Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton recently offered a candid reflection on her 2016 presidential campaign, attributing her loss in part to female voters who abandoned her in the campaign's final days. "They left me because they just couldnt take a risk on me, because as a woman, Im supposed to be perfect," Clinton stated. "They were willing to take a risk on [former President Trump] who had a long list of, lets call them flaws, to illustrate his imperfection because he was a man, and they could envision a man as president and commander in chief."

This sentiment was echoed by several of Clinton's allies during the 2016 election, who highlighted the sexist double standards she encountered. Tracy Sefl, a Democratic consultant and Clinton surrogate, remarked at the time, "Is there a double standard? One hundred percent times 100 percent. And God forbid if she coughs."

Clinton's reflections come amid ongoing discussions about the barriers female politicians face. The challenges she described were not unique to her campaign. Former GOP presidential candidate Nikki Haley, for instance, encountered sexist attacks during her own run before suspending her campaign in March. During a Republican primary debate last year in Miami, fellow candidate Vivek Ramaswamy referred to her as Dick Cheney in three-inch heels, highlighting the persistent gender-based criticisms women in politics endure.

In addition to discussing her campaign, Clinton also critiqued her own party for its handling of abortion rights. She argued that Democrats failed to fully anticipate and counter the power of anti-abortion advocates, leading to the Supreme Courts 2022 decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, which ended the federal right to abortion access.

"We didnt take it seriously, and we didnt understand the threat," Clinton said. "Most Democrats, most Americans, did not realize we are in an existential struggle for the future of this country." She expressed regret, noting, "We could have done more to fight."

Clintons interview, conducted by The New Times in February and published on Saturday, delves into these issues with a critical eye. Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN) did not disagree with 2016 Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton that their party could have been more proactive in protecting abortion access before the Supreme Court repealed Roe v. Wade.

Walz, who represented Minnesotas 1st Congressional Districtfrom 2007 to 2019, cited his first congressional campaign as an example when asked to respond to Clintons criticism.

I dont think shes totally wrong, Walz told CNNs State of the Union on Sunday. Look, I ran in a conservative district, second Democrat since 1892, when I won a seat in Congress, and I was fully supportive of abortion rights. And this is back in 2005-2006. That was considered risky by a lot of people in our party.

I think what the former secretary is getting at is that we maybe didnt understand the threat that was coming, that we thought that Roe was going to protect us, he said. I think there were a lot of us, myself included, didnt believe that.

But although Walz agreed Clinton is not wrong, he contended Democrats have not been flat-footed since Dobbs v. Jackson Womens Health Organization, with abortion credited for the partys strong performance in elections since 2022, despite poor polling data regarding the economy.

I think thats why states like Minnesota were firewalling things up, the governor said. Were an island of decency out here. Its Handmaids Tale out here of the states surrounding me, from the Dakotas to Iowa, forcing women into these terrible situations.

So, no, I dont totally disagree with her, he added. I think the difference is now, since the fall of Roe orchestrated by Donald Trump and his Supreme Court, that we are ready. And women are ready, men are ready. And those who think that this is just a distracting issue, this is a fundamental issue of personal freedoms and personal bodily autonomy.

In an interview with New York Times reporters Elizabeth Dias and Lisa Lerer previewing their new book, The Fall of Roe: The Rise of a New America, Clinton asserted our side was complacent and took Roe for granted and thinking it would never go away.

We didnt take it seriously, and we didnt understand the threat, Clinton said. Most Democrats, most Americans, did not realize we are in an existential struggle for the future of this country.

[The right is] relentless. You know, they take a loss, they get back up, they regroup, they raise more money, she continued. Its tremendously impressive the way that they operate. And we have nothing like it on our side.

Former President Donald Trump last week underscored that he would never advocateimposing restrictions on birth control after last month encouraging states to protect abortion access in the cases of rape, incest, and life of the mother, in addition to reiterating his support of in vitro fertilization.

My view is now that we haveabortionwhere everybody wanted it from a legal standpoint, the states will determine by vote or legislation or perhaps both, Trump said in April. Whatever they decide must be the law of the land in this case, the law of the state.

Hillary Clinton criticized her fellow Democrats over what she described as a decades-in-the-making failure to protect abortion rights, saying in her first extended interview about the fall of Roe v. Wade that her party underestimated the growing strength of anti-abortion forces until many Democrats were improbably taken by surprise by the landmark Dobbs decision in 2022.

