Ah, the joy of becoming a grandma.
Hillary Rodham Clinton canceled plans to attend a fundraiser in Potomac, Maryland on Tuesday evening for Maryland's Democratic nominee for governor so that she could spend more time with her new granddaughter, Charlotte (and Charlotte's mom, Chelsea).
But the former secretary of state sent a well-known stand-in to stump for Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown: her husband (and the proud grandfather), Bill Clinton.
"I am very grateful to President Clinton for changing his schedule to travel to Maryland and attend our event this evening," Brown said in a statement Tuesday morning. "I appreciate and respect Secretary Clinton's decision to stay and spend time with her daughter and new granddaughter, Charlotte. I appreciate both of the Clintons' commitment to the . . . campaign."
Chelsea Clinton gave birth Friday night to the Clintons' first grandchild. In a statement on Saturday, Bill and Hillary Clinton said they are "blessed, grateful, and so happy" to become grandparents. Hillary Clinton has canceled several events this week to spend time with her daughter and granddaughter.
The Brown fundraiser was to be held at a private home in Potomac, according to the invitation. Standing-room tickets started at $250, seated tickets were $1,000 and VIP seating was priced at $4,000.
Brown campaign manager Justin Schall said at least 400 people were expected - and he doubted that any of them would be disappointed to see Bill Clinton instead of Hillary, especially if the former president talked about his celebrity granddaughter.
