Many managers view compliance programs as a headache -- something they're required to invest time and money in, but which produces little. A benchmark report from the United States shows that the opposite is the case. Investing in strong compliance programs saves money in the long run.
The research report by Ponemon Institute LLC in Traverse City, Michigan, examines the real costs, both of setting up a proper compliance program and of cleaning up the damage when proper programs have not been put in place. The study looked at 46 multinational organisations and interviewed 160 leaders.
The cost of compliance worked out to only about$222 per employee, while noncompliance costs averaged about$820 per employee.
"We learned that while the average cost of compliance for the organizations in our study is $3.5 million, the cost of non-compliance is much greater," the report said. Cleaning up non-compliance problems averaged nearly $9.4 million.
The report also looked at the 10 attributes that lend the greatest support to a strong compliance structure. Many of them pertain togovernanceand oversight of the organization's security initiatives.

Windows-using TiVo owners should make a beeline for the TiVo Desktop download link below, because on June 5th its free edition is going away. This software allows user to bring their personal music and photos to the TiVo, and more notably, transfer recordings from the DVR to their PCs. The paid version that adds support for transferring videos to the TiVo and DVR recordings to mobile devices will still be available at a cost of $15.99, lowered from $24.99. As ZatzNotFunny points out, there have been indications that a replacement may be in the works, but nothing -- including updates for Windows 8 -- has been promised yet. The free Mac version is still kicking, but it's only good for pushing photos and music to the box, although Tech of the Hub notes several free alternatives (for both platforms) including kmttg, PyTiVo and iTivo. The current software hadn't seen many updates recently, so if this is just clearing the table for a version that ties into the TiVo Stream transcoder, it might be worthwhile.

Data Translation Announces New Data Acquisition Application Software, QuickDAQ 2013 Offered Free
The ouster of the free version means users will have to buy a $15.99 edition of TiVo's PC desktop software.
TiVo users who want to install the company's PC software have until June 5 to grab it for free.
The TiVo Desktop for PC program lets you listen to your music and view your photos on your TV. You can also transfer shows recorded on your TiVo box to your PC. But in less than a month, that version will be no more.
Starting June 6, TiVo users will have to pony up $15.99 (down from $24.95) to buy the TiVo Desktop Plus software. The Plus edition offers all of the features of the free version. But it's also compatible with Windows 8 and lets you transfer shows to portable devices and view Web videos on your TiVo box.
TiVo owners who download the free software will still be able to use it after June 5, but it won't support Windows 8. The free version is available at TiVo's Web site for Windows PCs and the Mac, while the Plus version appears to be available just for Windows at this point.
