Man who says he shot George Zimmerman in self-defense …

A man who claimed he shot at George Zimmerman in self-defense was found guilty of attempted second-degree murder on Friday and faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 20 years in prison.

Appersons defense claimed he was acting in self-defense after Zimmerman pointed a gun at him, but Floridas Assistant State Attorney Stewart Stone told jurors Appersons didnt meet the standard for self-defense, because he failed to act in a "reasonable, prudent or cautious manner before shooting.

Zimmerman denied Appersons version of events but did confess to having two firearms in his truck.

The two men had known each other prior to the 2015 incident, according to prosecution, and had an ongoing feud.

Zimmerman was famously acquitted for the shooting death of unarmed black teenager Trayvon Martin in 2012.

He similarly alleged he was acting in self defense.

Apperson was also found guilty of aggravated assault and shooting into an occupied vehicle. His sentencing will take place next month.

Man who shot at George Zimmerman guilty of attempted …

A Florida man who fired a gun at George Zimmerman's truck during a road-rage confrontation has been convicted of attempted second-degree murder.

Local news outlets report jurors also found 37-year-old Matthew Apperson guilty Friday of shooting into a vehicle and aggravated assault with a firearm. He is scheduled to be sentenced Oct. 17.

Apperson testified that he acted in self-defense last year. He said he fired at Zimmerman because Zimmerman flashed a gun.

But prosecutor Stewart Stone told jurors that Zimmerman's vehicle had tinted windows, which were rolled up during the confrontation.

Apperson's attorney, Michael LaFay, attacked Zimmerman's credibility, calling him a liar.

Zimmerman was acquitted three years ago in the fatal shooting of Trayvon Martin, an unarmed black 17-year-old. That case sparked protests and a national debate about race relations.

Closing arguments underway in George Zimmerman shooter …

A Seminole County jury deliberated for nearly four hours Friday before finding a man guilty of attempted second-degree murder with a firearm for shooting at George Zimmerman's truck in May.

The jury also convicted Matthew Apperson, 27, of shooting into an occupied vehicle and aggravated assault with a firearm. The Winter Springs man faces a minimum of 20 years in prison because the crimes involved a gun. His wife and mother, who attended the five-day trial, walked out crying and would not comment.

Apperson, a paralegal, sought to convince jurors he acted in self defense when he shot a single bullet from his .357 Magnum into Zimmerman's car on May 11, 2015. Apperson testified that Zimmerman threatened to shoot him and flashed a gun first. The bullet missed Zimmerman's face, lodging itself in the truck's metal frame.

Assistant State Attorney Stewart Stone told jurors that Apperson instigated the confrontation and chased Zimmerman in a car, which was caught on video surveillance from a nearby post office.

Stone said Apperson's behavior fails to meet the standard of self defense because he did not act in a reasonable, prudent or cautious manner prior to firing. Zimmerman testified that he never brandished a gun, and Apperson said he shouted expletives at Zimmerman.

"George Zimmerman is no boy scout I get that, and you get that," Stone said. "But no matter how you feel about George Zimmerman, he he can still be a victim of a crime, and he was in this case."

Zimmerman, 32, is the former neighborhood watch volunteer acquitted in the 2012 death of unarmed black teenager Trayvon Martin, a case that spurred protests across the country. In the Apperson trial, Zimmerman testified for about seven hours and returned Friday with an attorney to listen to closing arguments. He left immediately after, and did not return for the verdict.

Defense attorney Michael LaFay, in his closing argument, attacked Zimmerman's credibility as a major witness in the case. He repeatedly referenced the Trayvon case, questioning Zimmerman about his first encounter with the 17-year-old. LaFay also called Zimmerman's ex-girlfriend to testify about a fight between her and an armed Zimmerman, which prompted her to call 911.

"He is a belligerent, obnoxious liar, and I don't say that lightly," LaFay told jurors. "[Zimmerman] is a bully with a lot of guns and a lot of ammunition."

Attorneys clashed in closing arguments when Stone accused the defense of trying to put Zimmerman back on trial. LaFay objected, saying the comments stirred sympathy in the jury for the victim, which would be an attorney violation. Seminole-Brevard Circuit Judge Debra Nelson cautioned Stone to "stop walking the line."

Zimmerman and Apperson have a history dating back to Sept. 9, 2014. That day both were driving next to each other on Lake Mary Boulevard and started arguing. According to testimony, Zimmerman thought Apperson was gesturing at him and they began shouting over the Trayvon case. Apperson said he told Zimmerman he was wrong to kill Trayvon, which is when Zimmerman began threatening and following him.

Stone said Apperson "retaliated" against Zimmerman during their encounter in May because of this earlier dispute. To discredit Apperson's testimony that he felt in fear of his life when he saw Zimmerman flash a gun first, Stone relied on two pieces of evidence: Zimmerman's window was rolled up when the shot was fired and his windows were too darkly tinted for anyone to see inside. Police officers and crime scene analysts verified that information during the trial.

Apperson has awaited his trial in jail because he violated his bond committing another crime urinating on his neighbor's front door.

Apperson's sentencing is set for Oct. 17.

George Zimmerman Takes the Stand in Road Rage Case – ABC News

George Zimmerman took the stand today in a trial against Matthew Apperson, a Florida man accused of shooting at him.

Zimmerman described for the court "a loud bang" and said his "ears started ringing" after shots were fired at him.

Apperson is charged with attempted second-degree murder, and authorities say that he shot at Zimmerman during a traffic incident last year.

Zimmerman described driving in the Orlando suburb of Lake Mary when Apperson pulled behind his truck, threatened him and then fired at him.

Apperson had a fixation on Zimmerman, according to a police report.

Zimmerman emerged as a divisive figure when he was a neighborhood watch volunteer in Sanford, Florida, in February 2012 and fatally shot Trayvon Martin, an unarmed black 17-year-old. Zimmerman was acquitted of murder in July 2013.

Martin's shooting and the controversial decision to acquit Zimmerman became a flashpoint in the debate about race relations in America and served as one of the influences in the formation of the Black Lives Matter movement.

Zimmerman has frequently provoked outrage since his acquittal. In 2015 he generated headlines for retweeting an image of Martin's body.

He received intense criticism earlier this year for auctioning off the pistol he used to shoot Martin.

George Zimmerman testifies man shot at him during traffic …

SANFORD, Fla. GeorgeZimmermantestified that he was driving to a doctor's appointment when he noticed he was being pursued by a vehicle whose driver later pulled up, exchanged words and fired one gunshot at him that missed.

"I heard a bang and my ears started ringing,"Zimmerman, 32, told the jury in the attempted second-degree murder trial of Matthew Apperson, 37. The trial opened Tuesday in the Seminole County Courthouse.

The incident on May 11, 2015 was not the first encounter between Apperson andZimmerman, the former neighborhood watch volunteer who fatally shooting unarmed teenager Trayvon Martin in 2012. Apperson alleged in September 2014 thatZimmermanthreatened him in a road-rage encounter, but did not press charges at the time.

During the later exchange,Zimmermantestified that Apperson asked whether he remembered him and said he didn't press charges earlier "because I wanted to kill you myself."

Apperson's attorney, Michael LaFay, said thatZimmermanwas the aggressor and brandished a gun in both incidents, but prosecutor Stewart Stone said there was no way Apperson could have seen a gun through the tinted windows ofZimmerman'scar.

The trial was scheduled to continue Wednesday.

In the Martin case,Zimmermanclaimed self-defense and was acquitted of charges in the shooting, a verdict that sparked protests and a national debate about race relations. Martin was black andZimmermanidentifies as Hispanic.