In wide-ranging and unusually frank comments, Mrs. Clinton said Democrats had spent decades in a state of denial that a right enshrined in American life for generations could fall that faith in the courts and legal precedent had made politicians, voters and officials unable to see clearly how the anti-abortion movement was chipping away at abortion rights, restricting access to the procedure and transforming the Supreme Court, until it was too late.

She said: We could have done more to fight.

Mrs. Clintons comments came in an interview conducted in late February for a forthcoming book, The Fall of Roe: The Rise of a New America.

The interview represented Mrs. Clintons most detailed comments on abortion rights since the Supreme Court decision that led to the procedure becoming criminalized or restricted in 21 states. She said not only that her party was complacent but also that if she had been in the Senate at the time she would have worked harder to block confirmation of Trump-appointed justices.

And in a blunt reflection about the role sexism played in her 2016 presidential campaign, she said women were the voters who abandoned her in the final days because she was not perfect. Overhanging the interview was the understanding that had she won the White House, Roe most likely would have remained a bedrock feature of American life. She assigned blame for the fall of Roe broadly but pointedly, and notably spared herself from the critique.

Bette Midler raised eyebrows on Sunday when she asked people to imagine what would have happened if Hillary Clinton had claimed the 2016 election was stolen.

The remark, seemingly out of the blue from the legendary singer and actress whose career in Hollywood and on Broadway has spanned more than five decades, immediately attracted criticism as well as a fact-check.

Critics pointed out that Clinton is on the record questioning the results of the election she lost to former President Donald Trump.

There was a widespread understanding that this election [in 2016] was not on the level, Clintonsaid in October 2020 during an interview onThe Atlanticspolitics podcast,The Ticket. We still dont know what really happened.

Theres just a lot that I think will be revealed. History will discover, Clinton continued. But you dont win by 3 million votes and have all this other shenanigans and stuff going on and not come away with an idea like, Whoa, somethings not right here. That was a deep sense of unease.

Just two months earlier, in August 2020, Clinton said Joe Biden, then the Democratic presidential nominee, should not concede the upcoming 2020 election under any circumstances because she believed this is going to drag out, and eventually I do believe he will win if we dont give an inch, and if we are as focused and relentless as the other side is.

During the same interview, the former secretary of state also called Trump a puppet of [Russian President Vladimir] Putin and said he did not have the temperament to be president.

Social media users were quick to point out Clintons comments to Midler.

She did for like years, one X userwrote.

She is still saying 2016 was stolen. Who you kidding? posted another.

One userremindedMidler that the actress herself hadquestionedthe results of 2016.

In recent months, however, Trump and Republicans have encouraged voters to take advantage of mail-in voting when necessary.

Last month, Trumptold supporters that ABSENTEE VOTING, EARLY VOTING, AND ELECTION DAY VOTING ARE ALL GOOD OPTIONS.

Former President Donald Trump relished a very interesting day after his defense team roughed up Michael Cohen, the star witness in the hush money case against the presumptive GOP nominee.

A gag order bars Mr. Trump from talking about witnesses in the case. But he seemed pleased with how the cross-examination of Mr. Cohen, his lawyer-turned-accuser, unfolded on Thursday. He also repeated his belief the case is politically motivated.

That was my crime I won an election I wasnt supposed to win against Hillary Clinton, Mr. Trump said, evoking the cases focus on actions near the 2016 election.

He said when he announced his 2024 campaign, it was a hot iron again.

Prosecutors allege Mr. Trump, using Mr. Cohen, paid $130,000 in hush money to porn star Stormy Daniels in 2016 and then concealed reimbursements to Mr. Cohen in an unlawful manner.

Mr. Trump pleaded not guilty to 34 counts of falsifying business records.

His attorney, Todd Blanche, cast doubt on the veracity of Mr. Cohens version of events by pointing to an oddity in his testimony about a key phone call with Mr. Trump.

Records suggested the brunt of the call from Mr. Cohen to Mr. Trumps bodyguard, Keith Schiller, focused on a young prankster who called his phone, though Mr. Cohen insists the call included Mr. Trumps approval of the Daniels payment.

I think it was a very interesting day, a fascinating day and it shows what a scam this whole thing is, Mr. Trump said.

Mr. Trump said the trial and other cases are being rushed to ruin his campaign against President Biden.

You know, theyre trying to rush to get it done before the election so that they can harm me, so they can hurt their political opponent, Mr. Trump said.

Other cases against him may not go to trial before November, though the New York trial could reach a verdict before the month is over, or at least by mid-June.
