SANFORD, Fla. Florida authorities say George Zimmerman, whose acquittal of murdering an unarmed black teen sparked a national debate on race and self-defense laws, has been charged with aggravated assault and domestic violence with a weapon.

MyFox Tampa Bay said the 31-year-old former neighborhood watchman appeared before a judge Saturday morning. The judge set bond at $5,000 and ordered Zimmerman to surrender his firearms and to have no contact with the victim in the the case.

He was released around 12:30 p.m. after spending several hours in jail, authorities said.

Zimmerman's attorney Don West told the Orlando Sentinel that his client was charged after allegedly throwing a bottle of wine at his girlfriend several days ago.

The Seminole County Sheriff's Office said Zimmerman was arrested in Lake Mary about 10 p.m. Friday and taken to the John E. Polk Correctional Facility.

During the court appearance, Judge John Galluzzo did not give details of the incident, but said it happened at Zimmerman's home in Lake Mary.

The judge ordered Zimmerman to pack up any personal belongings the woman may have left at Zimmerman's home and give them to his lawyer.

Zimmerman appeared in court in blue scrubs and handcuffs. He appeared calm during the hearing. At one point he laughed and joked with an officer as he signed paperwork.

George Zimmerman was arrested on aggravated assault charges in central Florida after allegedly throwing a wine bottle at his girlfriend, police said Saturday.

The 31-year-old acquitted in 2013 of a second-degree murder charge for shooting unarmed teenager Trayvon Martin was arrested in Lake Mary, Fla. around 10 p.m. Friday.

During a brief court appearance Saturday morning, Zimmerman appeared scruffy and disheveled. He was ordered held on $5,000 bail.

Attorney Don West, Zimmermans co-counsel during the 2013 murder trial, claimed the incident occurred earlier in the week.

He was accused of throwing a wine bottle in her direction, West told the Daily News. He denies having done that.

Seminole County Judge John Galluzzo ordered Zimmerman to surrender any firearms and to the avoid contact with the unidentified alleged victim, who did not appear at the hearing.

Galluzzo also instructed Zimmerman not to enter Volusia County, where the girlfriend lives.

Since this happened at Mr. Zimmermans residence and the victim lives in another county, I dont think a GPS is necessary, Galluzzo said after a prosecutor asked that he be fitted with an ankle monitor.

If you step over the river, youll have a problem, the judge warned.

Zimmerman, a neighborhood watchman, shot Trayvon in February 2012 in a confrontation in a gated Florida community. The tragedy and the ensuing trial and acquittal sparked protests across the nation.

The 31-year-old Florida resident was arrested Friday by police in Lake Mary at about 10 p.m. and booked into the John E. Polk Correctional Facility, according to that facility's website. That facility, like its website, is run by the Seminole County Sheriff's Office.

It all came about after Zimmerman allegedly threw a wine bottle at a girlfriend, his lawyer Don West told reporters.

"Whatever happened took place several days ago," said West. "And, as far as I know, they have not been together for some time, certainly not since then."

Police first learned about it after coming "in contact with the (alleged) victim at a traffic stop" on Monday, Lake Mary police spokeswoman Bianca Gillett said.

When asked about the delay in making the arrest, Gillett said the arresting officer tried to reach Zimmerman on Monday and Tuesday, but couldn't, and was off-duty Wednesday and Thursday. It was the officer's decision not to pass off the case to another officer, Gillett said.

The incident is the latest legal run-in for Zimmerman since his acquittal in July 2012 on a murder charge in the death of Martin, a 17-year-old African-American. In fact, it's his second arrest for alleged domestic violence against a girlfriend -- though Lake Mary police spokeswoman Bianca Gillett said this alleged "victim is not the same (woman) as in 2013."

"It's clear he hasn't been very lucky with the ladies the last few months," West said of his client.

Judge bars contact, orders weapons surrendered

Zimmerman appeared Saturday morning before Judge John Galluzo, who decided to bar him from contacting the alleged victim or going into Volusia County. He was also told to surrender any weapons to a relative or third party, but not to stop drinking since the judge said "there wasn't any allegation of abuse of alcohol in the arrest affidavit."

George Zimmerman is now facing another brush with the law. The Florida man, who was acquitted in 2013 over the shooting death of unarmed black teen Trayvon Martin, was arrested Friday on suspicion of domestic violence and aggravated assault with a weapon.

Police in Lake Mary, Fla. detained the 31-year-old around 10 p.m. Friday and booked him at the John E. Polk Correctional Facility, according to Seminole County documents.

During a court appearance Saturday morning, Zimmerman's bond was set at $5,000 and he was ordered to avoid contact with the woman who was not identified, the Associated Press reports.

Judge John Galluzzo gave few details of the incident, but said a wine bottle was involved and that the alleged assault happened at Zimmerman's home. Prosecutors questioned whether substance abuse treatment was needed, but the judge said that didn't seem to be a factor.

After the brief hearing, Zimmerman's attorney, Don West, told the Orlando Sun-SentinelSaturday that his client was arrested after allegedly throwing a wine bottle at his girlfriend several days ago.Zimmerman is scheduled to appear back in court on Feb. 17.

Zimmerman, a former neighborhood watchman in Sanford, Fla., first made headlines in 2012 after a confrontation with 17-year-old Martin led to Zimmerman fatally shooting the teenager. He was charged with second-degree murder but was found not guilty in an emotionally-charged trial that brought to the fore discussions of race relations in America.

Zimmerman has since had several brushes with the law. Two weeks after his acquittal, he was pulled over for speeding in northern Texas. In September 2013, his estranged wife, Shellie, called 911 to report that Zimmerman had punched her father and was threatening them with a gun.

Im really, really afraid, she can be heard saying in the 911 tape.

Mrs. Zimmerman decided not to press charges.

About two months later, Zimmermans girlfriend Samantha Scheibe told police that he had pointed a gun at her after she told him to move out. Zimmerman was arrested on charges of domestic violence and released on $9,000 bail. Scheibe later said her story had been misinterpreted and dropped the charges.

George Zimmerman, the neighborhood watch volunteer acquitted in the 2013 shooting death of Trayvon Martin, was arrested in Florida late Friday and has been charged with aggravated assault with a weapon.

Zimmerman, 31, was accused of throwing a wine bottle at a woman at his home, according to Lake Mary, Fla., police. A Seminole County judge set a $5,000 bond.

The incident is the latest in a series of run-ins with the law that have plagued Zimmerman since his acquittal in the 2012 death of Martin, an unarmed black teen.

In September, Zimmerman was questioned by police after a confrontation with his wife, Shellie Zimmerman, after she called 911 and told the dispatcher that she was "really, really afraid" and not sure what Zimmerman was capable of doing. Ms. Zimmerman had received probation the previous month on perjury charges for lying about the couple's finances during her husband's bonding hearing in the Martin case.

The couple later split and she has since filed for divorce.

Two months later, Zimmerman was charged with aggravated assault against his then girlfriend. She later asked that the charges be dropped.

In September of last year, Zimmerman reportedly threatened a driver in a road rage incident, but the other driver declined to press charges.
