Autodesk makes design software free to students worldwide

Summary: The software maker estimated that means free educational access for more than 680 million students and educators from over 800,000 secondary and post-secondary schools across 188 countries.

Autodesk just trotted out its own present for students worldwide, but this gift will keep on giving far beyond Cyber Monday.

The Bay Area-based firm announced on Monday that it would be making its professional design, engineering and entertainment software free to students, teachers and academic institutions worldwide.

This includes Autodesk's flagship suite of cloud-based products, such as the A360 collaboration platform and Fusion 360 for 3D printing.

The move stems from Autodesk's previously announced domestic commitment to President Obamas ConnectED Initiative, a project launched in June intended to connect all American students and schools to next-generation Internet network speeds.

Adobe and Apple, among other Silicon Valley giants, have also committed financial and technological resources.

Thus, building upon free software for academic institutions in the United States, Autodesk is extending the helping hand to more than 680 million students and educators from over 800,000 secondary and post-secondary schools across 188 countries.

The placement of free educational access starting as soon as middle school through university levels also serves the useful purpose of building Autodesk's following from the ground up. Such an initiative is tailored to establish a global community of accustomed and loyal users from a much earlier age with the intent of keeping architects, designers and engineers onboard throughout their careers.

Autodesk Software Now Free For Schools And Students Everywhere

The boxed copy sales model for professional software is dead, and increasingly companies are realizing that charging certain customers at all doesnt make much sense. Microsoft figured it out, and Autodesk is expanding the pool of people who get free access to include all students, teachers and schools at academic institutions around the world. Thats in addition to the U.S., where it made its software free earlier this year as part of the ConnectED program created by President Barack Obama.

The move means that Autodesk software, including AutoCAD, Sketchbook, 3D Max, Maya and more, will be available to around 680 million students and teachers across 800,000 secondary and post-secondary schools, according to the company, without any paid license required. The catch is that some cloud services and support require additional paid subscriptions, but thats pretty much par for the course when it comes to enterprise software sales model these days.

Free software for schools and students means that people will come out of those institutions with the skills needed to make use of your tools in enterprise settings, which in turn should help workplaces select your software for company-wide use. Its a logical move, and in a world where cloud services can provide additional revenue to shore up losses from boxed copy and license sales, one that should ultimately benefit Autodesk far more than any money its giving up in the short-term.
