Indian expats mark Republic Day with mega cultural event

A large gathering of Indian community attended a grand cultural programme organised by the Indian Cultural Centre yesterday at Doha Cinema to celebrate the 63rd Republic Day of their country.
Children from eight Indian schools, two teams of ICC dance students and performers from 10 affiliated organisations presented a variety of patriotic, semi-classical, fusion and folk dances and skits.
The chief guest of the evening, Indian ambassador Deepa Gopalan Wadhwa urged the community members to keep flag of India flying high.
Highlighting the diverse cultural and religious elements that form the tapestry of India, she stated that this inclusiveness would not have been possible without the Constitution which came into force on 26 January 1950.
“Parents should teach their children about the founding fathers and freedom fighters of India and what our country stands for,” the envoy reminded.
Every Indian has the right to express his or her opinion and the democratic system is supported by the institutions of judiciary and media.
“When you watch on TV the discourses on various developments taking place back home you should tell your children that these are symbols of India’s strength,” Wadhwa said referring to the controversial issues that have become news headlines of late.
The ambassador maintained that such ‘checks and balances’ are needed to ensure India’s growth and exhorted community members not to be cynical regarding the state of affairs in their homeland.
“Have faith in India,” encouraged the diplomat who also released a souvenir to mark the occasion.
The event’s main sponsor IBQ’s administration and facilities head Chandramohan Pillai assured continuous support for the Indian community activities.
Indian embassy’s deputy chief of mission and ICC’s chief co-ordinating officer Sanjiv Kohli and advisory council chairman Hassan Chougule were also present on the dais.
ICC president K M Varghese welcomed the gathering and educational activities head Mantha Srinivas proposed a vote of thanks. General secretary Tarun Basu compered.
The cultural performances focused on the myriad facets of the Indian Republic and the common thread of unity that binds together a nation of immense diversity.
Millennium Kids, ICC dance students, Al Khor International School – Indian Stream, Doha Modern Indian School, Sanskriti, Bhavan’s Public School, Thirumuttam, Indian Women’s Association, Birla Public School, Karnataka Sangha, Ideal Indian School, Bhavan’s Cultural Centre, MES Indian School, DPS-Modern Indian School, Utkalika, Kerala Muslim Cultural Centre, Idea Qatar, Shantiniketan Indian School, and Maharashtra Mandal presented cultural items. Amit and Nidhi compered the cultural programme.

Australia seen as ideal home for expats: survey

SYDNEY (Reuters) - Australia beat out the United States and Singapore to take top place among expatriates as an ideal residence for quality of life and career prospects, according to an international survey released on Thursday.

More than 3,000 expatriates in over 100 countries rated nations on a range of criteria from accommodations to food, healthcare and the quality of the commute to work, according to HSBC's Expat Explorer survey, now in its fourth year.

Australia took the honors with 10 percent of respondents choosing the nation known for its sun-drenched beaches and solid economy as their preferred next posting location.

"The report suggests expats are putting lifestyle and well-being ahead of money and Australia wins hands down on this front," said Graham Heunis, head of retail banking and wealth management for HSBC Bank Australia.

The United States, which had slightly fewer votes than Australia, came in an extremely close second and was seen as offering the best career opportunities with higher remuneration, the report said.

Singapore, narrowly edged for third with 9 percent, appeared to combine the best of both worlds, with respondents noting its good quality of life along with prime job opportunities.

Hong Kong came in fourth, Canada fifth, the United Kingdom sixth and France seventh. Respondents said they were attracted to the higher salaries in Hong Kong and the United Kingdom, while Canada's lifestyle won it points.

Australia number one for expats – report

AUSTRALIA is the most popular place in the world for expats, despite the relatively lower earning potential the country offers, according to a global report.

International workers are attracted Down Under by the outdoor lifestyle, friendliness and work/life balance, according to the HSBC Expat Explorer report.

They are also more likely to stay longer or settle in Australia permanently than in other countries.

But Australians living overseas found that while the benefits of an offshore posting offer a more global outlook and greater financial rewards, it comes at the expense of lifestyle and wellbeing.

Australian expatriates said it was increasingly difficult to manage the pressures of work and life and they were generally less active since moving overseas.

More than 3000 expats from more than 100 countries responded to the annual survey, which looks at factors affecting lifestyle like accommodation, ease of organising finances, and the ability to make friends.

It found 10 per cent of expats chose Australia as the top destination for their next assignment, followed by the US, Singapore, Hong Kong and Canada.

The US and UK were chosen for financial gain.

HSBC Bank Australia head of retail banking and wealth management Graham Heunis said the report showed the importance of lifestyle factors in expat career choices.

"While financial rewards and career prospects are obviously important, the report suggests expats are putting lifestyle and wellbeing ahead of money and Australia wins hands down on this front,'' he said.

Australia ranked highly in terms of overall quality of life, work environment and ease of integration.

The report showed expats in Australia are twice as likely to stay or return to Australia in future than average.
