Rep. Elijah Cummings said that Clinton agreed to testify before the committee investigating the 2012 terrorist attack in December after he contacted her months earlier.

"The chairman asked me back in September to inquire as to whether Secretary Clinton would testify," Cummings said. "She immediately said she would and that she wanted to come in December, but if December did not work, she would come in January. She said I'll do it, period. The fact is she was very clear. She did not hesitate for one second."

The U.S. consulate in Libya was attacked on Sept. 11, 2012. Four Americans, including the U.S. Ambassador to Libya Chris Stevens, were killed. Initially, the attack was thought to be perpetrated by an angry mob responding to a video made in the U.S. which mocked Islam and the Prophet Mohammed, but was later determined to be a terrorist attack.

Nick Merrill, the former first lady's spokesman, declined to go into detail about why Clinton agreed to testify and when she might do so.

"I'm going to leave it to the committee to address their plans," said Merrill.

In the past, Cummings has publicly resisted calling Clinton to testify before the committee. The Maryland congressman said in December that he agrees with other Democrats who say they don't see why she should be called.

Cummings' comments on Tuesday, however, revealed the clearest indication to date that Clinton was willing to show up before the committee, though many details remain to be agreed upon and the appearance could well never happen.

While touring the country selling her new memoir in June 2014, Clinton was asked whether she would be willing to testify before the House committee.

"We'll see," she told NBC in an interview. "I'm not going to prejudge it."

Mitt Romney Calls Hillary Clinton 'Clueless'

Mitt Romney spoke about poverty in a speech in the nations poorest state this evening -- while directly taking aim at Hillary Clinton, saying she cluelessly pressed a reset button for Russia.

Romney addressed students at Mississippi State University, and in excerpts provided to ABC News today before the speech by an aide, Romney outlined an early line of attack he may employ if he again runs for president.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton cluelessly pressed a reset button for Russia, which smiled and then invaded Ukraine, a sovereign nation, Romney said. The Middle East and much of North Africa is in chaos. China grows more assertive and builds a navy that will be larger than ours in five years. We shrink our nuclear capabilities as Russia upgrades theirs.

According to reporters who attended the speech, Romney joked about his wealth while also getting in a jab at Clinton, saying, "I'm not even thinking about the speaking fees I can earn...As you no doubt heard, I'm already rich."

He also acknowledged he is considering a third presidential run, saying, You may have heard that Im thinking of running for president again.

Romney described three issues the nation needs to improve, likely topics he would build his campaign on, including the need to help make the world a safer place, the need to restore opportunity, particularly for the middle class" and the need to lift people out of poverty.

In what looks like an early attack against Clinton, trying to align her with President Obama, Romney asked, How can Secretary Clinton provide opportunity for all if she doesn't know where jobs come from in the first place?

Romney then jabbed the president, asking how he expects to make America the best place on earth for businesses, as he promised in his State of the Union address if there are high business taxes, regulations that favor the biggest banks and crush the small ones, as well as a complex and burdensome health care plan, an attack he tried to employ in his last campaign unsuccessfully.

The presidents health care plan was repeatedly compared to Romneys health care plan in Massachusetts, something he denied, but an issue that will likely come up again by GOP opponents in a future campaign.

Romney added the country needs a president who will do what it takes to bring more good paying jobs to the placement offices of our college campuses.

Congressman: Hillary Clinton willing to testify before Benghazi panel

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has said she's willing to testify before a House Select Committee investigating the September 2012 terrorist attack in Benghazi, Libya, a key Democratic congressman confirms to CBS News.

Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Maryland, told reporters on Tuesday that he's spoken with Clinton about testifying before the panel, and she "did not hesitate for one second."

"She said...I'll do it, period," said Cummings, the committee's top Democrat, according to The Hill newspaper. "The fact is that she was very clear."

Cummings spoke with Clinton about testifying at the behest of the panel's chairman, Rep. Trey Gowdy, R-South Carolina, after the panel's first hearing last September. Clinton, a Democratic aide tells CBS News, "responded that she was willing and able to testify in a public hearing--as early as December 2014--to answer any remaining questions." Gowdy ultimately opted to delay Clinton's testimony, saying he wanted to obtain additional documents first.

The attack on an American facility in Benghazi claimed four lives, including then-U.S. Ambassador to Libya Chris Stevens. Clinton, then the U.S. secretary of state, has been criticized by Republicans for neglecting to secure America's diplomatic facilities in Libya, which has been riven by warfare since the 2011 ouster of longtime dictator Muammar Qaddafi.

