miss, to New Orleans.

EU Moves Against Peace Process in Ukraine with New Russian Sanctions: Moscow

MOSCOW, September 11 (RIA Novosti) - The European Union has chosen against peace process in Ukraine by approving new sanctions against Russia, the Russian Foreign Ministry said Thursday.

"By making this step, the European Union has practically made its choice against the peaceful settlement of the internal crisis in Ukraine whose support is expected from all responsible forces in Europe," the ministry said in a statement.

"Brussels and leaders of EU member-countries must explain clearly to EU citizens why they are putting them at risk of confrontation, economic stagnation and job losses," the statement said.

On Thursday, the European Council officially unveiled additional sanctions against Russia adopted by the 28-member European Union earlier this week.

According to an EC statement, the strengthened sanctions will affect Russia's energy, finance and defense sectors, as well as 24 individuals allegedly "involved in actions against Ukraine's territorial integrity," including several Russian decision-makers and oligarchs.

Earlier today, Russia's Ambassador to EU Vladimir Chizhov said that by imposing new restrictive measures on Russia the European Union ignores the de-escalation of the situation in Ukraine and forces Russia to take certain counter-measures

The European Union and the United States have implemented several rounds of economic sanctions against Russia over Moscow's alleged participation in the Ukrainian conflict.

The total number of individuals subject to Western sanctions now stands at 119.

Russia responded to Western sanctions by imposing a one-year ban on the import of certain food products from the European Union, the United States, Canada, Australia and Norway in August.
