Free software, providing stolen computer theft recovery and identity protection, has been offered to all first year University of Birmingham students moving into the private rented sector this September.
The Guild of Students Student Mentor Scheme and Community Wardens, in collaboration with West Midlands Police, have been touring campus, visiting students living in University accommodation, and installing LoJack licenses. Andy Smith, University of Birmingham Police Officer, said: LoJack gives students the power to remotely locate, lock and delete the data on their computer should it fall into the wrong hands.
The roll-out of LoJack licences since 2010, correlates with a 60% drop in burglary during October, November, and December a time when the number of offences usually reported in Selly Oak, an area highly populated with Birmingham students, is at its highest.
To date, LoJack has a near enough 100 per cent success rate in recovering laptops and returning them to their rightful owner the only one that not to be recovered went to Peru. These figures indicate that LoJack is not only reuniting students with their laptops, but is working as a deterrent to would-be thieves.