Gowdy has said he wants Clinton to appear before his panel to answer questions about the incident, which touched off a political firestorm right before the 2012 election and continues to churn the news cycle as Clinton prepares for a likely 2016 presidential bid. Earlier this month, he indicated he's willing to subpoena her to force her to testify.

In a global "town hall" with young people today, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said her biggest regret during her four years in the post was...

If Clinton appears before the select committee, it will mark the third time she's faced a congressional interrogation over the Benghazi attacks. In 2013 testimony before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Clinton said she felt "responsible" for the loss of life, and she pledged to take steps to improve the security of American diplomats abroad. But she also demonstrated she wouldn't allow GOP attacks over the issue to go unanswered.

When Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wisconsin, criticized the administration for initially suggesting the attacks were the result of a protest turned violent - rather than a premeditated terrorist attack - Clinton heatedly fired back.

As he eyes a 2016 presidential bid, Mitt Romney will use an address at Mississippi State University on Wednesday night to throw some elbows at likely Democratic candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton, according to excerpts of his planned remarks obtained by CBS News.

While her bid appears all but certain, Clinton, a former U.S. senator and secretary of state, has not yet said she's running. As she waits, though, she's already been targeted by a number of potential Republican candidates eager to showcase their fighting spirit.

In his prepared remarks, Romney links Clinton to President Obama's foreign policy, criticizing her effort to "reset" U.S.-Russia relations during Mr. Obama's first term.

"Secretary of State Hillary Clinton cluelessly pressed a reset button for Russia, which smiled and then invaded Ukraine, a sovereign nation," Romney is expected to say. "The Middle East and much of North Africa is in chaos. China grows more assertive and builds a navy that will be larger than ours in five years. We shrink our nuclear capabilities as Russia upgrades theirs."

Romney's remarks also showcase a new message focused on income inequality and middle class economics - two themes Democrats were able to successfully turn against Romney when he was the Republican presidential nominee in 2012.

In his speech text, Romney takes a swipe at Hillary Clinton for telling voters during the 2014 midterm campaign, "Don't let anybody tell you it's corporations and businesses that create jobs."

"How can Secretary Clinton provide opportunity for all if she doesn't know where jobs come from in the first place?" Romney is expected to ask. "We need a president who will do what it takes to bring more good paying jobs to the placement offices of our college campuses."

Mitt Romney to hit Hillary Clinton on jobs

Former GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney on Wednesday will lodge some of his sharpest attacks yet against likely Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton.

His comments, which come as speculation over a third Romney White House bid grows, suggest a strong push to orient his next campaign around economic issues facing the poor and totie Clinton to the Obama administrations economic policies.

Short term, our economy is looking up. But it is a lot better for the few, and pretty darn discouraging for the many, Romney will say in a speech at Mississippi State University Wednesday, according to a copy of his prepared remarks. How can Secretary Clinton provide opportunity for all if she doesn't know where jobs come from in the first place?"

Romneys comments appear to reference a Clinton stump speech from October, in which the former secretary of state dismissed trickle-down economic theory.

"Don't let anybody tell you that, you know, it's corporations and businesses that create jobs. You know that old theory, trickle-down economics. That has been tried. That has failed," Clinton said in a speech in October.

Critics seized upon her comments to paint her as anti-business and her team later said that she had intended to make a comment about tax cuts for corporations. Critics pointed to the botched line as evidence that Clinton would run into trouble appealingto the growingpopulists voices in her party.

Romney plans to say that we need to lift people out of poverty, pointing to both individuals he met on the campaign trail in 2012 who were optimistic about finding their way back into the middle class and folks who had been in poverty from generation to generation.

It's finally time to apply conservative policies that improve America's education system, promote family formation and create good-paying jobs," he will say.

This isn't the first time Romney has gone afterClinton onmiddle class issues.Earlier Wednesday, Romney's team criticized Clintons lifestyle of the rich and famous" in an effort to downplay the extent to which his own wealth may factor into another White House run.

It's going to be hard for Hillary Clinton to make Mitt Romney's wealth a fruitful line of attack, with her multi-million dollar mansions in Georgetown and Chappaqua and her jet-setting lifestyle of the rich and famous," a Romney aide told the Boston Globe.
