The Justice Department investigation of George Zimmerman in the 2012 shooting death of Trayvon Martin remains open, despite reports that charges won't be filed, a law enforcement official told Fox News.

The investigation into the shooting is active and ongoing, one Justice Department source told Fox News Channel.

A second Justice Department source said Wednesday charges were unlikely, however, adding that the evidence in the case was pretty thin.

The Washington Post reported Wednesday, citing three sources close to the matter, that Zimmerman is not expected to be charged due to insufficient evidence. The probe was opened two years ago following Martins high-profile shooting death in Sanford, Fla.

Martin, 17, was unarmed when he was fatally shot by Zimmerman, a former volunteer neighborhood watchman who said he killed the black teen in self-defense. The killing led to widespread protests across the country and elicited emotional responses from President Obama and other administration officials. Zimmerman was ultimately acquitted during a state trial.

Relatives of Martin accused Zimmerman, who identifies himself as Hispanic, of racially profiling the teen and instigating the fight. Since the acquittal, Zimmerman has had several brushes with the law, most recently last month when he allegedly threatened a motorist in Florida. The unidentified man declined to press charges, police said.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

George Zimmerman May Not Face Civil Rights Charges In Trayvon Martin's Death Case

The U.S. Justice Department is unlikely to bring civil rights charges against George Zimmerman, who shot and killed black teenager Trayvon Martin in 2012, despite allegations that that the killing was racially motivated. The investigation was opened two years ago, after the incident triggered protests across the country.

The Justice Departments civil rights division investigated Zimmerman, but officials now say that they do not have enough evidence to bring federal charges against him, the Washington Post reported. Martins family attorney reportedly said that they have not heard a final decision from U.S. officials on the case while a spokesperson for the Department reportedly said that the investigation is active and ongoing.

Zimmermanwasacquittedof a second-degree murder and manslaughter charges in a state trial in Florida, despite several demands to Attorney General Eric H. Holder that a federalcivil rights caseshould be opened against him.

I was watching the whole case pretty closely for two years, and they didnt do anything except take those 40 statements, Mark OMara, Zimmermans attorney said, accordingto the Washington Post, adding that the statements suggested that George acted in very non-racist ways. He took a black girl to the prom. His best buddy was a black guy. He mentored two black kids. He sought justice for a black homeless man beaten up by a white cops son.

To those who have seen civil rights investigations and civil rights violations, OMara added, It looked as though the Department of Justice was just placating pressure that existed by suggesting there was an ongoing investigation.

Martin was unarmed whenZimmerman, a neighborhood watch volunteer, shot and killed him. Prosecutors in a civil rights case would not only have to prove that Zimmerman followedMartinbecause of his race, but would also have to prove that his shooting of Martin was racially motivated.

These are very difficult cases to make, a law enforcement official who knew about the case told the Washington Post, adding: There is a high burden. We have to prove that a person was doing this with the intent of depriving someone of his civil rights.

Robert Zimmerman talks about life with infamous brother George

SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla., Sept. 30 (UPI) -- In the two years since George Zimmerman shot and killed Trayvon Martin, life has been turned upside down for his family.

Speaking to GQ, members of the Zimmerman family spoke about life after "the incident" -- the night Robert Zimmerman Jr. said his brother became the "Wreck-It Ralph of America."

"I learn a lot from watching Keeping Up with the Kardashians," Robert Zimmerman said, of being thrust into the role of family crisis manager. "Like, use the [expletive] you've got."

He said the family hoped once George Zimmerman was found not guilty of second-degree murder in July 2013, the family could find a way to flip their newfound notoriety into riches, like a home-security company called Z Security Products with George as the spokesman.

"They all start with Z," Robert said of their many business ideas.

"There's the Z Bar, the Z Rock, and the Z Beam. They're all targeted to women. One is to secure sliding doors. One is to put in the front door. The light is to carry and is designed by George. It has a little alarm -- you know, Help me, help me!"

He had plans for reality television: John Walsh did it with America's Most Wanted after his son was abducted and killed, as did the aforementioned Kardashians, whose fame was launched by Kim's leaked sex tape.

But no reality gig would come without rehabbing George Zimmerman's image: An appearance on Hannity, meant to start the process, fell apart on logistics. Fox wanted him to fly on February 26 -- the second anniversary of the shooting.

"It is like 9/11 for my family! We can't travel together that day -- it's like having the whole royal family travel together!" Robert Zimmerman said he told Fox.

Instead, he suggested the network pay for a security detail and rooms in a four-star hotel for the brothers to drive up from central Florida, a suggestion Fox refused.
