Texas Instruments launches ExamCalc™ software for use with Common Core State Standards (CCSS) Online Assessments

DALLAS, June 20, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --As the majority of states implement online exams for assessment of Common Core State Standards (CCSS), Texas Instruments (TI) is announcing a new program to make its ExamCalc software available to assessment providers for inclusion in states' selected CCSS summative assessments. ExamCalc software provides states with online versions of the TI-84 Plus graphing, TI-30XS MultiView scientific and TI-108 elementary calculators, for use during CCSS online exams.

To remove cost barriers, TI's ExamCalc software is offered under a commercial license and maintenance agreement without commercial license fees.

Based on research and development with educator input, ExamCalc software is designed to meet expected platform requirements of state education offices and CCSS Consortia and provides graphing, scientific and elementary calculator tools with the required features for assessment of Common Core Mathematical Standards.

"For years, educators have told us that students do best on exams when they have access to the same math technology that is used during classroom instruction. For states moving to online testing for Common Core Mathematics exams, educators and students can benefit from ExamCalc software that extends the proven benefits of TI calculators for improving student achievement to online testing situations," said Melendy Lovett, president of Texas Instruments Education Technology.

By making the ExamCalc software available to providers and states that deliver CCSS online assessments, TI is helping to enhance mathematical assessment tools, align assessment and classroom instruction technology, and promote student achievement.

TI is best known for the calculators widely recommended by educators for math instruction. With today's announcement TI now provides new ExamCalc software, along with support programs that include hundreds of free, ready-to-use, research-based classroom activities that support the Common Core Mathematics standards and practices. In addition, TI offers professional development designed to prepare educators for the Common Core math classroom particularly in algebra, geometry, and statistics. New York Times Curbs Free Mobile Content

New York Times Co. will limit the number of free stories that people can read through its mobile software to three articles per day, part of its effort to coax more readers into signing up for online subscriptions.

Beginning on June 27, any mobile user of New York Times applications can view three stories in all sections, blogs and slideshows, the company said today in a statement. Previously, nonsubscribers could read all articles in the Top News section, though they couldnt get any material from other areas.

Times Co., facing an industrywide advertising slump, is relying more heavily on subscription fees. Last year, revenue from subscriptions surpassed ad sales -- turning the typical business model for newspaper publishers on its head.

Theyre trying to make the online product more valuable, said Edward Atorino, an analyst at Benchmark Co. in New York. Any step to get more digital subscribers is important because thats the way the industrys going as print circulation is going down.

Alpha Software Launches Alpha Anywhere™, First Complete Environment to Rapidly Build and Deploy Business Applications …

BURLINGTON, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

Alpha Software today announced Alpha Anywhere, the first complete environment for rapid development and deployment of robust business applications for mobile devices and personal computers, including smartphones, tablets, PCs, Macs, Chromebooks, Ultrabooks, and touch-enabled computers.

Alpha Anywhere is a standards-based environment that dramatically reduces the cost, time and complexity of developing and deploying scalable, data-driven business applications for today's mobile + personal computing era. These applications can take advantage of hardware-specific features and support all display sizes on all platforms.

Developers with a wide range of skills can build business applications with Alpha Anywhere. Complete applications can be rapidly assembled using Alpha Anywhere's rich set of simple, intuitive, standards-based components that allow extensive customization. Developers also can build their own objects, methods, components and event handlers in standard programming languages on the client or server side of an application.

The efficient and timely acquisition of mobile skills is critical for developers to stay current, and Alpha Anywhere is the fastest way to gain proficiency and become productive in mobile and touch computing. With Alpha Anywhere, IT organizations, systems integrators and custom software developers can take advantage of existing development skills to build and deploy new mobile applications or mobile-enable existing applications. Developers who have used Microsoft Access, Visual Basic, PowerBuilder, FoxPro, Delphi and similar environments will feel right at home with Alpha Anywhere.

"Mobile capability is becoming a crucial requirement for business applications, and Alpha Anywhere has removed the barriers to cost-effectively create and deploy them," said Richard Rabins, Alpha Software CEO. "But, mobile doesn't exist in a vacuum. With personal computers and laptops continuing to play an important role in business, and with the growth of Ultrabooks and Chromebooks, applications must run on and be optimized for all mobile and personal computer platforms. Alpha Anywhere addresses these needs."

Developers using Alpha Anywhere can build complete business applications utilizing HTML5, CSS, and JavaScript components. If a native, mobile application is required, Alpha Anywhere supports Cordova/PhoneGap to take full advantage of native platform features, such as the camera, media capture, native notifications, network status, local file system, and the accelerometer. Alpha is adding custom plug-ins including bar code scanning, credit card reading/processing, audio recording with compression, and SMS.

ALPHA ANYWHERE: A COMPLETE DEVELOPMENT AND DEPLOYMENT ENVIRONMENT

"Mobile makes the developer's job much harder. End users expect a myriad of task-specific applications on short notice, all tuned to a highly productive touch-and-swipe interface that is tremendously challenging for developers," said Dan Bricklin, Chief Technology Officer at Alpha Software. "At the same time, users require full power on the desktop for heavy duty data analysis, data entry, and to view reports on large screen monitors controlled by a keyboard and mouse. Alpha Anywhere empowers developers to meet these expectations."

Alpha Anywhere combines full mobile capabilities with core technology from Alpha Five, an environment in which tens of thousands of scalable, data-driven business applications have been built. This assures developers that Alpha Anywhere has the maturity, maintainability, scalability and security needed to create and deploy feature-rich applications for mobile devices and personal computers.
