Tax Deadline Is Quickly Approaching

WASHINGTON, D.C.(WIBW)-- Today is the tax deadline and the Free File Alliance, a nonprofit coalition of industry-leading tax software companies partnered with the IRS, reminds taxpayers that free, brand-name tax software is available at http://www.IRS.gov/FreeFile . The "Free File" program, allows all taxpayers to e-file their federal tax returns or extensions at no cost.

Tax payers with a 2013 Adjusted Gross Income of $58,000 or less, about 70 percent of Americans, may choose from 14 leading tax software providers to prepare and e-file their federal tax returns for free. Basic federal e-filing services, called Free File Fillable Forms, are also available regardless of income level.

Free File is the perfect solution for Americans who are crunched for time, said Tim Hugo, executive director of the Free File Alliance. Also, anyone can use Free File to submit an extension from their computer giving themselves an extra six months to prepare and file a federal tax return, and taxpayers making $58,000 or less can access brand-name software to prepare and e-file their tax return in minutes.

Tax software options can be found at http://www.IRS.gov/freefile.

Free File has saved taxpayers an estimated $1.2 billion in preparation and filing costs since the program began in 2003. Free File Alliance member companies have continually worked with the IRS to strengthen the Free File program, and taxpayers have consistently reported that it is user-friendly and efficient. Responding to a 2009 IRS survey, 96 percent of users said they found Free File easy to use, while 98 percent said they would recommend the program to others.

The Free File Alliance is a nonprofit coalition of 14 industry-leading tax software companies that has partnered with the IRS since 2003 to help low and middle-income Americans prepare, complete and e-file their federal tax returns online. The Free File Alliance is committed to giving 70 percent of Americans free access to the industrys top online tax preparation software. About 40 million returns have been filed through IRS Free File since its inception.

More Speed with CHoose: The Configurator for Bosch Rexroth Compact Hydraulics

Free software tool to configure and design custom manifolds

Photo caption: CHoose is a free software tool from Bosch Rexroth that allows the user to configure a unique hydraulic circuit and begin design work on a Hydraulic Integrated Circuit manifold or Compact Directional Valve sectional assembly.

CHoose is a new, free configuration tool for customized Bosch Rexroth Compact Hydraulic solutions. CHoose accelerates the design process for machine OEMs and all appliers of hydraulic circuits.

Bosch Rexroth now offers CHoose, free software that allows the user to configure a unique hydraulic circuit and begin design work on a Hydraulic Integrated Circuit (HIC) manifold or Compact Directional Valve sectional assembly.

Operating the tool is easy and intuitive: simply select suitable Rexroth parts from among thousands of possibilities in the component library, drag-and-drop them directly into the circuit and then connect ports and valves to represent hydraulic functionality. Detailed specifications such as pressure settings, solenoid coil voltages, electrical connections and porting can all be selected by the user through simple menu selections.

After a circuit concept is complete, the layout of the custom solution can be created within CHooses 3D design environment. Custom manifolds and sectional valves emerge from concept to reality with simple drag-and-drop positioning. Design Tips are offered to guide the user through this process and ensure a realistic representation.

Once a design is completed, CHoose provides several 2D and 3D export and print options so that its output can be used in other CAD or modeling software. An extensive list of Project Parameters is provided for entry by the user and allows all core data relevant to the technical and commercial aspects of the project to be stored, modified and reported easily. Additionally, the Parameter data provides the basis for a degree of error checking in component selection to help the CHoose user reduce easy mistakes and oversights.

The CHoose configuration tool currently covers Cartridge Valves and Manifolds together with Compact Directional (Bankable) Valves. During 2014, Bosch Rexroth plans to expand the tool to include Compact Power Modules (Power Units) and Compact Motion Control Valves.

Windows XP lives on: Avast survey shows 27 percent of its XP users don't plan to switch

Microsoft may have ended support for Windows XP, but free antivirus software vendor Avast projects that for millions of users, that wont mean squat.

Avast had previously reported that 23.6 percent of its users were still running Windows XP. In the days before Microsoft ended support of Windows XP on April 8, Avast surveyed close to 165,000 of those users. The results, released in in a blog post on Monday, indicate that 27 percent of Avasts Windows XP users dont plan on doing anything, even though Windows XP systems are theoretically vulnerable to attack from hitherto unreported vulnerabilities.

Avast itself has reported that Windows XP users are attacked several times more frequently than those running Windows 7.

Avast, like other antimalware vendors, has committed to supporting Windows XP for two years or more. Microsoft, too, has commited to antimalware updates until July 2015. But using antimalware as the duct tape for an otherwise unpatched system is generally considered unwise, as Avast itself notes. This number is relatively high considering the security risks involved with the OS and makes one wonder how many XP users are not concerned about their protection and arent planning on upgrading their OS, buying a new PC or seeking AV that will support them, the company noted.

According to Microsoft, this needs to go. Some users feel differently.

Avast says it has over 200 million users who have downloaded and run its free antimalware suite, giving it a significant user base to query. Of the164,496 users who responded, Avast said that that 21 percent of its Windows XP users were unaware that Microsoft was ending support for Windows XP. That might explain why only 15 percent of those Windows XP users were planning to upgrade their operating system, according to Avast. And only 5 percent of users plan to buy an entirely new PC, even though that, too, is strongly advised.

Avast also recommends that its customers switch away from Internet Explorer 8, whose version for Windows XP will no longer be supported. In its place, the company recommended users move to Googles Chrome browser, which updates itself.

Can antimalware protect the average PC? It depends on the needs, said Michael Silver, an analyst for Gartner, in an email. Characterizing anti malware as a patch is really inaccurate, he wrote. However there are companies that claim their antimalware software will specifically look for malicious activity based on security holes found after support ended, for example, Arkoon Extended XP. For some users and organizations that will be sufficient. For others, especially where compliance is an issue, an unsupported version of Windows is really a non-starter.

However, Silver added an important caveat: Even a patched OS has risks. If you did enough to reduce surface area for attack, you could create a Windows XP system thats more secure than the typical Windows 7 PC, he said.

Avast executives could not be reached for comment, though a spokesperson did confirm the survey results for our article.
